Welling Hits Walk-Off Bomb, Taylor Throw Shutout

Well... the walk-off bomb was not as dramatic as it seems. Ryan Welling's second homerun of the game over the left field wall was not only a grand slam, but enough to slaughter rule the Blue Sox. Welling had six RBIs on the game.

Through the first few innings this game looked to be a pitcher's duel. Ryan Taylor made his debut on the mound for the BrewCrew and did not disappoint. The left-hander threw his way to a six-hit shutout in one of the most impressive BrewCrew debuts to date. He totaled 10 strikeouts over his six innings and would have been the star if Welling did not breakout with his two homeruns.

The scoring started when Dre Jones lead off the third with a triple. He scored on a Kenny West sacrifice fly. Then Brandon Eady walked and Connor Goodie singled followed by sacrifice flies from Joey Schwartz and Jones to score the runs.

Welling then hit a two run homer in the fifth and a grandslam in the sixth to reach 10-0 Brews. Jones went 3/3 with two runs and an RBI. Connor Goodie and Matt Henigan each added two hits and a run scored.

BrewCrew Fall to Hagerstown, Clinch 2nd Seed in Semis

With Hagerstown and the BrewCrew in the semi-finals, this game was for seeding. EJ Nadolny took the ball for the BrewCrew. The first two innings went swimmingly for him. In the top of the third, Dre Jones reached on a single, Kenny West reached on an error and then Ryan Welling belted his third homerun of the day with a three run shot to center. This was the extent of the BrewCrew scoring.

Hagerstown put a two out rally together with back to back hits to score their first run. Then in the fourth things unraveled for the Crew. Lead off hitter reached on an error and after a ground out a double scored the next run. It was followed up with a single to tie it. A two out single took the lead 4-3.

The BrewCrew mounted a rally in the sixth with back to back hits by Jones and West but Zach Nadolny grounded out hard to third. Hagerstown added a run in the 6th on two errors. EJ Nadolny finished with a complete game and two earned runs. Welling went 1/4 with a homerun and three RBIs while Jones, Z. Nadolny, and Connor Goodie added two hits.

The BrewCrew will take on Brunswick in a crossover game before playing them in the semi-finals at 4 at Williamsport High School.

Brunswick Defeats BrewCrew in Seed Game

Brooks Rothschild took the ball for his second start of the year to face rival Brunswick Orioles once again in the Reno Powell Invitational. The scoring got started in the third inning when Brunswick scored on a sac fly. The BrewCrew responded in the fourth.

Matt Gabrielski and Zach Nadolny reached on walks to start the inning. Ryan Welling singled to load the bases. Brandon Eady singled to right center to tie the game. Nadolny then scored on wild pitch to take the lead. Brunswick came back in the fifth with two runs to take the lead back. The BrewCrew tied it in the sixth with a ground out by Andy Welling to score Matt Henigan who pinch ran for Ben Henry after his lead off single.

Brunswick had a long sixth inning. They reached in all forms, singles walks and errors. When the dust settled, they scored six runs to win the game. Rothschild finished with 5 innings, 5 earned, and two strikeouts. Matt Gabrielski reached on all four plate appearances, three walks and a single. Brandon Eady added two hits, a stolen base and RBI.

BrewCrew Fall in Semis of Reno Powell

The BrewCrew found themselves in a familiar position in this game, in an elimination game against the Brunswick Orioles. Since 2014, Brunswick and Baltimore have squared off four times in semi-final or championship games, with the Orioles leading the match-ups 3-1. This game would make it 4-1.

Nothing went right for the BrewCrew in this game. The leadoff batter was picked off to spoil a rally before it had the chance to start. Then the Orioles scored a run off Steve Cooke off an error. And scored another run in the second off another error. The BrewCrew rebounded when Zach Nadolny hit his first homerun of the season. But the Orioles answered with two in the fourth and another four in the fifth.

One of the few bright spots was Matt Henigan who threw a scoreless sixth inning. Zach Nadolny had two of the BrewCrew's three hits. The other was off Ryan Welling's bat.

This was by far the BrewCrew's worst showing in a Reno Powell Invitational, finishing 1-3 in the tournament. They played uncharacteristically poor defense. THey never had any momentum following the win in game one. The BrewCrew look forward to playing the MD Monsters next weekend in league play.
