'A' STATE 'A' XC RESULTS.

Class A boys: It was a day for Colters at Rebecca Farm as Hamilton's Colter Purcell finished first in 16:17.52 and teammate Colter Kirkland was second in 16:40.26 to lead the Broncs to a runaway state championship with 35 points. Ronan's Brant Heiner was third (16:46.80) and Bryson Rogers was fourth (16:47.76) to help Hardin finish second, 19 points behind the Broncs. Tanner Nead of Hamilton (16:48.01) rounded out the top five. Columbia Falls was third, four points ahead of Corvallis and another 16 below Ronan.

Class A girls: Brynnli Poulsen of Hamilton was the individual medalist in 19:02.30 but Laurel had the Nos. 2, 6, 11, 13 and 18 finishes to take the team crown with 50 points. Andira Mourich paced the Locomotives in 19:53.15, followed by Carly Cook in sixth (20:02.56), Grace Timm in 11th (20:28.52), Lauren Taylor in 13th (20:30:21) and Ruby Smith in 18th (20:36.55). Hannah Sempf was third (20:00.84) and Lara Erickson fourth (20:01.94) to help Columbia Falls finish second with 70 points, 12 ahead of Hardin. The Bulldogs' Madison Harmer was seventh (20:12.31) and Dierra Takes Enemy ninth (20:18.99). Corvallis' Olivia Buoy placed fourth (20:01.94)

Colter Purcell was second (16:30.88), Colter Kirkland third (16:49.90) and Lane Cole fourth for the Broncs, whose 26 points far outpaced Whitefish (60) and Ronan (81). Hamilton's Brynnli Poulsen easily won the girls race in 18:48.71, but Lara Erickson in second (20:12.70) and Hannah Sempf in third (20:24.65) helped Columbia Falls to the team crown, 11 points head of Corvallis. The Blue Devils' Katie Gleason was fourth (20:34.83) and Olivia Buoy fifth (20:50.16).

WILDCATS REPEAT AS STATE CHAMPS

In Class A, Columbia Falls repeated as state champions with another balanced effort. The Wildcats’ top five runners finished no worse than 22nd, accounting for a team total of 65, 11 spots better than when Columbia Falls won the title in 2018.

Junior Aidan Jarvis was the fastest Wildcat (16:29.35) in fourth place. Joining him in all-state position were classmate James Role in seventh (16:49.87) and sophomore Jimmy James Petersen in 11th (16:57.79). Senior Joe Lamb (21st) and junior Seth Umbriaco (22nd) rounded out the Wildcats’ top five.

Hardin was second as a team (86) and Lewistown finished third (98) behind individual state champion Sam Fulbright (16:10.43).

Whitefish senior Miles Vrentas crossed the line in 19th and classmate Bridger Gaertner placed 34th. The Bulldogs were eighth as a team.

The Whitefish girls, however, are coming home from state with a third-place trophy, one year after finishing in second. Senior Josephine Vardell earned all-state honors, placing sixth on Saturday, followed by teammates Jessica Henson (22nd), Paetra Cooke (23rd) and Maylani Horton (29th).

Columbia Falls, Corvallis run to victories

HAMILTON — The Columbia Falls boys and Corvallis girls ran to team titles at the Western A Fall Classic at the Hamilton Golf Club. (Results)

The Wildcats won the boys’ title with just 51 points. Hamilton and Corvallis tied for second at 93.

On the girls’ side, the Blue Devils posted 51 points. Whitefish took second at 65, followed by Hamilton and Columbia Falls at 115.

Colter Kirkland of Hamilton won the boys’ race in 16 minutes, 45.55 seconds, just edging James Normandeau of Ronan. Normandeau finished in 16:45.71. Tyler Schmautz of Frenchtown finished third at 16:52.

