AQ vs. Batavia - Sectional Pre-Quarter Final Game

In a game that featured terrific pitching from both teams, Aquinas lost a pre quarter final sectional game to Batavia 4-0. The game was scoreless until the 4th inning when Batavia scratched out 2 runs. In the top of the inning, AQ had its best chance to get on the scoreboard but left the bases loaded to end the inning. Batavia added 2 more insurance runs in the bottom of the 5th inning to close out the scoring. James Maddison pitched the first 4 innings and was relieved by Bryan Speranza in the 5th inning. In total, both pitchers gave up a total of 4 hits. The loss ends Aquinas' 2015 season at 10-10.

AQ vs. Albion

May 15, 2015

On Senior Day, a game dedicated to the 5 AQ seniors who may have played their last home game, AQ dug out of a 9 run deficit and beat Albion 17-12. Albion opened up the scoring in the 1st with 4 runs helped out by a couple of Aquinas miscues. Aquinas responded in their half of the inning with 2 runs of their own with consecutive singles by Nick Giannavola and Trey Brown followed by a 2 run double by Tyler Freedman. Albion then scored 7 runs in the top of the 2nd to grab what seemed to be an insurmountable 11-2 lead. However, after a shutdown inning by James Maddison in the top of the 3rd, AQ responded with 1 run in the bottom of the 3rd, 5 runs in the 4th, and 6 runs in the 5 to storm ahead 14-11. AQ then added 3 more insurance runs in the 6th to put the game away.

AQ vs Wayne

Bryan Speranza pitched a complete game with 10 strikeouts to lead Aquinas past Wayne 6-2.  Aquinas has won 4 out of its last 5 games and improved to 9-9 on the season.

Aquinas got on the board in the first inning with 4 runs as they batted around.  Three walks and two errors by Wayne were surrounded by a Trey Brown double and a Zach Mariani single.  Aquinas led 4-0 afer 1.  Wayne was able to push a couple runs across but the score remained 4-2 until the top of the 7th when Tyler Freedman and Zach Mariani both singled and were brought home by a James Maddison double to increase the lead to 6-2.

Aquinas is back home for Senior Night on Friday vs. Albion which is also the final regular season game of 2015 season.

AQ vs. Eastridge

Aquinas started the last week of their regular season with a 6-5 victory over Eastridge. AQ got things going early as Max Swartz and Nick Giannavola both singled to start the game. With one out and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Tyler Freedman hit a towering home run over the right center field fence to give the Irish and early 3-0 lead. AQ added another run in the 3rd when Giannavola led off with a single, stole 2nd, and was driven in by a single by Trey Brown. Eastridge fought back scoring 3 runs in the top of the 4th to make it a one run game. In the 5th with AQ still nursing a a one run lead, Eastridge was threatening to tie the score but a terrific leaping catch by catcher Nick Giannavola on an attempted bunt led to a double play and took the Lancers out of what could have been a big inning. In the 6th inning Eastridge tied the score at 4. However, AQ responded in the bottom of the inning as Mikey Hernandez led off with a walk. Max Swartz walked and Nick Giannavola was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Trey Brown then delivered a two run double to left that glanced off the left fielder's glove to make the score 6-4. Eastridge added a run in the top of the inning but pitcher Max Swartz was able to strike out the last Eastridge batter to close out the game.

Swartz pitched a very strong complete game on short rest for the victory. The win brings AQ's record to 8-9 on the season.

Pilliter Memorial Tournament vs. Greece Athena - Championship game

In the Championship game of the Pilliter Memorial Tournment Aquinas lost to Greece Athena 19-8.

Aquinas jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning with singles by Max Swartz, Nick Giannavola, Trey Brown, Bryan Speranza, Zach Mariani, and a double by Tyler Freedman.  By the end of the 3rd Greece Athena had cut the lead to 5-3.  In the 4th, Aquinas scored 3 times with the help of a single by Nick Giannavola and doubles by Trey Brown and Tyler Freedman.  Greece Athena scored 9 runs in the 5th and pulled away for the win.

