Paced by Kenneth Medwood’s first-place finish in the 400 intermediate hurdles, the East L.A. College men’s track and field team placed eighth at the California Community College track and field championships Saturday at Cerritos College.

Medwood, a Roosevelt High School graduate, repeated as state champion in his specialty with a 51.63 clocking that was more than a second faster than runnerup Samuel Jeter (52.80) of Riverside.

Medwood, one of six ELAC athletes to place in an event, also ran the first leg of the 4x400 relay team that finished fifth in 3 minutes, 13.06 seconds.

In the field events, freshman Gyasi Rivers (Hollywood High) placed third in the triple jump with a mark of 50-2 and anchored the 4x400 relay team.

Sprinter Conroy Black was fourth in the 100 (10.47) and fifth in the 200 (21.54). The freshman from Everglades High School in Miramar, Fla., also ran the third leg of the 4x400 relay team.

Anthony Reese was fifth in the 800 (1:54.68) and ran the second leg of the 4x400 relay. He is a sophomore from Granite Bay High School in Granite Bay.

Kevin Martinez, a Franklin High grad, placed sixth in the 400 intermediate hurdles (54.30).