Senior Jayden Mitchell was the only Butte Central runner in the event, boy or girl. He finished the race in 22:30

Brynnli Poulsen of Hamilton finished in 18:53 to easily win the girls’ race. Madalen Shipman of Dillon placed second at 20:10. Josephine Vardell of Whitefish took third at 20:26.

The teams will head to the state meet next Saturday in Great Falls.

CORVALLIS — The Columbia Falls boys cross country team captured the Western A divisional title at the Western A Fall Classic in Corvallis on Saturday.

The Wildcats had three runners in the top 10 individually — Aidan Jarvis in fifth and James Role and James Peterson in ninth and 10th respectively. Joe Lamb was 15th,

Whitefish’s boys team was fifth overall.

Bridger Gaertner and Miles Vrentas were in 14th and 15th.

Whitefish’s girls team was runner up for a divisional title. Columbia Falls was fourth.

Josephine Vardell was the Bulldogs’ highest finisher at third place with a time of 20:26.91.

Jessica Henson was sixth.

Columbia Falls’ Lara Erickson raced to a fourth-place finish.

The All-Class State Cross Country Meet is the 26th at the Eagle Falls Golf Course in Great Falls.

Lamb, Frissell claim divisional x-country titles

Joe Lamb of Columbia Falls and Beatrix Frissell of Polson were individual winners while the Columbia Falls boys and Whitefish girls captured the team titles on Saturday for the Western A Divisional cross country meet at Rebecca Farm.

Lamb crossed the finish line in 16 minutes, 26.6 seconds, almost seven seconds ahead of teammate and runner-up Seth Umbriaco.

James Role of Columbia Falls was seventh, 16:48.6.

Columbia Falls posted a team score of 39 to finish well ahead of second place Frenchtown, 76, and third-place Corvallis, 78.

Frissell turned in a time of 18:44.5 with Brynnli Poulsen of Hamilton, 18:47.4, second. They were the only runners to break 19 minutes.

Whitefish’s Jessica Henson, 19:56.5, was fourth; Ella Greenberg, 20:00.2, fifth; and Jade Greenberg, 20:05.2, sixth.

On the team front, Whitefish finished with a 59 score. Corvallis, 83, was second and Polson, 105, third.

The season concludes on Saturday with the state meet in Missoula at the University of Montana golf course.

Boys' state cross country: Corvallis earns team title

HELENA — The Corvallis boys' cross country team captured its fourth State A team title in eight years Saturday in Montana's showcase meet at Bill Roberts Golf Course.

The Blue Devils finished with 109 points behind all-staters Anders Watt and Jake Jessop. Watt took third in 16:40 and Jessop 13th in 17:19.

“The boys ran well all season. We had four seniors and their hard work brought the other kids along with them,” explained Blue Devils’ coach Joanne Cleveland.

The Class A individual crown was garnered by Levi Taylor of Laurel, who passed Hamilton’s Matt Wilson in the last 150 yards for a 16:29 finish and a five-second victory.

“I was in third most of the way, conserving my energy behind Anders (Watt) and Matt,” Taylor recounted. “About halfway Matt picked up the pace and I went with him. Then he put on a burst trying to get rid of me, but I’ve always had a good kick.

“He beat me at Mountain West by half a second, but I beat him by 20 seconds at the 7-7, and I had confidence I could do it again today.”

2015 DIVISIONAL RESULTS

BC’s Brian McGeehan places 14th at Western A Divisional

POLSON — Butte Central sophomore cross country runner Brian McGeehan placed 14^th at the Western A Divisional meet Saturday.

The top 15 runners earn All-Conference recognition.

McGeehan finished the 3-mile race in 16 minutes, 42 seconds in the final tune up before next week’s State meet in Great Falls. That was a career-best time for McGeehan.

Cameron Meikle of Hamilton won the boys’ race in 15:18. Ronald Venema of Corvallis was second in 15:32, followed by Hunter Casey of Stevensville at 16:50.

