April 19, 2015

Saturday Summary- BrewCrew 2-0

April 18, 2015

In Game One Saturday, McTravburger Alwine took the hill in the BrewCrew opener and put the BrewCrew in position to win despite several errors. He finished with three innings and 0 earned runs and left with a lead. Then Jason Terry made his BrewCrew debut and delivered 4 innings in relief and allowed only one run to shut down the Turtle.

Offensively the Brews put on a show. Brandon Eady went 3/4 with two runs and three RBIs and Brady Barr went 3/5 two runs and two RBIs to pace the offense.

Then in the finale, Steve Cooke put on a show in the nightcap of the Saturday action at the Battle of Baltimore. He threw a complete game no-hitter with 17 strikeouts. The Giants reached base only four times and Jason Welsh of the Giants was the only man not to strikeout. Cooke stuck out six batters twice and only allowed one batter to get into scoring position. The seventeen strikeouts include streaks of seven consecutive batters between the second and the fourth inning and then five consecutive batters to end the game. He did not go an inning without a strikeout and his only blemish was the one walk that Matt Reade battled for in the fifth inning.

The BrewCrew offense did not forget to support Cooke starting with a four run second. The BrewCrew offense was once again lead by Brady Barr and Brandon Eady. Barr added three hits with three runs scored and Eady added two hits and two RBIs. Kenny West also added two hits and three RBIs.

Tomorrow the BrewCrew will face the Green Turtle at 2 pm in the semi-finals at Churchville Rec.

Semi-Final #2: BrewCrew 10, Terrapins 0

April 19, 2015

Following the no-hitter and 17 strikeouts that Steve Cooke delivered in the nightcap Saturday night, the Baltimore BrewCrew played a near flawless game against the Green Turtle Terrapins. They made no errors and the player of the game Mike Devecchio delivered a second straight shutout for the BrewCrew. The Green Turtle managed to get only two runners into scoring position all game long. Devecchio also had 8 strikeouts and was much more economical with the pitch count only reaching 99, which is something that he wanted to work on this season.

Offensively the BrewCrew pounded the baseball. Brandon Eady had two doubles and an RBI, Brian Reno went 2/3 and Kenny West went 3/3 with a double, homerun, and 5 RBIs. In total the BrewCrew had twelve hits. The BrewCrew are next in action at 5 pm against the Chesapeake Dodgers at HCC for the Battle of Baltimore Championship.

Championship: BrewCrew 5, Dodgers 3

April 19, 2015

The Baltimore BrewCrew faced the Chesapeake Dodgers for the championship of the Battle of Baltimore and it was the best game of the tournament. The starting pitchers, Austin Donmoyer for the Dodgers and EJ Nadolny for the BrewCrew had to deal with lineups that had each put up over thirty runs in the first three games of the tournament. So far the Dodgers had scored 42 while allowing 6 runs and the BrewCrew had scored 33 while allowing 6 runs. This was a matchup of the tournaments goliaths.

The BrewCrew took advantage of playing in the second semi-final and jumped up right away. In the top of the first Devecchio reached on a walk and the scored on a Brandon Eady double. Zach Nadolny then singled in Eady to take the 2-0 lead. In the second the hot hitting continued, starting with a Matt Eisner single off the pitcher followed by another Devecchio walk. Eady then knocked in this second run on a hit and then scored on a Barr sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the second E. Nadolny ran into trouble. Matt Quinn reached on a four pitch walk followed by Jermaine Johnson and Brian Hesson singles to load the bases with one out. After an eleven pitch at bat, Tim Gentry singled into right field to score the runner from third but Brandon Eady threw a missle to the plate to throw out incoming Johnson. That was the break Nadolny needed to get through the second with only one run.

The next action came in the top of the fourth. Eisner reached on an error and then Eady, once again in the center of the action, singled to take him to third. Z. Nadolny then hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Eisner and put the BrewCrew up 5-1.

The Dodgers last stand was in the 6th when Jordan Johnson singled to left and then Joe Harbach reached on a HBP. Andre Johnson then singled to cut the lead to 5-3. Starter EJ Nadolny was then pulled finishing with 5.2 innings and 2 er to make way for Kenny West. West got out of the remaining jam and then went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th to preserve the BrewCrew championship.

For the Dodgers Jo. Johnson, Harbach, A. Johnson, Je. Johnson, Hesson, and Gentry all had singles and Chris Brown had a double. Gentry and A. Johnson each had one RBI. The BrewCrew was lead by Brandon Eady who was 3/4 with 2 RBI and a run to raise his tournament batting average to .714. Z. Nadolny was 2/3 with 2 RBIs, Eisner reached base all three times including two singles and scored two runs and Devecchio also scored 2 runs.

BrewCrew Champions, Eady and Cooke Honored

April 19, 2015

The Cy Young award included some othe viable candidates, such as Alex Hangland and Mike Devecchio who each threw complete games in the championship. Or EJ Nadolny who threw 5.2 innings and got the win in the championship game. But Steve Cooke is the Cy Young. Cooke finished with a complete game no hitter in the second pool play game. He also had 17 strikeouts in the outting.

Congratulations to our champions, the Baltimore BrewCrew, and to our MVP- Brandon Eady and our Cy Young- Steve Cooke. We hope to see you all here again next year for another Battle of Baltimore Preseason Tournament.
