Seals Players Help Take the SF Glens to Finals!

November 7, 2006
The San Francisco Glens defeated El Farolito this past Sunday at Boxer Stadium in the Semi-Finals of the California Premier Soccer Association Championships by a score of 3-1.

The San Francisco Glens, the off-season home of many local San Francisco Seals players, played El Farolito for the third time this season. The previous two games ended in tied games with a total of only 2 goals in 180 minutes of soccer. Neither team could seem to get the edge on the other. However, in the third match, Sunday's Semi-Finals, it was a different story. The first goal came only 16 minutes into the game when Aaron Girard sent a left flank pass to the far post where John Colan, the top goal scorer for the Glens, headed the ball into the net. Ten minutes later, Rich Halvorsen sent a 50 yard pass through the right side of the El Farolito defense. John Colan, once again, was available. He took the ball on a full run and slotted it by the keeper.

El Farolito responded by picking up the intensity of their attack. For the most part, the Glens handled the El Farolito attack very well. However at the 36th minute, El Farolito got a break when the turf loosed below the foot of Rich Halvorsen allowing the El Farolito attacker to penetrate our 18 yard box and slip a pass to a teammate leading to their only goal of the match.

In the second half, the Glens maintained a balanced game of play, which effectively countered off El Farolito's relentless attacks. With 15 minutes remaining in the half, Luis Aguilar put the game away on a Glen's counter when he knifed through two El Farolito defenders and put the ball in the net. From that point on, the game was the Glen's game to control. El Farolito lost composure and picked up a red card which thinned out their attack and made them more vulnerable to Glen counters.

Seals players who participated in Sunday's match include: Rich Halvorsen, Shani Simpson, Ben Gucciardi, John Colan, John Carson and Jovan Milojevich. Kevin Mira, a youth product of the Seals Academy, also played in the match. Dan Benton, who played USL D2 soccer for the Charlotte Eagles, was in goal. Bryan Baird and Luis Aguilar, two outstanding players from the college ranks, started Sunday's match. Glens stalwarts and long time Bay Area players also on the pitch Sunday were Aaron Girard, Anthony Navarro, Luis Orellana, and Ramon Estevez. John Hutchinson, who was on the Seals roster as a goalkeeper, was also available but was nursing an injury and didn't get any action.

Radio 1010 from San Francisco did a lengthy review of the game. They interviewed Tom Simpson, Glen's (and the Seals) head coach, John Colan and Ramon Estevez.