Also for the Maroons, Theron Nelson ran his best time of the season, placing 46^th in 18:52. Zach Carlson took 49^th in 19:12, while Nathan Ortega ran a career-best 19:55 and placed 54^th. Ian Campbell took 58^th in 20:29.

Nine teams from the Northwestern A and Southwestern A competed in the “Super Divisional.”

Corvallis won the team title with 32 points. Frenchtown was next at 76, while Hamilton took third at 96.

The Blue Devils also won the girl’s team title, scoring 56 points. Whitefish was next at 57, followed by Polson at 65.

Hamilton’s Jaycie Schmalz won the team title in 18:15. Barrett Gray of Whitefish placed second at 18:57.

BC’s Abby McGee placed 39^th with a time of 22:50.

All six BC runners will head to State next week.

WHITEFISH -- Two weeks before state cross-country meets begin in Great Falls, the Frenchtown boys and Whitefish girls excelled in one of their final tune ups.

Frenchtown put five runners in the top 15 to edge Thompson Falls 45-53 on Saturday morning.

The Broncs were led by Jaden Rowe, whose time of 17 minutes, 2 seconds was good enough for second. He was followed by teammate Block Rugg just one second behind in third.

Frank Dean was 11th for Frenchtown. He was joined in the top 15 by Anders Holmquist in 14th and Casey Jones in 15th.

Thompson Falls put four in the top 15, led by Dan McDonald and Justin Gustafson in sixth and seventh.

Ronan was third with three in the top 15. Jackson Duffey was fifth with a time of 17:30. Fellow Chiefs Nathan Dennis and Daniel Koehler were 12th and 13th respectively.

Whitfish scored a win with a team total of 27. Led by second-place finisher Barrett Gray, all five Bulldogs were in the top 13; Sarah Perez was fifth, Braya Hobson was sixth, Laurel Davidson was 10th and Annika Gordon crossed the line in 13th.

Plains' Kimberly Earhart won the race in 19:28. Teammate Demi Horton was third.

Frenchtown sweeps Ronan Canal Bank Run

RONAN -- Frenchtown swept the team titles Friday at the Ronan Canal Bank Run cross country meet.

Frenchtown boys occupied seven of the top 11 places in the standings, with the top five posting a team score of 29. Hamilton was second at 48, followed by Ronan at 78.

Hamilton's Cameron Meikle was the first boy to cross the finish line, clocking in at 16 minutes, 3 seconds. Frenchtown's Jaiden Rowe was next at 16:41, followed by Hamilton's Matt Wilson at 16:47. Frenchtown's Brock Rugg was fourth in 16:54 and Ronan's Jackson Duffey took fifth at 17:00.

The girls' race was much more tightly contest as just six points separated first from third. Frenchtown won with 51, followed by Hamilton at 55 and Deer Lodge at 57.

Hamilton's Jaycie Schmalz (18:59) and Keelie O'Brien (20:52) claimed the top two spots. Frenchtown's Lizzy Mattson was third in 21:32, Ronan's Ashley McCready was fourth at 21:58, and Beti Lombardi of Deer Lodge was fifth at 22:03.

LIBBY — Annie Hill of Glacier opened the high school cross country season with a blistering time at the Libby Invitational on Saturday.

The sophomore and defending Class AA state champion was clocked in 16:25.69 at J Neils Park. She finished nearly 30 seconds ahead of runner-up, Bryn Morley of Bigfork.

Conditions were ideal for running with cool temperatures and a slight mist.

Hill’s time would have placed her ninth in the boys competition.

Glacier had four girls in the top 10, which helped the Wolfpack take team honors with a 33 score. Flathead was second with 53.

Flathead finished 1-2 on the boys side with Jake Perrin times in 15:16.51 and Ben Perrin, a freshman, was next at 15:46.90.

Flathead had five runners in the top 20 and posted a team-best score of 27.

Glacier was second at 42.

The Whitefish boys and girls were third.

“For us, that’s good,” Whitefish coach Sarah Brist said.

