great-grandmother


Juanita Doris Oglesby Phillips Robinson was born April
3,1917 in Boyle Heights, CA. Juanita was the fifth of
10 children born to Arthur Sr. and Queen Esther
Oglesby. At an early age, Juanita loved to do hair and
make others beautiful. Juanita graduated from
Jefferson High School in 1935.Afterward she began
attending Henrietta’s Beauty School, where she
graduated in 1940. In July 1935, she married Herman
Phillips of Texas, who preceded her in death. To this
union two children Geraldine Eleanor and Patricia
Elaine Phillips were born. During World War II,
Juanita did her “bit’’ at Vultee Aircraft Corp. In
1948 resumed her cosmetology career at Cinderella’s
Beauty Shop. In November 1948, she married Laurice
Robinson, who also preceded her in death. In 1953, she
became a founding member of Miracle Missionary Baptist
Church, pastored by the late Lawrence Felix, Sr.
Juanita was also the first person baptized in that
church. In the 1960’s she won the “Beautician
Of The Year” Award three years in a row. She was also
active in various PTA organizations and the
Beauticians Of Los Angeles Association. In 1994,
Juanita received the “Grandparent Of The Year.” Award
from Miracle Missionary Baptist Church. Juanita Doris
Oglesby Phillips-Robinson died December 17, 2008 in
Los Angeles,CA. Juanita leaves two children, eight
grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, three
great-great grandchildren and a host of nieces and
nephews to cherish her memory. "Love is the most
