The Owings Mills Track Club was started in March of 2002 by Dr. Vince Rollo, as an affiliate of the Owings Mills Recreation and Parks Council. It is a competitive track and field club for boys and girls age 7-18. We have approximately 100 children on the team each season, and a host of dedicated coaches with over 70 yrs of combined experience in Sprints, Jumps, Throws and Distance running. All coaches and volunteers go through an extensive background check from both governing bodies of track and field (USATF and AAU) as well as the county parks and recreation council.
The Track & Field season is broken into two outdoor seasons, Spring and Summer. The Spring outdoor track season begins in March and finishes the last weekend in May. Competition for the Spring season is typically within an hours drive, competing against teams in Maryland, Virginia and DC. The Summer outdoor track season begins the first week in June and ends the first week in August at the culmination of the AAU Jr. Olympics. The Summer season is geared towards kids interested in competing against the best in the country and the focus is preparing for the Jr Olympic (JO) games. Parents and athletes should be prepared to compete in the national qualifiers, typically the entire month of June, and to travel to JO, typically anywhere in the country for a week of competition in the first week of August.
For kids 7-14 (not in High School) who wish to compete in the Summer season, it is required that they sign up for the Spring season as well. For High school students wishing to sign up for the Summer season, it is required that they have competed on their high school team. Kids who sign up for Spring only will have an opportunity to sign up for Summer at the end of the Spring season . All Registration and Payments are handled on line
Registration for Spring and Spring/Summer starts from the first week in January, and ends in February or when we have reached our maximum capacity of 120 kids. Practice starts from March (weather permitting), on Tue/Thur/Sat for Spring kids and Mon/Tue/Thur/Sat for Summer kids. Saturday practice will only be held until competition begins, usually the first week in May. Some specialty events practice will be held on Monday for kids (Spring/Summer) interested in Hurdles and Triple Jump, and on Wednesday for Kids interested in High Jump. The team competes throughout Maryland in AAU and USATF sponsored events. Competitions are usually on Saturday or Sunday each weekend from May thru July.
Parents are asked to volunteer some of their time helping with meet day activities for one or more meets or as a helper to one of the coaching groups during practice. If parents are unwilling to volunteer for personal reasons, an additional $50 fee will be assessed at registration, the hope is that each parent will choose to volunteer.
Our practice location is typically at Newtown High School, with running practices on Tuesday's and Thursday's from 6:30 to 8:00pm. Throws and Hurdles practice are typically on Monday's and Wednesday's from 5:30 to 7:00pm. High Jump practice is typically on Wednesday from 6:00 - 8:00pm, with long and Triple Jump practice on Tueday and Thurday's from 6:00pm to 7:00pm
