2015 GGSA/GCBL "Grand Slam" Cornhole Tournament
GREENVILLE — After being postponed by a winter storm on Feb. 21, the 2015 GGSA/GCBL Grand Slam Cornhole Tournament is in the books, and the seventh annual version has been deemed a success by its organizers once again.
A total of 31 singles players and 23 teams competed in the event. Competitors from all over the area converged on Greenville’s Paws Bingo Hall, coming from as far away as Louisville, Kentucky, to compete against some of the best players in the country.
Matt Guy of Alexandria, Kentucky, and Jay Dontson of Loveland took home first place in the competitive doubles division with Barry Hempy and Luke Worrell of Rushylvania taking second place.
Matt Guy now has won three GGSA/GCBL Grand Slam Tournament titles with those coming in 2015, 2013 and 2011 but has yet to win back-to-back titles. Matt Guy along with son Brett Guy are the only duo to win two titles. Chris Hobbs is the only player to win back-to-back championships, completing the feat in 2009 and 2010.
Jay Dotson and Matt Guy also took home first and second place in the Open Singles Division with 80-year-old James Vickers of New Castle, Indiana, taking third and Anne Vogel of Fort Wayne, Indiana, finishing in fourth place. The singles event had 31 players compete in the double-elimination tournament.
In the Recreational Doubles Division, it was Coy Cavins and Mark Lewis finishing first, Dan Freshour Jr. and Dan Freshour Sr. taking second and Richard Swiger and Roger Merkley finishing third.
Proceeds from this event are in support of the Greenville Girls Softball Association and Greenville Citizens Baseball League.
