The Sidney high school golf team, as well as the entire town of Sidney, is preparing for the big event this weekend — the state golf tournament, hosted by the Sidney Country Club. While the community businesses and members prepare for an influx of golfing guests, the seven individuals who earned their way to state last Friday at the divisional tournament are doing their own preparing. Luckily for them, their practice is just like the real deal, minus some nerves.

“I’m excited for the girls. It’s going to be a good weekend for them. It should be competitive, I think. That’s what I’m looking forward to most,” senior state-qualifier Luke Beenken said.

The girls team will be working to earn the state championship title, coming off of a first-place win at divisionals. Despite the continued success throughout the season, the girls do not overlook this weekend’s opponents.

“I think it will be close this weekend,” Shaelyn Bowlds said.

Kaelyn Volk, who earned fourth place at the divisional tournament, agreed with Bowlds, but also recognized the advantage playing at home gives the team.

“Me too, but we’re at home so we have a better advantage. We should be able to do well,” Kaelyn Volk said.

The Lady Eagles mentioned Whitefish as a powerhouse team coming into the tournament from the western part of the state. Whitefish’s girls team earned first place at the Western A divisional tournament with a score of 372, nine shots under the Sidney girls’ score of 381. Whitefish’s lead golfer, Coral Schulz, earned first with a score of 77 at divisionals and looks to be a top competitor in the girls division.

The tournament begins at the Sidney Country Club on Friday at 9:30 a.m. and will conclude on Saturday afternoon. Fourteen holes will have designated viewing spots, making the tournament a spectator-friendly event.

Gavin Gundlach, left, sinks a putt during the Eastern A Divisional Golf Tournament in Miles City Friday. Gundlach was one of three Cowboys qualifying for state.

The CCDHS golf teams will be sending four athletes to the State Class A Tournament in Sidney Friday.

The Cowboys fell just short of being able to compete as a team at state. They finished third, and only the top two teams travel to Sidney.

For the Cowboys, Deven Doughty, Gavin Gundlach and Nick Anderson will compete at state. Riley Shipp will represent the Cowgirls.

Doughty finished second overall.

“Deven tied for first place but lost in the second-hole playoff to the kids from Billings Central,” said Coach Jon Harris. “He played awesome golf, his best round of the year, so I’m very proud of Deven and all the hard work he’s put into the golf season.”

Doughty, a junior, shot a 73 on the day.

“That just sets him up really good for the state tournament, and I’m looking for him to repeat as a medalist at the state tourney,” Harris said. Doughty was eighth last year, and the top 15 golfers are medalists.

Gundlach finished 12th with an 86, and Anderson was 13th with an 87.

Gabe Gundlach was just out of the top 15 in 17th place with a 94. Derek Schneidt, a freshman, was 24th with a 107.

Billings Central topped the team scores with 318, followed by Laurel with 323. Miles City turned in a 340. Sidney, Glendive and Hardin rounded out the team scoring.

Riley Shipp made it into the top 15, finishing 13th with a 105 on the day. Sydney Anderson just missed the cutoff in 16th place with a 114. The top golfer was Morgan O’Neil of Laurel, who shot an 80.

Miles City finished fifth. Sidney was first with 381 and Laurel was second with 404.

“Riley just continues to improve every week,” Harris said. “She’s played her best golf again for this tournament, so I’m very proud of her accomplishments.”

Shipp, a senior this year, competed at state last year and came close to being a medalist.

“She’ll have to play a little better than divisional to place at state, but she’s very well capable of it,” he said.

Also golfing for the Cowgirls at divisional were Ashlee Helm, 20th, 128; Brenna Christopherson, 21st, 130; and Catie Cavill, 24th, 143.

The CCDHS golfers will leave Thursday to get in a practice round at Sidney, and the tournament is Friday and Saturday.

“Hopefully the weather will hold off for one more week,” Harris said.

“We played well enough for second place and the girls’ team is going to state, but we didn’t shoot our best,” said Coach Ray Croff of Browning’s showing at Central A divisionals last week, adding that Trey Kennerly was the only boy from Browning to qualify.

Browning’s girls scored 416, coming in behind Central A topper Fergus County at 403. They were trailed by Park County at 425, Havre at 430 and Belgrade with no score. Summer Kennerly was first for Browning and second overall at 95, followed by Tiara Gilham in third at 97, Ranessa Skunkcap in 11th at 109, Sarah Harrison in 14th at 115 and Makayla LaBuff at 128.

Browning’s boys came in at the bottom with 460. They were led by Trae Kennerly who claimed 10th and a spot at state with 90. He was followed by Chase Smith at 113, Mark Pollock at 123, Tre’leigh Connelly at 134 and Kevin Gallagher at 170.

