Roosevelt rolling in right direction now

Roosevelt High School’s baseball team seems to have put a midseason slump in its rear-view mirror.

A 9-1 nonleague victory over Almont League power Alhambra Saturday and Monday’s 4-1 Eastern League victory at South East are signs the Rough Riders are headed in the right direction.

“We played really well against Alhambra and that carried over a bit to Monday,” Roosevelt coach Scott Pearson said. “We’re starting to get back to where we were (before the three-game losing streak). We’ll be okay.”

At 11-4 overall and 3-4 in league, the Rough Riders are chasing co-leaders Bell and Garfield (both 5-2), as well as South East (4-3) in the Eastern League standings.

They get a chance to get even with South East Thursday when they host the Jaguars at Roybal Learning Center, which serves as their home field in 2009.

“We’re two games back, so we’re going to have to run the table and hope the other teams beat up on each other,” Pearson said. “This is a real balanced league. I said at the beginning, four losses might win the league, and I still believe it.”

Against South East, Alvin Herrera (3-1) struck out four and walked three in a complete-game 4-hitter. The run was unearned.

“He didn’t have his best stuff, but kept the hitters off balance with his curve and changeup,” Pearson said.

Eddie Almeda had an RBI-single in the first inning and a triple in the fourth to lead the Roosevelt’s 8-hit attack.

Following his triple, Almeda got caught in a rundown on a botched squeeze. He made it safely back to the bag on a close play, leading to the South East players getting involved in an argument with the base umpire. An alert Almeda, noticing the plate was uncovered, raced home with the run.

In the sixth, Leonard Baez singled, was sacrificed to second and scored on a base hit by Rafael Arcos.

Jonathan Alatriste’s home run in the top of the seventh completed the scoring.

Roosevelt opens play in the RBI Tournament Saturday against North Hollywood at Santee. Monday, the Riders take on Chaminade Prep at Santee in the tourney.

Enrique Ortiz pitched a complete-game 6-hitter with seven strikeouts and hit a 3-run home run to lead Huntington Park to a 4-3 victory over Jordan Monday in an Eastern League game. The homer was in the third inning.

Ricardo Lopez went 2-for-3 with a double for the Spartans, who improved to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in league. Jordan is 5-5, 2-4.

Garfield (8-6 overall) caught Bell (7-5) in the standings by defeating the Eagles, 8-6 Monday.
