Jimmy Merling was 4-for-4 on Wed., May 15, in Proctor's 10-0 win over Two Harbors at home, and broke his tie with Ryan McCarthy (2012) for the most career hits in school history. McCarthy collected 89 hits between 2010 and 2012. Merling tied the record with two hits on Mon., May 13, as Proctor defeated Eveleth-Gilbert 13-3 at home.
Merling had 17 hits as a freshman in 2010, 30 as a sophomore in 2011, and 36 as a junior last year. His 36 hits last year is second only to McCarthy's school record of 38 hits in a season, set in 2011. Merling has 12 hits in 10 games in 2013 through Friday, May 17, and has 95 career hits.
The state record for career hits is 194 by Mike DesLauriers (Benilde St. Margaret's 2002-05). A player needs 144 to rank among the top ten in state history.