This week the Browning golf teams head to Sydney for state competition. They will practice on the links on Thursday, Oct. 1, and play 18 holes each on Friday and Saturday.

Hamilton Bronc golfers off to State

The Hamilton Broncs boys’ team will have a chance to defend their state title in golf this weekend in Sidney. The boys’ team finished second behind Whitefish by one stroke at the Western A Divisional last weekend in Fairmont. Tyge Yelenich of Butte Central won a shoot out over Hamilton’s Josh Heath to take the top honor in the individual scoring. Both shot an 80, but Yelenich won the playoff hole. Max Toenjes of Hamilton shot an 81 to finish third. Also qualifying for state for Hamilton are Blaine Wetzsteon who shot an 89, and Ky Burch with a 97,
Stevensville will have two golfers moving on to state. Zel Frost finished 12th with a 92. Jayce Painter also shot a 92 and will be moving on as well.
The Hamilton girls golf team also qualified for state. They finished fourth behind Whitefish (372), Frenchtown (429), and Dillon (466) with a 482 cumulative score. Sydni Rose was the highest qualifying Hamilton girls’ player. She shot a 95 and finished fifth. Melissa Kimp shot a 104 and was seventh. Liz Roberts finished with a 125 and Haile Spear had a 158 to qualify.

Belgrade golf places 4th at divisional

Baker brothers only Panthers to qualify for state tournament

Posted: Tuesday, September 29, 2015 7:00 am

LEWISTOWN — The Baker brothers will play in the last tournament of the season this weekend. Belgrade’s Elijah and Ian Baker both qualified for the State A golf tournament, which will be held in Sidney on Friday and Saturday at the Sidney Country Club following a practice round on Thursday.

Elijah Baker, who also qualified for state last year, earned all-conference honors by finishing in the top 10. The junior carded an 89 to place ninth. Ian Baker was 13th, carding a 93.

Fergus’ Tyrell Walter fired a 75 to win the tournament. He was followed by Winston and Colton Oppelt of Park County High School. Winston Oppelt fired an 85 and Colton an 86 for second and third place, respectively.

Havre had four golfers finish in the top 10 and all five in the top 15 to win the team championship with a 348. Park was second with a 350, Fergus had 354, while Belgrade had a 381, and Browning a 460.

“Overall, we finished where we thought we would,” said longtime Belgrade coach Joe Rossman. “I was hoping I would have a chance with Autumn (Sharp) but it didn’t work out that way. They did their best.”

Elijah Baker noted his first nine holes helped his score.

“I had a good front nine,” he said. “It really helped me with my score, because my back nine wasn’t the best. So they kind of evened out.”

Elijah Baker added that it was windy on the course, which may have affected some of the scores.

“And the course has a lot of hills so it was a little difficult,” he said. “I’m happy that there’s more than one going to state this year.”

Ian Baker will be making his first trip to the state tournament.

“I’m excited to go,” he said. “I had an average day today. I had a few holes that kind of made the difference. I really like this course.”

Sam Hoffman was one stroke away from earning a trip to state, finishing with a 95. Cameron Jenkins carded a 104 and Brock Salsbury had a 105.

Sharp was one place away from making a trip to the state meet for the girls. The sophomore carded a 123. Kinsey Irvin of Fergus won the meet with an 82.

“I know, one place,” Sharp lamented. “I did alright. I had a few holes that weren’t too good. Then on the last hole I started thinking too much and we kind of went down hill. But, that’s alright, I did my very best today.”

While the Central and Eastern A conferences held separate divisional tournaments, the North and South held a combined divisional. Whitefish swept the boys and girls tournaments, while Billings Central’s boys and Sidney’s girls claimed the Eastern A titles.

Heading into the state tournament, Hamilton is the defending boys champion, while Whitefish is the defending girls champion.

Maroons make long trip to State golf

Updated: October 1, 2015 at 3:20 pm

Four Butte Central golfers are making a nearly 1,000-mile trip to the edge of Montana and back this week for the Class A State golf tournament.

The two-day competition begins at 9 a.m. Friday at the Sidney Country Club.

Seniors Bryan Arnold and Tyler Kump and sophomore Tyge Yelenich will play for the Butte Central boys. Freshman Tricia Joyce will represent the Maroons on the girls’ side.

Senior Sam Joyce also qualified for the tournament at last week’s Western A Divisional tournament at Fairmont Hot Springs. Joyce, though, won’t play this weekend.

Yelenich and Tricia Joyce both won three tournaments on the season. That includes the divisional tournament for Yelenich. He shot an 80 at Fairmont before beating Hamilton’s Josh Heath in the first hole of a sudden-death playoff.