“I’m pleased with our performance today behind Glacier and Flathead. The kids did well with summer running and I’m looking forward to see how we do (Thursday) at Ronan.”

Ronan Invitational cross country: Whitefish girls finish 2nd

RONAN — The Whitefish girls finished second with Eureka checking in third and Columbia Falls fourth at the Ronan Invitational cross country meet on Thursday at Mission Mountain Golf Course.

Corvallis posted a 36 team score to 107 for Whitefish, 147 for Eureka and 150 for Columbia Falls.

Barrett Gray led Whitefish, placing third in 19 minutes, 52.05 seconds.

Hamilton’s Jaycie Schmalz had the winning time — 19:24.40.

Corvallis also won the boys team title with a 33 mark. Whitefish, 176, was fifth, Eureka, 182, sixth and Columbia Falls, 183, seventh.

Ronald Veneman of Corvallis was the individual winner in 15:50.01.

Butte High and Butte Central’s cross country runners showed that they are nearing peak condition Saturday at the Butte Invitational.

Three weeks before the State meet, the Bulldogs and Maroons posted solid times at a chilly Highland View Golf Course.

“”I believe they all either had a personal best or season best,” said Butte High assistant coach Ashely Choquette. “(Head coach) Guy (Wadas) and I were extremely happy with the performances by all the kids today. “The kids have moved into phase two of their training where we’ve added more pace work to our runs. We have been practicing more on grass as well to simulate the majority of our races.”

Butte Central coach Bob Johnson echoed Choquette. The long-time BC mentor pointed out that his team is finally beyond an injury and illness bug that has hampered the team in recent weeks.

“I was pleased with how they all ran,” Johnson said. “They are all definitely still improving, so I hope they peak by the State meet.”

Kalispell Glacier’s Annie Hill runs to the win.

The meet saw fast times all around, and none were faster than Missoula Sentinel’s Marshall Beatty and Kalispell Glacier’s Annie Hill.

Hill won the girls’ race, finishing the 3-mile course in 17 minutes, 2 seconds. The sophomore beat Billings Senior freshman Tiahna Vladic, the second-place runner, by 18 seconds.

Beatty, a junior, finished the course in a blistering 14:47. Defending Class AA State champion Aidan Reed placed second in 15:09.

Butte High senior Nic Raiser paced Butte High’s boys, placing 24^th in 16:45.

Bulldog sophomore Austin Gerry finished in 17:31. Junior Kyle Konda finished in 17:47 and sophomore Erik Casagranda crossed in 17:55.

Also for the Butte High boys, senior Seth Grant ran in 18:25 and senior Gunther Clark ran in 18:53.

Choquette pointed out that freshman Kasey Krzan (18:56) and Garrett Miller (18:57) both broke the 19-minute mark in the junior varsity race.

Butte High’s boys placed 15^th with 382 points. Billings Senior won with 47. Helena High followed with 124. Butte Central placed 20^th at 587.

Sophomore Brian McGeehan paced the Maroons, finishing in an impressive 17:03.

Freshman Zach Carlson (19:07) and sophomore Theron Nelson (19:13) broke the 20-minute mark. Sophomore Nathan Ortega finished in 20:39, while Ian Campbell crossed in 22:10.

Junior Abby McGee, BC’s lone girl runner, finished in 21:47.

Butte High junior Joby Rosenleaf led the Butte High girls, crossing the finish line in 19:22. Teammate Cati Carmody, a junior, finished in 20:21.

Sophomore Rosie Real (22:26), junior Sydney Pendergast (23:06), senior Abby Burke (23:48), junior Sheridan Hafer (25:17) and junior Haley Mellott (26:23) also ran for the Bulldogs.

For the first time, the meet included elementary races, and 38 runners competed in the 1-mile competition. Meet organizers are planning on making this an annual event.

Kennedy Elementary won the Traveling Team Spirit Trophy for having the most finishers with 16.