Pilliter Memorial Tournament vs. Canisius Game 1

In the game 1 of the Aquinas - Pilliter Memorial Tournament AQ faced Canisius out of Buffalo, NY and came away with a 10-9 win.

Canisius plated 3 runs in the first inning but Aquinas was able to answer with 3 in the bottom half which featured a double by Nick Giannavola and singles by Tyler Freedman and Bryan Speranza.

In the bottom of the 2nd Aquinas grabbed a 5-3 lead with a single by Max Swartz and a home run by Trey Brown.

Aquinas increased their lead in the 5th scoring 5 times as they batted around.  The 5th inning was highlighted by a 2 run home run by Matt Carroll.

Max Swartz pitched 4 1/3 innings with 5 strikeouts.  Bryan Speranza came in relief to get the win.  James Maddison got the final out of the game.

AQ vs. Hornell

Aquinas set the tone of the game early in a 12-2 win over Hornell. AQ's struggling offense leading into the game started things off with 5 straight hits highlighted by doubles by Max Swartz and Tyler Freedman to take an early 4-0 lead after 1 inning. Hornell responded with 2 runs in the 2nd inning to cut the lead to 4-2. AQ got one of those runs back after a lead off single by Matt Carroll, a single by Swartz, and a single by Nick Giannavola which plated Carroll making the score 5-2 after two innings. In the 4th inning the AQ offense broke open the game with an encore of the ist inning as again the first 5 hitters all had hits which added 4 more runs to AQ's tally. AQ added 1 more in the 5th and their final 2 runs in the 6th to make the score 12-2. Zach Mariani pitched a solid 6.1 innings, striking out 5 to earn the victory.

AQ vs. Victor

Aquinas assisted the Victor offense with numerous miscues in the field and lost 10-2. 

Aquinas scored two runs in the 2nd inning when Zach Mariani and Hiramil Hernadez reached on walks and scored on a double by Max Swartz.

AQ vs McQuaid

After erupting for 18 runs against RH on Saturday, the AQ offense fell silent in a 7-0 loss to McQuaid. Several AQ defensive miscues allowed McQuaid to score 1 run in the 1st, 2 runs in the 3rd, 2 in the 4th, and 2 more in the 5th. The bright spot for Aquinas was the pitching effort of Max Swartz who pitched 6 strong innings against one of the best offensive teams in the area. Unfortunately, that was not enough as AQ lost for the second time this season to their arch rival.

AQ vs. Rush Henrietta

Aquinas improved to 5-6 with a 18-3 win vs. Rush Henrietta on Saturday afternoon.  Aquinas got the offense back on track with 17 hits highlighted by Tyler Freedman's 3 run home run in the first inning. 

Aquinas scored 5 times in the first inning.  Max Swartz led off with a walk followed by Nick Giannavola reaching on a bunt, Trey doubled scoring Max, and then Tyler Freedman hit a 3 run HR.  Singles by Bryan Speranza and Zach Mariani added another run.  Aquinas added two more runs in the 2nd inning w singles by Nick Giannavola, Trey Brown, and Tyler.  In the fourth inning AQ scored 2 more runs and featured a double by Trey Brown.  AQ kept the offense rolling in the 5th with four more runs with singles by Bryan, Matt, and Hiramil.  In the 6th AQ added additional runs with several walks and singles by Johnny Mason, Nick, and Hiramil.

Bryan Speranza pitched 6 innings with 4 strikeouts and Hiramil Hernandez came into pitch the 7th inning.

AQ vs. Bishop Kearney

The story of the game was Bishop Kearney's pitcher Matt Deroller as he kept the AQ bats silent allowing only one hit by Bryan Speranza. BK scored 1 run in the 1st and another 3 runs in the 4th. Joe DeFrancesco started on the mound for AQ and was relieved by Zach Mariani in the 4th with Max Swartz pitching the 7th. BK wins 4-0.