Last year Yelenich finished two shots out of All-State recognition and tied for 19th place after a disappointing second day. The top 15 players are named All-State.

A new individual champion will be crowned because last year’s winner, Anaconda’s Caleb Stetzner, and will play Class B golf with the Copperheads in the spring.

Coral Schulz of Whitefish will be back to defend her girls’ title. Schulz won the Western A Divisional on Saturday. Joyce placed second.

Hamilton’s boys and Whitefish’s girls are the defending team champions. The Maroons don’t have enough players competing to register a team score.

The final 36 holes for HHS golfers

October 1, 2015

Roger Miller

Havre High senior Jeff Miller hits a shot during the 2015 Havre Invitational golf tournament back in August. The Blue Pony boys and girls golf teams are in Sidney this weekend for the Class A state tournament.

For nine Havre Blue Ponies, 36 holes of golf is all that stands between them and the end of the 2015 season. It’s also all that stands between them and individual and team glory.

On Friday and Saturday, the Havre High boys and girls golf teams will play at the Class A state meet, which will be held at the Sidney Country Club, a tree-lined, difficult 18-hole golf course set in the Yellowstone River Valley.

And it’s there that the Havre High boys golf team will attempt to capture its first Class A state championship in more than a decade. And there’s no doubt the Blue Ponies are one of the favorites going in.

“Our boys should be in contention,” said third-year HHS head coach Brett Gilman. “They just have to play to their capabilities.”

If Havre would have qualified as a team a season ago, they would have finished third at the state meet in Hamilton. That rule has since been changed, and now any squad with four players at the state tournament is eligible for a team score. And the Blue Ponies have all four players back from last year’s team. In fact, there’s little doubt Havre has the most experience of any team in the field, considering four of HHS’ five boys in the field this weekend have played in a state tournament every year of their career.

Led by seniors Jerod Boles and Jeff Miller, both playing in their fourth straight state tourney, the Ponies have experience and firepower. Juniors Dustin Haas and Kane Gabrielsen are making their third straight trip to state, and that gives HHS as much experience as any team in Sidney. Individually, any of Havre’s four returning players could also go low at any given time, meaning all four of them have a chance at Class A All-State honors. Junior Aden Passon rounds out Havre’s lineup in Sidney, and while Passon is playing in his first state tournament, he, too, is easily capable of earning all-state accolades, and helping Havre solidify its trophy hunt this weekend.

“This team has a lot of experience,” Gilman said. “They’ve been there at this level before, they know how it works, they know how the pressure feels. And I think they will be able to handle it better than in years past.”

The Ponies do have plenty of talent and plenty of state tournament experience to draw on. But they aren’t the only team in the field that has firepower, and that should make for an interesting state tournament.

Defending champion Hamilton and Eastern A champion Billings Central are both strong teams, and with Havre, are the top three teams to beat. Whitefish and Laurel have also come on strong this season.

Meanwhile, the Blue Pony girls have their sights set on big goals this weekend, too. Havre only finished fourth in the Central A tournament, but the Ponies will still have a team score this weekend, because they qualified four players from the Central A tourney last weekend in Lewistown.

Havre has two experienced seniors in Payton Howard and Randi Gabrielsen, both of whom have played at the state tournament level. The Ponies also have sophomore Grace Litzinger, who played at state a year ago and is coming off the best round of her career last Saturday. Rounding out the HHS girls team is freshman Teagan Fee, who has been improving every week and who will gain loads of experience at this weekend’s tournament — experience she can use going forward.

And that’s the goal for the Ponies, to play their best golf of the season, gain experience and see where they end up when the 36 holes is done.

“The cool thing about the girls is, although they didn’t qualify as a team, we qualified enough girls to have a team score at state,” Gilman said. “They need to just go out and try to shoot the best scores they can and see where they end up. It will be a great experience for all of them.”

On the girls side, the host Sidney Eagles have to be a big favorite this weekend, while defending champion Whitefish and Laurel are teams that could push Sidney as well.

As for past Blue Pony glory, the Havre boys are trying to become the first Pony team since the 2001 and 2002 teams won back-to-back state championships. The Havre girls last claimed the state title in 1991.

But, with golf being an individual and team sport, Gilman said his teams should have one mind-set this weekend, and that’s to each play their best, and see where the scores come in at the end of the tournament.

“Everybody just needs to keep their heads and I think they will do great,” Gilman said. “If you have a rough hole, just move on, keep plugging away at it. That’s what they need to do and they’ll do fine.”

The 2015 Class A state tournament gets underway Friday morning and runs through Saturday at the Sidney Country Club.