The middle school race also drew a large field, with 125 boys and 105 girls running.

GREAT FALLS INVITE RESULTS

Hellgate boys win Great Falls Invite

GREAT FALLS -- Missoula Hellgate's boys were first and the girls were second at the Great Falls Invitational cross country meet Friday at Eagle Falls Golf Course.

Hellgate's boys bunched four runners in the top 12 to finish with a score of 57, just good enough to nip Billings Senior with 60. Kalispell Flathead was third at 119.

Senior took the girls' crown with a score of 45, while Hellgate checked in at 70. Flathead was again third at 88.

Missoula Sentinel's Marshall Beatty won the boys' race with a time of 15 minutes, 18.84 seconds. Helena's Aidan Reed was next at 15:36.14, followed by Jake Perrin of Flathead at 16:02.2.

Peter Kirgis finished seventh, Preston Novak was eighth and Isaac Schmidt was ninth to lead Hellgate.

Kalispell Glacier's Annie Hill won the girls' race in 17:08.67. Senior's Christina Aragon was a distant second at 17:29.35, followed by teammate Tiahna Vladic at 17:53.92.

Hellgate's Ella Degrandpre was fourth at 18:20, followed by Flathead's Kaitlin Wride at 18:26.42.

Hamilton was 11th and Ronan 12th in the girls' small-school race, which was comprised primarily of Class AA junior varsity teams. Hamilton's boys were fourth, Ronan ninth and Loyola Sacred Heart 14th. Hamilton swept the individual titles with Matt Wilson winning the boys' race in 17:00 and Jaycie Schmalz the girls' race in 20:04.

When Brody Smith arrived in Missoula from Cody, Wyoming on Friday, he met up with Montana cross country coach Colin Fehr for an unofficial recruiting visit before making his way to the UM Golf Course to view the Mountain West Classic course he would be running through Saturday morning.

The 2014 race champion, Smith had no reason to think the course had undergone any changes. After all, the race used the same track for the last seven years and he, nor anyone else at Cody High, had been informed of any changes.

So when Fehr informed Smith that he would have to climb the hill twice and the second time would come minutes before crossing the line, Smith, an experienced hill climber, was a bit dismayed.

"I thought, 'Oh God. Once was bad enough -- they're trying to kill us here.' It was awful," Smith said.

It may have been awful -- and mentally defeating for one race favorite -- but Smith says he won his second consecutive Mountain West Classic title on the hill that has always been a part of the race before a second pass over it was added to the 2015 version for the first time.

The course alteration was made to make the race more fan friendly, and that's exactly what it did. Fans ran to and from the finish line to the flagged off corridor that led the runners to the base of the dreaded mound.

And while fans enjoyed the new views, Smith, and girls' race winner Annie Hill, who also repeated in victory, took advantage of the climb: Smith won his race by 9 seconds over Sentinel's Marshall Beatty, and Kalispell Glacier's Hill cruised to victory by outrunning Christina Aragon of Billings Senior by 15 seconds.

Bozeman's boys and girls, who have become a dynasty in cross country in Montana, won both team meets.

Individually, Smith and Hill used the hill to distance themselves from the packs in pursuit.

"I attacked the hill" said Smith, who will be in Missoula until Monday for his unofficial recruiting visit with the Grizzlies. "I feel like it's not the same approach everyone else is going to have. Maintain your energy through it is what most people will do. So to attack it and run it hard will -- I feel like it mentally defeats people and gives you that gap."

Smith said he made up a short gap between he and Beatty, who was fresh off setting a Sentinel school record, as they ascended the first pass. He pulled away by about 10 meters and then continually pulled away.

The second pass allowed Smith to put approximately another 25 meters distance between he and Beatty.

Though the second ascension was news to him, Smith was well prepared. The topography of Cody forces Smith and his teammates to constantly run up hills during their daily runs and the team made it a focus as the MWC approached.

