Paying Tribute to Jayvon Urena A.K.A JJ

Our beloved Jayvon recently passed on May 10, 2022. Jayvon was a wonderful son, brother, and friend who touched the lives of those around him. He leaves behind his mother, Yadira Torres, his sister Arianna Haynes-Barksdale, his brother Tory Barksdale, and his grandfather Manual Torres A.KA “Pops.” Jayvon dedicated his life to playing football and spreading joy and laughter to those closest to him. His main objective was to make sure those around him were happy, even before his happiness. This single trait that he possessed was enough to gain a lifetime of genuinely hurt friends by this loss. We are all facing one of the most significant losses we have ever had to face. We want to give Jayvon the proper memorial to honor his memory and say our last goodbyes. I am currently asking for donations to help cover the cost of Jayvon’s funeral. We need to raise $15,000 to send our loved one to heaven with the proper memorial that he deserves.

(Necessary Improvement For Today's Youth)

Thank you for taking the time to visit the Nifty Sports Organization website. We are more than what we have been in the past and working everyday to grow as we move into the future. Our neighborhood is not what we want it to be but by working with the youth and their parents, it will be a better place in the future. We offer tutoring, mentoring and also organized sports training and conditioning. We serve our community by providing a safe place for our youth to go after school and on weekends. The Nifty Organization is most definitely a  "necessary improvement" over what had been available "for today's youth in our community."

Our program, with the help of great volunteer parents and community members, impacts the lives of hundreds of inner city youth living in the Paterson, NJ area each year. We are proud of the work that we do. We exist because we want our youth to succeed academically and have an opportunity to participate in organized sports that would otherwise not be available to them. As a participant of our program, the children learn organizational skills, respect, discipline and character. We feel that these skills will help them to make better choices and stay safe despite their environment. The Nifty Organization offers children the leadership and guidance that they are missing during their spare time. We understand the challenges of being a working parents with multiple jobs, single parents trying to make ends meet and parents to just need help balancing the load. We motivate the children to think bigger than what is around them and to dream bigger than what they see every day. If we can keep them off the street and engage them in more positive activities we have done our job. 

The area that we serve in is challenging. Children often have to travel across town for activities and practices. They will walk the long walk just to be a part of our great organization. We believe that they do so because they are committed to being a part of our organization. For this reason, we are proud when we see the magnitude of children who show up each day to participate in our program. We encourage a positive experience for every child in our organization. It is inspiring when every level of your program is full to capacity.It is not hard to achieve because many of the children return year after year and participate in multiple areas of the program. We work hard to nurture them while we have them with us and encourage them to be  the best version of themselves every day. Being a part of the Nifty organization provides our children with options. For some it may seem like just sports but we at Nifty believe that we provide our children with options and an alternative to all of the other distractions in our area that could impact their lives and their futures. Our youth are provided an alternative to  the hanging in the streets or spending idle time playing video games. They are not alone in the world. They are part of a big family that is attentive and supportive. Our Youth are building lifelong friendships and learning to be strong and independent. The streets are the last place that we want to see our youth. We want them on the field, on the court, in the dugout and in the classroom. 

Our program allows children to explore their talents in the areas of boys football, baseball, softball, boys and girls basketball, cheer-leading, and most recently soccer. Our staff and coaches are committed to the children we serve as well as the program that we are building. We are proud of how hard the children are working and how much they are growing as young men and young women in the community year after year.  We have so much more to do, but we are proud of all that we have been able to accomplish so far. 

During our football season, we are on the field every afternoon and evening working with the children. We work hard to  get them ready for the upcoming season. In addition to have practice during the week, we see them again on the weekend during our games. We love when the parents fill the stands. There is nothing like the feeling of catching a ball, running a play or making a touchdown and having someone from your family in the stands there to see you perform and scream your name.  We are making sure that our youth are not just performing on the field, but in school as well. Education is a priority in our community. Our hope is that the skills that we teach our children will help them to be successful in every area of their lives. The youth in our program are truly a  reflection of the heart of Paterson. They are the best part of this city and they represent the good qualities that are often missed by bad press and negative publicity.
