The drought has ended for the East L.A. College football program.

A 22-game losing streak that included 15 consecutive home losses is no more after the Huskies defeated Santa Monica, 42-37 last Saturday in an American Pacific Conference game.

With sophomore Antoine Smithson providing many of the big plays, including a 67-yard touchdown pass to Delane Woods with 2:04 left to break a 35-35 tie, ELAC was able to hand first-year coach Lynn Cain his initial victory.

The Huskies take marks of 1-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference into Saturday’s 1 p.m. contest at West L.A (3-5, 2-3). The Oilers lost to Santa Barbara, 28-21 last Saturday.

Thanks to Smithson, a Maryland native, ELAC has the weight of a losing streak off its back.

He rushed for a team-high 75 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries, caught a team-best seven passes for 50 yards and completed both his passes for 127 yards and two scores.

His 15-yard run got the Huskies a 6-0 lead in the first five minutes and before the quarter ended, he threw a 60-yard scoring pass to Delane Woods for a 20-0 advantage. Between those two scores was a seven-yard touchdown run by Manny Rodriguez.

A one-yard run by quarterback Pedro Velasquez and a 40-yard interception return by Carlos Perez increased ELAC’s lead to 35-13.

Santa Monica (1-7, 1-4) rallied to tie the score, 35-35 before Smithson connected with Woods. Santa Monica was hit with a safety with five seconds left to account for the final margin.

Woods had a big night catching the ball, hauling in three for 129 yards.

Fullback Steven Torres had a 36-yard run on his only carry of the game. Torres was a standout on defense with three solo tackles, six assists, 1.5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery.

A note on Smithson: He is the team’s number one receiver with 52 catches for 727 yards and three TDs, the number one punt returner with three for 41 yards and the number one kickoff returner with 13 for 254 yards.

He is second in rushing with 217 yards and two TDs on 55 carries and second in passing yardage with 193 on just three completions, all for touchdowns.
