Nothing was going to stop the White team from cashing in on a coveted brisket dinner Saturday afternoon, as it scored on the first play from scrimmage and didn't look back, crushing the Red squad 33-10 at SUU football's annual Spring game at Eccles Coliseum.

The White team's win meant a first-class brisket meal, while the Red team was left with beans and franks.

"I'm going to love it and going to stuff myself," White team quarterback Aaron Cantu said.

Cantu was named the scrimmage MVP, throwing 13-of-16, 235 yards and three touchdowns, including a 75-yard touchdown strike to Chandler Allphin on the first play from scrimmage. Cantu then added a 34-yard touchdown pass to Naia Ursua and another 8-yard strike to Fatu Moala later in the game.

"He sees the field really well and obviously working throughout spring — it's his first spring here — he's getting to know the offense," SUU head coach Ed Lamb said. "He's still getting familiar with the offense, so I thought he took a big step forward today. We saw a little bit of the competitiveness that allowed him to strive so much in the junior college level. He didn't lead the country in passing without having some passing ability. I think we saw some of that today."

Cantu said the 75-yard touchdown pass to open the game gave him the confidence throughout the game. The pass itself was a harmless 11-yard cross route, but Allphin was able to slip past the Red defense to go all the way for a touchdown.

"I just got in a rhythm real early. First play of the game: touchdown pass," he said. "That really just got us going. After that, coaches were just calling the right plays and it was just a matter of getting it to the right guy."

Cantu has been in a heated battle for SUU's starting quarterback job and seemed to be the favorite for the job during the game. Jacob Allie went 7-of-15 for 101 yards and two interceptions for the Red team, while Mitch Dahlen went 6-for-13, 55 yards and an interception.

Tannon Pedersen was held out of the game with an ankle injury.

Lamb wouldn't say if he has made a direct decision at quarterback for the upcoming season, but hinted Cantu is likely the leader heading into summer. He said there is a possibility Allie could see a few snaps too next season.

"Right now we're feeling really positive about Aaron — throughout the last couple of weeks of Spring ball," Lamb said. "I thought that as a passer, he separated himself somewhat in his play in the last few practices. We still think there might still be a role for some of our guys at the quarterback position. It's important that Aaron has a really good summer, a really good fall training camp to hold onto the job."