"We were just naturally prepared -- just naturally battle ready," Smith said.

Beatty jumped out to the initial lead, pulling Smith, Helena's Aidan Reed, Bigfork's Logan Morley and Flathead's Jake Perrin with him. He led until the pack approached the hill.

It was Smith's race from there, but Beatty stayed on his heels and finished with his third sub-15:20 time of the season.

"It was fast, but I was really going more for place here than time," Beatty said. "I'm all right with second, but I really wanted first. First is what I strive for."

Beatty admitted that Smith's presence was added motivation. That held true for other Montana runners. On Friday, Reed, the reigning AA champ and the winner of the 2013 MWC, said he was looking forward to running against Smith.

Reed was running with Hunter Simpson of Washington's University High, Zak Kindl out of Spokane and Perrin until the final pass through the hill, which proved to be too much for the senior Bengal.

"Mentally, I wasn't demanding enough of myself," a clearly dispirited Reed said. "Physically, I'm in a good place and I'm recovering from my iron deficiency, but mentally the going got tough and just for the first time I let it consume me."

Like Beatty, Hill got out to a fast lead, but unlike the Sentinel harrier, the sophomore not only held on, but pulled away. The race's public address announcer estimated she had a 50-meter lead over Bigfork's Bryn Morley before descending the first hill.

By her final lap she ahead by 15 seconds over Aragon and Bozeman's Piper Meuwissen, who replaced Morley in the lead pack.

"It's really nice to be able to come back and win again," said Hill, who won the 2014 AA cross country title as a freshman. "I didn't feel as great as I did in the past, but it was still good."

Hill said she expected Morley would try to grab an early lead, so it was imperative to stay with her during the opening meters. Despite running past the competition, Hill said she never really set a comfortable pace.

"It was a weird feeling, I don't know what was different. It was just weird," she said.

Hellgate's girls, led by freshman Ella Degrandpre, finished third behind the Hawks and Billings Senior, which placed two runners in the top five.

"Overall the girls had a great day and I think they progressed really nicely from our first race of the year," Hellgate coach Anders Brooker said. "I think there were a few girls in there who didn't have their best day, but as a team I'm really happy. I felt like it went about as good as it could have gone at this point in the season."

Brooker said the reaction to the addition of the second pass over the hill was mixed. Some coaches and athletes were in favor, while others weren't sure it was necessary.

"The meet is going to have to evaluate, which they knew," Brooker said. "This was the year to try it and who knows what it will hold for next year. It was fun to try it, but definitely a mixed bag."

Sentinel girls win Flathead Invite

KALISPELL -- The Missoula Sentinel girls' cross country team took top honors Saturday in the Flathead Invitational at Rebecca Farm.

The Spartans benefited from four top-10 finishes. Ellen Brooks took fourth with a time of 18 minutes, 21.3 seconds. Madeline Hamilton was sixth in 18:56.9, Molly MacDonald seventh in 19:00.4 and Kelsey Mueller 10th in 20:35.2.

The Spartans finished with 37 points to underscore second-place Kalispell Glacier by seven. Annie Hill led the Wolfpack with a winning time of 17:48.6.

In the boys' competition, Kalispell Flathead ran away with top honors. The Braves finished with 35 points, which was 17 less than runner-up Glacier.

Marshall Beatty of Sentinel won the boys' race in 14:50.3. He was followed by Bigfork's Logan Morley, who posted a time of 15:38.5.

BC’s McGeehan 9th, McGee 14th in first cross country meet

LIVINGSTON — Butte Central’s cross country team got off to a strong start to the season Friday.

Sophomore Brian McGeehan and junior Abby McGee led the way for the Maroons. McGeehan finished the 3-mile race in 18 minutes, 11 seconds. That was good for ninth place overall on the boys’ side.

McGee, BC’s lone girl runner, finished in 23:12 and took 14^th overall on the girls’ side.

