James T. Byrnes III, passed away on Aug. 1, 2013, at the age of 62 as a result of complications following an esophageal cancer operation, in Ormond Beach, Fla. Jim was born in Elizabeth, N.J., on Dec. 12, 1950, to James and Kathleen Byrnes.

He graduated from Roselle Catholic High School in 1968 and then went on to graduate from Seton Hall University with a bachelor of science. Upon graduating from Seton Hall, Jim began working as a manager in the garment industry.

By 1980, Jim had moved to the mailing industry where he began his career as a sales representative and manager until he ultimately retired in November of 2012.

Jim was also the first grand knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 11409 in Warren, N.J.

Outside of work, Jim always volunteered his time in the community, particularly in youth/adult sports programs. From 1978 through the mid-1980s, Jim played for and managed the Union County Athletic Club, which won multiple league and division softball championships. Jim's younger brothers were all a part of that team. In the 1990s to early 2000s, Jim served as the president of the Watchung Hills Soccer Association (WHSA), where he organized and managed WHSA's outdoor/indoor soccer programs for children of all ages in the community. Upon retiring as president of WHSA, Jim received an award commemorating his outstanding service and leadership.

More recently, Jim successfully created and directed the Garden State Basketball League of New Jersey, which allowed over 200 youth teams (over 2000 players)  from 4th through 8th grade boys and girls  to compete in both fall and winter basketball leagues. Jim also participated in the Readington Holiday Basketball Tournament as a referee for many years.

We thank and remember Jim for all of his contributions to our youth by awarding the All Tournament Player Award in the Cynthia K. Critelli Memorial Tournament in his memory.
