Brockton Youth Cheerleaders began in October 2001 at the Davis Community School. LaRonda Campbell established the program. LaRonda grew up in Charleston, SC and as a young girl, cheerleading was a pastime favorite since the age of 5 right through high school in Brockton and college in Lancaster, MA. Ms. Campbell, having two small daughters (and a son who does not cheer :) at the time felt a need to instill the value of dance and creative exercising to her daughters and nieces. Upon such great interest of the girls and their friends, Ms. Campbell decided to offer a cheerleading program in which girls in the community can be introduced and exposed to the sport of cheerleading.
Upon the first day of class the program enrolled approximately 10 girls. Somehow word had gotten out that a new cheerleading program was beginning in the city, Phenomenal Cheer Association (PCA). At the next class, 35 girls were added to the program thus surprisingly leading to a higher enrollment each night. During the first year of the program, PCA enrolled 132 girls from the Brockton community – what a great response.
PCA (Phenomenal Cheerleading Assoication) soon became BYC (Brockton Youth Cheerleading) which created a great avenue and introduction to cheerleading for the city of Brockton. Seeing the strong influence that this sport had made on these young girls, BYC offered summer classes/camps and various shows and involvement such as cheering for the YMCA basketball league, involvement with the local holiday parades, visiting nursing homes in the community and even supporting churches in festivities. Any spotlight or appearances BYC could establish for the girls…they were sure to be there.
Throughout the years many changes and growth confronted BYC. This was no longer a personal endeavor to see the program evolve; it became a strong community involvement as well as unifying the community. So many girls throughout the city were now linked to this program. Together they became winners, a team, victors and more importantly FRIENDS.
Each year Brockton Youth Cheerleaders brings together little girls throughout the city. Together they become one team. Look for them in the Brockton Holiday Parade where you will see them strolling down the streets of Brockton, in their authentic BYC uniform (Red, White and Black) shaking their pom-poms and representing in a town in which they all can cheer together: “Who rocks the house, Brockton rocks the house…..and when we rock the house, we rock it all the way down!” Their little faces are all aglow and excited because they are a part of a team in which they exhibit their skills and self-worth. Look for them at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field in Boston, where our All-Star teams compete and prove that they are from the City of Champions. In the springtime, catch a glimpse of them in the Stunt and Tumble sessions at the Baker School. - practicing and learning new skills and tumbling routines, just so they can perform them perfectly before their family and friends. Or even at Mount Ida College where you can find our All Star team - Five Star Athletics vigorously learning new skills to bring back to their teams.
It’s the efforts and passion of these young girls that makes BYC what it is today.
Today BYC conducts classes at the Baker School on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the months of September – March for girl’s ages 3-18. Each spring a Stunt and Tumble session is held. A new all star team is created. Former cheerleaders are now giving back their time and talents to smaller cheerleaders as new assistant coaches. Our staff is stronger and growing. BYC is on the rise and making gains to reach as much young girls as we can. For any girl that has ever dreamed of becoming a cheerleader we are the driving force behind that dream. We will continue to instill the value of self-worth, pride, confidence, teamwork, commitment, creative exercise and positive self-esteem through the aspirations and ways of cheerleading to each girl who desires.
BYC – Cheerleading… Believe You Can!