Sophomore Theron Nelson placed 30^th in 20:09, while BC’s two freshmen didn’t finish far behind. Zach Nelson took 33^rd at 20:18, while fellow freshman Cade Wyatt took 41^st at 20:54.

Junior Ian Campbell and sophomore Nathan Ortega didn’t have 10 official practices in, so they couldn’t race.

“They all ran great for the first meet and training conditions they have had,” BC coach Bob Johnson said.

The Maroons are back in action Tuesday when they host the Butte Central Invitational on the golf course at Fairmont Hot Springs.

GREGSON — Butte Central and Butte High runners got their feet week — and a little more —Tuesday evening at the Butte Central Invitational cross country meet.

The race, held on the Fairmont Hot Springs Golf Course, was the season opener for Butte High and just the second meet of the season for the Maroons.

“I think they ran good,” Johnson said, pointing out the lack of practice time because of the smoky conditions the last two weeks. “They’re in not too bad of shape. We’ll be in better shape.”

Helena High senior Aidan Reed easily ran away with the boys’ title. The defending Class AA State champion completed the 3-mile course in 15 minutes, 56 seconds, more than a minute faster than second-place Corvallis’ Ronald Venema (16:57).

Helena High also won the boys’ team title with 62 points. Corvallis was second at 88, followed by Frenchtown at 136. Butte High placed seventh at 229, while BC took 10^th at 346.

Butte High senior Nic Raiser place fifth in the intense boys race that saw a couple of pile ups as runners slid on the wet grass on the finish line. Raiser’s time was 17:39 on the course known for slower marks.

“Overall I’m pretty happy,” Wadas said. “Nic had a great race.”

Wadas pointed out the intense offseason work put in by Raiser, a four-year varsity runner for the Bulldogs.

“He wants to (be a contender),” the coach said. “That’s his goal.”

Wadas also praised the rest of the Bulldogs. Going into the season he stressed that tight finishes by his second through seventh runners was key to his team placing high at meets.

“The pack did exactly what I wanted them to do,” Wadas said. “They worked together like I asked them too.”

Butte High’s Shannon Tempel placed 47^th at 19:36. Austin Gerry (19:45), Erik Casagrnada (20:19), Seth Grant (20:24), Clark Gunther (20:25) and Lathan Rickets (21:20) also ran varsity for the Bulldogs.

Sophomore Brian McGeehan paced Butte Central with a time of 18:40, good for 24^th place. He pointed out that his time was over 21 minutes at the same meet last year.

Theron Nelson (21:12), Zack Carlson (21:14), Cade Wyatt (21:37), Ian Campbell (22:11) and Nathan Orgtega (24:23) also ran for the Maroons.

The fastest race by a Butte High girls’ runner came in the junior varsity meet where junior Joby Rosenleaf ran away with the title in 22.24. The second-place runner was more than a minute behind.

Rosenleaf wasn’t on the varsity team because the Aug. 21 Purple-White race was the qualifier, and Rosenleaf had to sit out the race because of a migraine headache. She’ll definitely be in the varsity lineup when the Bulldogs run in Bozeman on Sept. 12.

“She would have been in the top 10 in the varsity race,” Wadas said. “She was coasting that last mile. If she had some competition, she would have been up in the top five, that’s my guess.”

As it is, her time would have been sixth place in the varsity race.

Claudia Downey of Helena High won in 20:41. Jaycie Schmalz of Hamilton was a close second at 20:46.

The Bengals won the team title at 66. Helena Capital was a close second at 74, followed by Corvallis at 77. Butte High placed eighth at 245.

Rosie Real (25:19), Abby Burke (26:56), Sydney Prendergast (27:48), Sheridan Hafer (28:57) and Maya Robins (29:35) also ran for Butte High.

Johnson said he isn’t sure yet when BC will run next. He said a couple of potential meets were canceled, leaving the Maroons’ plans up in the air.

“Now,” the coach said, “we see what we need to work on.”
