Frequently Asked Questions for RBI’s Legion, Junior Legion and Senior Babe Ruth Programs

Can Non-Residents play Legion or Jr. Legion?

No, according to the bylaws of American Legion Baseball, participating players must reside in or go to school in the city for which they play.

Is the age cutoff the same for the three Metro-affiliated programs previously offered through RBI?

For purposes of qualifying, Metro Baseball considers a player’s age as of April 30th of the program year.  The Legion and Babe Ruth organizations consider a players age as of December 31st prior to the program year.  For example, a player born on December 30th, 1998 would be considered a 17 year old for purposes of the 2016 Baseball season.  A player born on January 4th, 1998 would be considered a 16 year old for purposes of team eligibility during the 2016 season.

Why do u14 and u15 players participating on the Legion and Jr. Legion teams need to play u14 or u15 travel?

We do not believe that there will be significant conflict between the Legion and tournament schedules at this age, so we are committed to requiring dual placement for Legion and Junior Legion players at this level.   Requiring dual participation for these players will help ensure that that traveling teams will have enough players participating at this age level, creating greater opportunities for Richfield baseball players across the board.  We feel that this approach supports our long standing tradition of supporting ball players of all ages by providing as many opportunities to play as is practical, and is similar to the requirements in all of our u15 programs that have associated House programs.

What does it mean to be double (or dual) rostered?

Double rostering is the process of registering a player to be eligible on two separate teams for which he or she is qualified.  This process is utilized at times in order to give players more opportunity to play or pitch, to fill out teams when there otherwise may not be enough players for separate rosters and to make sure that there is enough pitching for both teams without endangering player safety.

If my player is double rostered, does that mean that I need to pay registration fees for both teams?

This decision is still undetermined.  Appropriate information will be made available before the start of evaluations for u14/u15 players so that families can make informed decisions.  With this being the first year that RBI is overseeing these programs, there are some details still to be worked out.

How will the teams be chosen for Junior Legion/Legion?

Players will be evaluated in May, with the exact date to be communicated when it has been finalized. Following the evaluation date, the Jr. Legion and Legion coaches and the Legion Director will create the teams, as well as decide which players to consider for double rostering.  Many factors will be used in determining the final rosters including, but not limited to: performance during the High School season, evaluations and the prior seasons, attitude, as well as position needs for each team.

My player is a Junior in high school, but was born on or after 1/1/99.  Are they eligible to be placed on the Junior Legion team by the evaluation committee?

Yes, they are. Player eligibility for each level is determined by players under a certain age, so players are eligible to play above the level for which their age qualifies them.  In these circumstances, the player must still demonstrate requisite skill to play at the advanced level, and there must be a place available on the team or teams under consideration.  League coaches and Directors will make the final determination in these instances.

Can I request my player only tryout for a certain level?

No, players will be assigned to teams for the Junior Legion/Legion/Senior Babe levels as long as they meet the age requirements.

Who will coach each team?

Legion and Junior Legion teams will have a paid coach or coaches chosen by the RBI Board and League Director.  These coaches must pass background checks and concussion training, just like all RBI coaches.   The Senior Babe Ruth team will not have a paid coach.  Like most of the other levels of baseball that RBI oversees, we will be seeking a qualified parent or member of the community to volunteer to lead this team. Again, as is the case with all RBI coaches, this individual will also have to pass both a background check and concussion training.

Is there any commitments outside of baseball practice and games for the Junior Legion/Legion Players?

Yes, they will be required to help out with at least 5 fundraising events. In past years, these events have included: RBCU 4th of July Float, RBCU member’s Picnic, Day Time Summer Legion Clinics, our tournaments and Northern League Clinics in July.  This season’s events have yet to be planned, but will be communicated in advance for participating players.  Players will be responsible for participation, including finding a suitable replacement should they not be able to meet a given commitment.

How many games and tournaments can I expect?

For Legion Baseball we are looking to get around 25-35 total baseball game including tournaments and sectional playoffs. For Junior Legion, we are looking at 20-30 games including tournaments.

Do the teams have any out of town tournaments?

The American Legion program has typically included a tournament in northern Minnesota, but it is unknown at this time if that will continue this year. Junior Legion teams have not participated in out of town tournaments recently.  The tournament schedule for both leagues is yet to be set.  Appropriate communication will be made as soon as this schedule is available.

Does this league offer similar playing time for all players?

Unlike other RBI sponsored leagues, the Legion, Junior Legion and Senior Babe Ruth leagues will have varying degrees of playing time. RBI will not be setting playing time requirements for coaches to follow at these levels, but it is expected that all players will get a chance to contribute and that these teams will support RBI’s Mission of training players in the fundamentals of baseball, sportsmanship, and leadership.  Senior Babe Ruth and Junior Legion teams will likely see more equitable playing time than our Legion team.  Coaches should be honest with a player about their role on the team, as well as what they can do to improve as baseball players. Double rostering will also allow an opportunity for some players to find more regular playing time.
