Police Officer Brent Long was shot and killed as he and other officers served a felony warrant at a house at approximately 3:30 pm.

A task force comprised of officers from the United States Marshals Service, Indiana State Police, and Terre Haute Police Department, including Officer Long, knocked on the back door of a house on North 8th Street to serve a felony warrant. Several people exited the house, but not the wanted suspect. As the officers made entry into the home, the suspect opened fire as they proceeded down a hallway, striking Officer Long and his canine, Shadow. The suspect was shot and killed by return fire.

Officer Long was transported to Union Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. Shadow was taken to a veterinary clinic and is expected to recover.

Officer Long had served with the Terre Haute Police Department for six years. He is survived by his wife, 11-year-old daughter, and 10-month-old son.

Officer David Moore succumbed to gunshot wounds suffered three days earlier after stopping a stolen vehicle at approximately 9:00 am in the 3400 block of North Temple Avenue.

As the driver and Officer Moore, whose weapon was holstered, were outside their vehicles, he was shot four times by the man who fled the scene. Officer Moore, who was wearing a bullet-resistant vest, was shot in the chest, the left thigh and twice in his face. He was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital where he remained in a coma until being taken off life support and his organs were donated.

A 60-year-old parolee was apprehended later that evening and held for a robbery committed 45 minutes after the shooting. He has been charged with murder, armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Officer Moore had served with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department for 6½ years and was assigned to the North District. He is survived by his parents. His mother currently serves as a sergeant and his father retired as a lieutenant with the department.

Officer William Phillips was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver while on bike patrol training at approximately 12:45 am in Henry County.

Officer Phillips and two other members of the bike patrol team had just finished their shift and were conducting a training ride on department-issued bicycles. While they were riding westbound on U.S. 40 near the Knightstown High School, he was struck from behind by a vehicle which then fled the scene. All of the officers were wearing helmets and had lights on their bicycles.

The 59-year-old female driver of the vehicle that struck Officer Phillips later surrendered and was charged with failure to stop after a fatal accident.

Officer Phillips had served with the Greenfield Police Department for nearly 4½ years and had previously served with the McCordsville Police Department. He was a US Marine Corps veteran. Officer Phillips is survived by his wife, 2- and 5-year-old sons, two sisters and parents.

Corporal James Szuba and his canine partner, Ricky, were killed when their squad car was struck while assisting with a pursuit.

At about 9:20 pm, Corporal Szuba was proceeding northbound on Byrkit Avenue as it turns into Fir Road when his squad car was sideswiped by a drunken driver being pursued by another officer. The suspect had swerved around a vehicle parked at the stoplight at McKinley Highway when he hit the oncoming squad car of Corporal Szuba and Ricky, who were both killed instantly.

The 31-year-old suspect, who had a blood-alcohol content nearly three times the legal limit, was on probation for an 18-month sentence for delivery and manufacturing of marijuana. He was later convicted and sentenced to 32½ years for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing death, resisting law enforcement and possession of controlled substances.

Corporal Szuba had served with the Mishawaka Police Department for over 7½ years. He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, mother, two brothers and two sisters. One brother currently serves as a sergeant and their father was a retired officer with the South Bend Police Department.

Deputy Sheriff Roy Sutton was killed in a single-car automobile accident on Dugan Hollow Road near Madison.

While responding to a domestic disturbance call involving weapons at about 10:35 pm, Deputy Sutton met an oncoming vehicle traveling westbound on a hilly, winding section of the road when his squad car ran off the right side of the road and down a very steep embankment. Deputy Sutton's squad became airborne and struck a tree on the driver's side of the car. He was wearing his seat belt, but he suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputy Sutton had served with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department for approximately 1½ years. He was survived by his wife, brother, three sisters and mother.
