It seemed as if Darzil Washington was everywhere Saturday for the East L.A. College football team.

That was especially true in overtime when the sophomore linebacker blocked the potential game-tying conversion to give the Huskies a 21-20 victory over West L.A. at Weingart Stadium.

The New Orleans native finished with 12 tackles (eight solo), 5.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble, a performance that earned him Mountain Conference defensive player of the week honors.

It gave ELAC its first  win in three games and something to build on as it hits the road Saturday to take on Mt. San Jacinto (1-1) in an American Division Mountain Conference opener. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

Mt. San Jacinto is coming off a 30-14 loss to L.A. Valley.

ELAC had other standouts against West L.A.

Quarterback Alek Barrera, making his first start, went 17 for 30 for 139 yards through the air, but also scored the Huskies’ TD in overtime on a one-yard run. Gustavo Ornelas tacked on the extra point, setting the stage for Washington’s heroics.

In regulation, Barrera, a native of Dallas, had a TD pass.

West L.A. got within a point on a 12-yard pass from Chase Crossley to LeRon Barnes. But Washington broke through to block Dennis Melara’s kick, ending the game.

Running back Naaman Young led the ground game with 23 carries for 141 yards and punter Hector Dominguez averaged 36.6 yards on five kicks, dropping two inside the 20.

West L.A. (0-2) opens its American Pacific Conference schedule Saturday by hosting Santa Monica (1-1) at 1 p.m.

The Wildcats had some individual highlights last week.

Treviel Boone rushed 16 times for 104 yards and a TD and defensive back Marlon Taylor had two interceptions and eight tackles (six solo).
