GYB All-Star Team

Selection Process

Selection Policy and Basic Overview

As a league, Gainesville Youth Baseball strives to make sure that the regular season offers as much opportunity to play and experience baseball as possible. The League implements numerous local rules to make for a more enjoyable playing experience for ALL players. Our League has many different playing levels, each geared to accommodate players based on their age and ability of play.

The All-Star Season is a completely separate season from the regular season. It is an opportunity for a significantly higher level of play within the regional Babe Ruth system. Players will have a significantly higher level of commitment and will receive higher level instruction and compete against other All-Star teams.

When it comes to All-Star teams, it is the intent of the Gainesville Youth Baseball Board to field a team that will best represent our league in competition and character.

All selection decisions regarding All-Star teams need to be made with these Board ideals in mind. Several characteristics permeate our selection process for players and managers for the All-Star teams:

- Skill-level and ability to compete

- Attitude, hustle, team spirit, team leadership, and

- Overall character, integrity, and sportsmanship.

Winning is fun, but it is very important that we remember that youth baseball is a Child Development Program and that we are about teaching life lessons, building and demonstrating the positive ideals and characteristics that we hope for all our children.

General Selection Process and Procedure

Player and Parent Commitments:

Each player invited to All-Star tryouts by their coach and is interested in playing must complete the All-Star Commitment Form. This document explains the commitment necessary to be a part of the All-Star program. GYB is striving to field the most competitive All-Star teams possible and assure that it is comprised of players, parents and managers/coaches that represent the attitude and character we desire. With this in mind, GYB wishes to involve only parents and players who are committed to the hard work and practice time that are required to participate at this level of competition.

The player and parent commitment to All-Stars must be a solid commitment. All-Star players must bear in mind that their first commitment is to the GYB team before any other Non-Babe Ruth team or to any other sports camps or sports teams during the All-Star Season.

Number of Players:

Each All-Star team representing GYB will consist of 12 to 13 players. In GYB the All-Star Manager has the discretion of choosing a 13th player which is eligible for the team. Additionally, the GYB Board shall appoint a new player should the team need to replace a player due to injury, lack of commitment, ineligibility, or other unforeseen circumstance. Per Babe Ruth rules, some players may be eligible for multiple teams however; an individual may only be selected or be allowed to practice with one All-Star team.

All-Star Player Selection Process

The process for selecting All-Star teams will involve several steps.

  1. Coach Invite: Each head coach will select players he believes are All-Star worthy. These players/parents must read the All Star Player Commitment Document and then fill out an All-Star Commitment Form in order to be considered for a team.

  1. Tryout: Each age level will hold a tryout. Most evaluations will be done during league games, however the tryout will allow coaches one more opportunity to see the players.

    1. T-ball: Monday 4/30 (5:45-6:45)

    2. Rookie: Friday 4/27 (6pm-8pm)

    3. Minors: Monday 4/30 (6pm-8pm)

    4. Majors: Monday 4/30 (7pm-8pm

  1. Player Selection:

    1. The head coach of each A team will pick 6 players to start their roster.

    2. The final 6 roster spots will be determined by a vote of the head coaches in the league. Coaches will vote by confidential ballot, one player slot at a time, until the team reaches 12 players.

    3. The 13th player is chosen by the All-Star manager if they desire.

    4. The GYB board shall make the final decision to accept the manager recommended roster or to resolve any other issue or conflict.

  1. The creation of the “B” teams will only commence once the “A” teams have completed rosters.

Final Thoughts

The goal of the All-Star season is to create the most competitive teams possible. Players and coaches should have no expectations of playing with certain coaches or players. Efforts are made in season to accommodate these requests but will not be considered during the All-Star season if if impacts the quality of play on the field.
