Hurst L.D. Bell 3, Flower Mound 2: Hurst L.D. Bell continued its stunning ways against Flower Mound. With a two-run seventh-inning rally and the game-winning hit by No. 9 hitter Austin Simmons, L.D. Bell won Game 1 in a best-of-3 series.
L.D. Bell (23-7) upset Flower Mound, ranked seventh in the state last year, in the first round last season. Flower ...Mound (22-9) had a 2-1 lead before Bell rallied with the bottom of its order.

L.D. Bell’s patience results in rout of rival Euless Trinity
It was a patient approach at the plate, working the count and taking pitches that allowed Bell (20-6, 8-3 District 6-5A) to quickly get on Trinity starting pitcher Reeder Mengwasser.
After scoring a run in the first inning, Bell strung together at-bats of anywhere from six to nine pitches as it drove in five runs in the top of the second.
Bell center fielder Mason Peterson started the carousel by driving in the first run of the second inning on a double.
Bell loaded the bases, and Mengwasser hit a batter to score a run and was pulled for reliever Preston Inman, who walked in a run. Matt Molina followed with a single that drove in two.
Bell coach Paul Gibson agreed his team’s approach in the first few innings created the early rally against their rival Trinity (17-9-1, 7-4 District 6-5A).
“We obviously strung some together in the second and that helped,” he said. “That was the key offensively.”
On the mound, Bell starting pitcher Bryce Kidwell threw a two-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts, which Gibson said was one of his best outings of the year.
“Bryce threw a gem,” he said. “That’s a good hitting team. Shut them out and hold them to two hits, that’s a nice performance. He’s been doing that for us all year.”
Gibson found himself watching the game from outside the fence after arguing a call in the top of the second, when his runner was called out when he appeared to have beat the throw.
Gibson couldn’t remember the last time he had been tossed from a game.
“Not in a long while,” he said.

Colleyville Heritage overcomes five-run deficit to walk off in extras over Bell
COLLEYVILLE — Colleyville Heritage competed a six-run comeback in extra innings for a 7-6 victory over L.D. Bell to take a game advantage over the Blue Raiders in District 6-5A.
Senior Connor Erickson jump-started both the tying and the game-winning rallies for Heritage (13-11, 6-1 6-5A) with a pinch-hit home run in the bottom of the seventh and a double in the bottom of the eighth.
In the eighth, Erickson doubled off the wall right center, moving Daniel Siebenberg to third. Two batters later with the bases loaded, designated hitter Chris Scherff hit a ball off the end of the bat for a walk-off infield hit.
Heritage’s seventh-inning rally began with a lead-off, pinch-hit homer by Erickson over the left-field fence, cutting Bell’s lead to 6-3.
Heritage took advantage of a Bell miscue on its next at-bat when Logan Swofford reached on a dropped third strike.
After a double by Scherff, Heritage cleanup hitter Trey Smith roped a two-run triple off the wall in left. Smith scored the tying run on Ryan Ramsey sacrifice flied to left. Smith had just enough time to slide under the tag at the plate.
Bell (17-5, 5-2) jumped out to a 6-1 lead after a four-run top of the fourth and run in the third and a home run to center by catcher Zach Plunkett. Bell scored four runs on only one hit, two errors, three walks and a hit batter.
Heritage created an opportunity in the top of the third, loading the bases with two outs, but starting pitcher Bryce Kidwell got out of the jam on a ground ball for the third out.
Heritage remains tied with Euless Trinity a top the 6-5A standings. Bell slipped a game back.

Hurst Bell gets ahead early to down Grapevine
GRAPEVINE — A fast start helped Hurst L.D. Bell pick up a 4-2 victory over Grapevine on Tuesday in the District 6-5A opener for both teams.
Bell (13-3, 1-0 6-5A) scored two runs in both the second and third innings to give starter Bryce Kidwell plenty of cushion.
Chad Adams reached on a leadoff walk to open the second inning. Adams scored on an RBI double by Chad Williams, who was driven in by Riley Ferguson.
The first two batters of the third inning also scored for Bell, as a series of walks and singles pushed John Mark Garner and Trevor Ward home.
“I thought we had some good at-bats early on,” Bell coach Paul Gibson said. “We left some people on and their guy did a good job of pitching out of some jams early. He settled in, and we couldn’t quite get to him.”
Kidwell used his fastball to stay ahead of batters through the first half of the game, but gave up two runs in the fourth inning to Grapevine (8-9, 0-1).
Right fielder Grant McClelland led off the inning with a first-pitch home run over the left field wall on a slider Kidwell left high in the strike zone.
The homer was followed by a single and a Drake Adair double on another pitch left high by Kidwell.
A trip to the mound by Gibson helped get Kidwell back into the rhythmt that got Bell the lead.
“[Gibson] came out there and said to stop letting them get ahead of you,” Kidwell said. “You go after them and I got back in it.”
Kidwell faced just one batter over the minimum in the final three innings, walking one batter in the bottom of the seventh.
He leaned more on a slider through those frames.
“He did a good job of commanding all three pitches,” Gibson said. “Balls that he left up, those are the ones they hit hard, but he did a good job of not giving them anything. He made them earn it.”
