Eastside Prep Football Teams Eliminated From Playoffs

The football season has come to an end for Eastside high schools.

Four teams were eliminated in the playoffs last Friday. Garfield and Franklin were defeated in the City Section, while Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary and Schurr fell in the Southern Section.

Top-seeded Carson had to overcome a 6-3 halftime deficit to beat No. 8 Garfield, 29-13, in a City Section Division I quarterfinal.

Carson quarterback Justin Alo rallied his team back in the third quarter with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Darreus Rogers. Alo scored on a sneak early in the fourth quarter to increase the Colts’ lead to 15-6.

But the Bulldogs, who had seven straight wins, wouldn’t go away. They put together a drive that ended with Hector Cazales scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 15-13 with 7:10 remaining.

Carson responded by marching down the field for another score to increase its advantage to 22-13. The Colts put it away with another score and are on their way to the semifinals to face No. 5 Taft, which defeated Dorsey, 34-18.

Garfield’s defense set up the Bulldogs’ first score of the game, recovering a fumble at the Carson 28-yard line early in the game. It led to quarterback Leonardo Vaal throwing a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jaime Leija.

Vaal completed seven of 12 passes for 121 yards and rushed for 26 yards on eight attempts to account for most of Garfield’s offense. The Bulldogs’ rushing attack struggled to produce yardage. Geovanni Leon gained 27 yards on six carries, Danny Vargas carried seven times for 26 yards and Lance Fernandez added 23 yards on seven attempts.

With the loss, Garfield finished the season 7-5. Carson, which has won a record 11 City titles, is 10-2.

Division II
Arleta got the best of Franklin, again, scoring a 32-14 City Division II victory against the Panthers at Monroe High School. The game was a rematch of the 2008 Division II final between the schools.

Arleta’s Josh Robles rushed for 191 yards and scored three touchdowns on 20 carries to lead the fourth-seeded Mustangs (11-1).

Trailing 24-7, Franklin (8-4) got a two-yard touchdown run from Enrique Macias in the third quarter to get closer. But Robles scored his third touchdown of the game to help his team pull away.

Arleta advances to play No. 9 Fairfax (8-3) in a semifinal.

CIF Southern Section
Usually 286 yards of total offense leads to more than seven points, but that was not the case for Schurr High School, as the Spartans were defeated by Monrovia, 21-7, and eliminated from the Mid-Valley Division playoffs.

Quarterback Aaron Cantu accounted for most of the yardage passing for 242 yards by completing 26 of 39 passes. A three-yard touchdown pass to Chris Chiaromonte late in the game were the only points the Spartans could muster.

Cantu had another stellar season, as the senior passed for 2,822 yards, 21 touchdowns. He completed 217 of 341 passes and had 10 interceptions.

Abraham Gonzalez also had a good night for Schurr with 44 yards on nine rushing attempts and five receptions for 43 yards. Chiaromonte caught six passes for 42 yards.

Monrovia (10-2), the No. 2 seed, advances to play San Dimas (8-4) in the semifinals.
Schurr, winners of eight consecutive Almont League titles, ended the year 7-5.

Lompoc 41, Cantwell Sacred Heart 7: The Cardinals had a long bus ride to Santa Barbara County and had an even longer ride home as they were no match for Lompoc in a Northwest Division second round game.

The Los Padres League champion Braves racked up 307 rushing yards to end the Cardinals season at 10-2. They scored the first three times they had the ball and led 21-0.

Fullback James Becerra scored Cantwell’s only touchdown on a 1-yard scoring run in the third quarter. A 58-yard run by Jonathan Mesa set it up. The Cardinals were held to 228 yards of total offense.

Lompoc (9-3) plays top-seeded Nordhoff (12-0) in the semifinals.
