Defending champion Blue Devils sweep crowns
FRENCHTOWN -- The defending State A champions will not go away quietly.
Corvallis swept the team titles Saturday as the Western A Divisional track and field meet concluded at Lyle Bagnell Stadium.
The Blue Devil boys took the narrowest of wins, 124-123 over Columbia Falls. Dillon was a distant third with 74.
Behind five Day 2 wins, the Corvallis girls won going away with 112 points. Bitterroot Valley rival Hamilton was second at 87 and first-day leader Whitefish was third at 85.
Penny Jessop was a part of three wins for the Corvallis girls. She took the 100 meters in 13.04 seconds, the 200 in 26.51 and ran a leg on the 1,600 relay team that stopped the clock in 4:12.14.
Blue Devil Brookelyn Palin improved on her season best by winning the discus with a toss of 132 feet, 8 inches. That's the second best mark in the state this spring.
Hamilton picked up three wins on the girls' side. Jacie Schmalz won the 3,200 in 11:54.56, Kacia Guisinger took the high jump at 5-4, and Baylie Duce won the triple jump at 34-11.
Josh Jessop of Corvallis had one of the better marks on the boys' side, winning the 800 in 1:58.50, the sixth swiftest time in the state. Corvallis also received wins from Braxton Roth (triple jump) and Skylar Jessop (discus).
Columbia Falls improved on its season best in the 1,600 relay, clocking 3:28.71, the seventh fastest in the state this season.
Polson's Jacob Clairmont added to his gold in the pole vault from Friday by winning the 300 hurdles in 40.09. Sage Wanner of Columbia Falls completed the distance double by winning the 3,200 in 9:54.91.
Dillon's Troy Andersen swept the 100 (11.23) and 200 (22.63).
The top 10 placers and top five relay teams advanced to the State A meet to be held in Bozeman beginning Friday.
