Western A track: Corvallis boys, Whitefish girls take slim leads
FRENCHTOWN -- Not a whole lot separates the teams at the top of the standings after the first day of competition at the Western A track meet Friday at Lyle Bagnell Stadium.
The defending State A champion Corvallis boys lead Columbia Falls 56-54 after seven finals, while Whitefish is third at 30.
The girls' race is even tighter, with Whitefish leading the way with 41 points, followed by Columbia Falls with 40, Hamilton with 39, and Corvallis and Polson with 35 apiece.
Bruce Thomas of Corvallis ran a season-best 50.14 seconds to win the 400 meters, the sixth fastest 400 in the state this season.
Sage Wanner of Columbia Falls also recorded a season best in winning the 1,600 in 4:26.34, the seventh best time in the state at the start of the day.
Corvallis also received a win from Braxton Roth, who took the long jump at 20 feet, 9.75 inches.
Polson's Jacob Clairmont won the pole vault at 13-6, but that's off his season best of 15-0.
Butte Central's Rachael McGree won both the 100 hurdles and the long jump. She clocked 14.75 in the hurdles, the best mark in the state behind only her own time of 14.61 set just last week.
She won the long jump at 17-6, a half-inch behind her season best.
Whitefish received a win from Lydia Kryshak, who clocked 1:00.54 in the 400.
Columbia Falls scored three wins -- Ashley Caffrey won the pole vault at 10-0, Allyson Gimbel took the shot put at 38-8.5, and the 400 relay clocked in at 50.96.
The meet continues Saturday with the top 10 individual placers and top five relay teams advancing to next week's State A meet in Bozeman.

FRECHTOWN — Butte Central’s Rachael McGree continued her remarkable junior season with a pair of divisional championships.
McGree ran to victory in the 100-meter hurdles and jumped to a win in the long jump Friday on the first day of the Western A Divisional tournament.
McGree finished the hurdles in 14.75 seconds. That’s not far off her season and best 14.61, which is the best time in Montana this spring.
She jumped 17 feet, 6 inches to win the long jump by more than 13 inches. McGree’s mark was a half inch off her personal best, which is also a Class A best.
McGree also ran a leg on Butte Central’s third place 400-meter relay team, which finished in 51.46. Whitney, Lindsay and Lacey McGree also ran a leg on the relay.
Lindsay McGree, a freshman, placed fourth in the long jump in 15-10.5. Whitney McGree, a senior, placed fifth in the 400 in 1:02.71.
The Maroons scored 32 points and sit in sixth place. Whitefish leads with 41, followed by Columbia Falls at 40, Hamilton at 39, and Corvallis and Polson at 35.
On the boys’ side, the Maroons scored just eight points, but they have some big events on Saturday. Corvallis leads the way at 56, followed by Columbia Falls at 54. Whitefish is a distant third at 30.
The Maroons placed second in the 400-meter relay in 43.97. Cole Harper, Blake Burton, Kyle Harrington and Nate McGree run the 400 for the Maroons.
Nate McGree is a favorite in the triple jump on Saturday, while Kyle Schulte is a top competitor in the discus and Blake Burton and Harrington will compete for a top spot in the 100.
Saturday’s action begins at noon.