AQ vs. Gananda

April 28, 2015

 On a perfect day for baseball, AQ bounced back from a tough loss to McQuaid with a 14-9 victory over Gananda. Gananda started the scoring in the top of the 1st with 1 run but AQ responded with 6 of their own in the bottom of the inning which featured doubles by Nick Giannavola and Max Swartz as well as a two run single by Johnny Mason. AQ didn't let up and scored 2 more in the 2nd starting with a lead off triple by Trey Brown. That was followed by an RBI groundout by James Maddison, a double by Bryan Speranza and a single by Zach Mariani scoring Speranza. AQ added some insurance runs in the 3rd and 4th highlighted by a two run double by Speranza and another double by Giannavola. AQ led 14-2 heading into the top of the 7th before giving up 7 runs to a feisty Gananda squad. AQ was able to close the door on Gananda's rally to post their 4th victory of the season.

AQ vs. McQuaid

Aquinas struggled in all parts of the game as a very talented, senior laden McQuaid team jumped out to a 15-0 lead and never looked back. The only offense from AQ came in the 3rd inning when Bryan Speranza hit a bases loaded, bases clearing double scoring the first 3 runs for AQ. That was followed by a single by Zach Mariani which plated Speranza. McQuaid's offense kept on rolling scoring 9 more times in a one sided, 24-4 victory.

AQ vs. Gates

April 21, 2015

The bats and the weather were both cold as Aquinas lost to Gates 6-4. Gates opened the scoring in the 2nd with one run and added three more in the 3rd. Aquinas battled back with two runs in the 5th when Johnny Mason led off the inning with a walk followed by a wind blown single by Max Swartz. After a fielder's choice left runners at 1st and 3rd, Trey Brown was hit by a pitch to load the bases. With two outs, Bryan Speranza put AQ on the scoreboard with a single which plated both Nick Giannavola and Brown. Gates responded with two runs of their own to make the score 6-2 after 5 innings. AQ tried to rally in the top of 7th with three straight singles by Giannavola, Brown , and James Maddison with the Maddison single scoring Giannavola. An RBI groundout by Zach Mariani cut the Gates lead down to 2 but thats as close as AQ could get.

AQ vs Batavia

April 18, 2015

Aquinas traveled to Dwyer Stadium in Batavia on Saturday afternoon and got the win 13-8. Aquinas improved to 3-3 with the win.

Batavia scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd.  Aquinas tied the game with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd inning.  Nick Grella walked and then John Mason reached on an error.  Nick came around to score when Max Swartz bunted and reached on a throwing error at first.  Nick Giannavola laid down a sac bunt advancing Max and John.  John then scored on a Trey Brown ground out.

Batavia scores 2 in the bottom of 3rd to take the lead 4-2.

In the 4th Aquinas scored five times as they loaded the bases when Matt Carroll and John Mason were both hit by pitches and then Max Swartz walked.  The runs came in on three consective two out singles by Nick Giannavola, Trey Brown, and Tyler Freedman.  Batavia answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning, Aquinas led 7-6.

Aquinas put up 5 more runs in the 5th inning to open the game up.  Brian Speranza singled and Matt Carroll reached on a bunt and a throwing error scored Brian.  Nick Grella singled to score Matt.  John Mason then put down a sac bunt.  Max Swartz, Nick Giannavola, and Trey Brown all walked pushing home another run.  Tyler Freedman's single plated two more runs. Aquinas led 12-6.

Aquinas scored once more in the 6th when Brian Speranza walked and then advanced on an error to 3rd.  He then scored on a Nick Grella sac fly. Aquinas led 13-6.

Batavia scored 2 in the bottom of the 6th to make it 13-8.

Bryan Speranza started on the mound and was followed by Zach Mariani.  James Maddison came out of the bullpen to pitched the final 3 and 1/3 innings shutting the Batavia offense down behind 5 strikeouts.

