Watchung Hills Wrestling Association Mission Statement

May 2, 2016

The goal of the Watchung Hills wrestling program is to provide an affordable opportunity to teach the fundamentals of collegiate wrestling as well as the principles of discipline, team unity, respect and sportsmanship to our wrestlers in grades K thru 12th while teaching valuable life lessons through the sport.

The Clubs History

The Watchung Hills Wrestling Association was founded in 2004.  Parents and coaches felt that there was a need for a youth recreation wrestling program in the area for Warren, Green Brook, Long Hill and Watchung.  In 2004, our first fully registered team consisted of more than thirty kids and ten coaches.  Most of these kids were new to the sport, some coming from football backgrounds others just wanting something productive to do in the off season.  The following years, the number of participants doubled and since have tripled.  To date, we have over 100 member, we have had some of the top competitive teams in numerous leagues, we have had numerous state champs from 2nd to 12th grade and we are the proud owner of our own year round training facility.

Participation and Work Ethic

In the Watchung Hills Wrestling room we encourage participation from all wrestlers as well as the support of all the parents.  We have several levels of wrestlers in the room:  Beginner, intermediate and advanced.  To go from the beginner team to the advanced team you must demonstrate and master all beginner moves and techniques as our program is structure in building block.  This is to assure that all wrestlers are learning the basics of wrestling before they can move to the next level.  Too many times we push kids through the sport without giving each competitor a good base of techniques and work ethic.  Wrestling is a sport that requires a tremendous amount of work and dedication to be successful.  Countless hours must be spent practicing and competing against good competition to get our wrestlers ready for the high school wrestling team.  The more a kid wrestles and drills techniques, the better he will be and the more fun he will have in the sport of wrestling.  The primary emphasis is not to win every match, but to develop skills that lead to increased performance at all levels of competition.

Mental Attitude

Your mental attitude plays a major role in your ability to be effective on and off the mat.  In our wrestling room we encourage wrestlers to have a positive attitude and focused work ethic no matter what the situation and along with showing respect and a commitment to their coaches and their teammates.   The outcome of every match is almost always linked to the attitude of the wrestler.  Sportsmanlike conduct on the part of everyone associated with the club is of the utmost importance.    It is how you win and lose that demonstrates attitude and character.
