South East High School built a 41-0 lead by halftime. It almost wasn’t enough.

The Jaguars withstood a 37-point second half by Roosevelt to come away with a 56-37 victory last Friday in the Eastern League football game.

Quarterback Luis Barraza threw three touchdown passes for South East, which improved to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in league. Roosevelt is also 4-2 and 1-1.

The Jaguars are at Bell (0-5, 0-2) and Roosevelt is at Jordan (3-3, 2-0) in Friday’s games.

Senen Carson and Bryan Munoz each scored three TDs and Julio Segura added one for South East.

Although they wound up winning by 19 points, the Jaguars had to sweat out an offensive explosion over the final two quarters by the Rough Riders.

Junior quarterback Jesse Diaz had a huge second half and finished with 369 yards and four TDs on 25-for-32 passing. He was intercepted four times.

Manny Ayon, with 10 catches for 125 yards and a TD, and Joel Jimenez, with five for 90 and a score, were his favorite targets. Art Hernandez (four for 91) and Gus Cuevas also caught scoring passes.

Jonathan Torres rushed for 91 yards on 20 carries to lead the Rider ground attack.

South East did have some defensive standouts.

Linebacker David Aguilar had 11 tackles and returned an interception 50 yards. Munoz had seven tackles and two interceptions (returned for 83 yards).
