ALHAMBRA - Alhambra High School kicker Jonathon Bird's 30-yard field-goal attempt fell short as time expired and Roosevelt defeated the Moors 16-13 Friday night at Moor Field in the opening game of the season for both teams.

The lead exchanged hands three times in the fourth quarter before the visiting Rough Riders claimed it for good.

"We came into this game young and youth was served. We made a lot of mistakes," Alhambra coach Lou Torres said after completing his first game as head coach after 25 years at the school and two decades as an assistant under the recently retired Gil Ruedaflores.

Roosevelt's Ricardo Estrada ran a sweep around the left side of the Alhambra defense for a 16-yard touchdown with 1:38 left to go make it 16-13. The Moors then drove from their own 15-yard line to the Rough Rider 13-yard line with 5.5 seconds left before the potential game-tying kick failed.

"We had been running to the right side all game. We just waited for the right moment to take it around the left," Roosevelt coach Javier Cid said of the play that put his team up for good.

The Moors took a 7-3 lead into the fourth quarter by way of a Patrick Bruno 1-yard touchdown run on fourth down late in the third quarter.

Roosevelt took the lead back on the first series of the fourth quarter when Elgin Rosales ran 36 yards for a touchdown. The Moors answered immediately. George Vasquez scored on a 1-yard run making it 13-9.

Alhambra defense was strong all game. In the first half it limited the Rough Riders to 15 yards. The Moors stiffened again to stuff Roosevelt at the 2 on fourth and goal in the series following Vasquez's score.

However, the Moors were forced to punt from their own end zone, giving Roosevelt a short field for its final scoring drive.

The Rough Riders took over at the Moor 30. Alhambra defensive lineman Chris Salgado drove them back 15 more by tackling a Rough Rider for an 11-yard loss on a broken play and then sacking quarterback Andony Flores on third down for a four-yard loss.

Roosevelt's Oscar Cibrian then converted the fourth-and-20 play by catching a 25-yard pass from Flores to set up Estrada's touchdown run on the next play.

Both teams played quarterbacks who were new to starting at the variety level. It showed as both teams failed to score in the first half.