AQ vs Bishop Kearney

April 15, 2015

AQ got the bats going early in their first matchup of the season with Bishop Kearney. Max Swartz started things off with a lead off double and was followed by a single by Nick Giannavola which plated Swartz. Tyler Freedman singled and stole 2nd which was then followed by an RBI groundout by James Maddison. Matt Carroll then singled scoring Freedman. The 4th run of the inning was scored when Mike Hernandez reached base on an infield error. The bats stayed hot in the 2nd inning with Max Swartz starting things off again with a single. Nick Giannavola then walked. An infield error on a line out by Trey Brown plated Swartz. Tyler Freedman walked and stole 2nd. A Throwing error on a Maddison groundout plated two more. Kearney got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the 2nd to make the score 7-1. AQ broke open the game in the 4th with 4 more runs highlighted by singles by Matt Carroll, Nick Grella, Johnny Mason, and Max Swartz. Kearney scored 2 in the bottom of the inning followed by 3 more times in the 5th to make things interesting. AQ added an insurance run in the top of the 7th on a sacrifice fly by Trey Brown. Joe DeFrancesco came in to relieve Max Swartz in the bottom of the 5th and only allowed one run to Kearney in the 7th which closed out the scoring. Final score AQ wins 12-7.

AQ vs. St. Joe's

Aquinas lost to St. Joe's 6-4 on Sunday afternoon in Buffalo.  St. Joe's scored six times in the 3rd inning.  Aquinas bounced back in the 4th inning with four runs. Nick Grella led off the 4th with a walk followed by singles by Trey Brown and Tyler Freedman to load the bases.  Nick scored on a balk, Matt Carroll hit a rbi single to score Trey and then Max Swartz had a 2 rbi single to close out the scoring. 

James Maddison pitched 5 innings and Joe DeFrancesco pitched the sixth inning.

AQ vs Dwyer High School

April 1, 2015

Aquinas wrapped up their 2015 Florida trip with a game vs. Dwyer High School out of West Palm Gardens.  Dwyer’s team featured 5 players with college commitments to schools that include the University of Florida and Florida State.  However, Aquinas got the win 7-4 with a team effort that featured excellent pitching, strong defense, and timely offense.

Dwyer scored early in the game to take a 1-0 lead.  Aquinas answered with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd as DJ Berry scored on a Trey Brown single and Nick Giannavola scored the second run on a wild pitch.  It stayed  2-1 until the bottom of the 6th when Dwyer scored two off a 2 run home run to take a 3-2 lead.  Aquinas scored in the top of the 7th when DJ Berry reached on a fielder’s choice, Nick Giannavola singled, and then Trey Brown plated both of them on a single.  After a long battle Tyler Freeman earned a walk and then Zach Mariani reached base as Trey Brown scored on a play at the plate.  Bryan Speranza then singled to load the bases.  Max Swartz singled with the bases loaded to plate a couple more runs.  AQ scored 5 runs with 2 out and took a 7-3 lead.  Dwyer scored 1 run in the bottom of the 7th to close out the scoring.  AQ wins 7-4. 

A strong AQ pitching effort was led by starter James Madison through the first 5 innings and relief outings by Zach Mariani and Bryan Speranza.

AQ vs. Seminole Ridge

Aquinas traveled to Seminole Ridge High School in Loxahatchee, Florida and lost 8-4. 

Aquinas struggled to get the bats going and didn’t score until the 6th inning when they rallied to score 4 times.  DJ Berry led the inning off with a double and advanced on an error which allowed Nick Giannavola to reach base.  Trey Brown then singled and DJ scored.  Singles by Tyler Freedman and Bryan Speranza and walk by Zach Mariani with the bases loaded allowed Aquinas to score three more times.  Seminole Ridge then went to the bullpen to shut down the inning.

Final score Seminole Ridge 8 Aquinas 4.

AQ vs. Gilman

March 27, 2015

Aquinas began their 2015 season at the Gilman School in Baltimore. Gilman opened the scoring with 1 run in the bottom of the 1st. Aquinas got on the board in the 2nd on a Nick Grella base hit which scored Zach Mariani and Max Swartz. Gilman responded with 4 runs in their half of the 2nd. Aquinas scored two more in the 3rd on a Bryan Speranza double which scored Tyler Freedman and John Allpeter making the score 5-4 Gillman. Gilman added 2 more runs in the 4th. Aquinas gets 1 back in the top of the 5th when Bryan Speranza walked and advanced to third on wild pitches and scored on a ground out to short. However, Giliman opened the game up by scoring 8 runs in the bottom of the 5th. Final score Gilman 15 AQ 5.


Aquinas travels to Merritt Island, Florida for games on Saturday.
