ELAC offense wins the numbers game

Pedro Velasquez, Anthony Denham and Steven Torres all accumulated eye-popping numbers Saturday to send the East L.A. College football team out a winner in the final game of 2009.

When freshman running Isam Pegues (Lynwood High School) scored on a four-yard run on the third play of overtime, the Huskies were able to edge host Santa Barbara, 52-46 and finish the season 5-5 overall and 5-2 in the American Division Pacific Conference.

Velasquez, sensational all during ELAC’s surge in the second half of the season, completed 35 of 57 passes for 587 yards and five touchdowns. His 52-yard scoring pass to Denham with 6:18 left in regulation cut the Santa Barbara lead to 46-43. Eric McHenry’s 36-yard field goal with 57 seconds left sent the game into overtime.

Denham, a freshman from L.A. Wilson, caught 12 passes for 310 yards and four TDs (40, 69 and 57 yards were the others).

David Cater had a big night as well with nine catches for 111 yards.

Torres was involved in 19 tackles, seven of them solos, against Santa Barbara. The Garfield product had one tackle for loss.

Here are some of the final numbers for the Huskies.

Velasquez, a sophomore, completed 228 of 378 passes for 3,297 yards and 25 TDs.

Denham caught 49 passes for 1,189 yards (24.3 average) and 16 TDs.

Jorge Valdovinos, a sophomore from Huntington Park, caught 59 for 641 yards and two scores.

Cater caught 44 for 433 yards and two TDs.

Torres led the Huskies with 48 solo and 91 total tackles. He also led them with 12.5 tackles for loss and six passes broken up. He also had an interception he returned 30 yards.

Carlos Perez was second with 37 solos and 67 total tackles.
