Scope of Award:
The John N. Brady Memorial Scholarship Award is a monetary award presented annually in the amount of $1,000 to further the education of a graduating senior that plays baseball and plays/played in the Montgomery County Baseball Association (MCBA). Established in 2009, the scholarship award recipient will be notified in September of each year.
Background:
The MCBA was established in 1954 to provide community youth with opportunities to learn the skills of baseball and experience the enjoyment and satisfaction gained from participating in a competitive team sport in an organized league under competent leadership. With a view towards educating and training the players to become better citizens, the personal safety, welfare and attitudes of fair play and sportsmanship are emphasized and reinforced in the MCBA.
John Brady served on the MCBA Board of Directors for ten years and was President of the Association from 2006 - 2008. John also served on the Board of Directors of Gaithersburg Sports Association (GSA), was a coach for many of GSA's baseball teams and was the GSA web master. John was also very devoted to the baseball program at Gaithersburg High School where his two sons, Matt and Kevin, played baseball over an eight year period. He was a founder, general manager and first head coach of the Gaithersburg Giants, a collegiate team playing in the Eddie Brookes Wooden Bat League.
John exemplified the meaning of competent leadership, fair play, good sportsmanship and dedication to youth baseball. He freely gave of his time, talent and wisdom. John died far too soon on April 27, 2009. To honor John, the MCBA in conjunction with is wife, Laraine, and Matt and Kevin have established the scholarship in his name. We are confident that the John N. Brady Memorial Scholarship will flourish over time and that each award recipient will live up to the high standards that John Brady represented.
