Romero late addition to AL All-Stars

CLEVELAND -- It turns out Ricky Romero is an All-Star after all.

During the ninth inning of Sunday's 7-1 win over the Indians, Romero received word that he was named to the team in place of Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez, who pitched on Sunday and will not head to Arizona for the All-Star Game.

"They let me know in the ninth inning, kind of waited till the end," Romero said. "I'm at a loss for words. It's very exciting. My family is excited."

And Romero's family will join him for the festivities, all except one sister who didn't have enough faith in her brother.

"One of my sisters, she didn't think I was going to make it, so she took a trip to Europe," Romero said. "It was already planned before, so she kind of saw I didn't make the first cut. She was like, 'All right, I guess I'll just go.' "

Now, she will miss seeing her brother's All-Star debut.

"I'm especially excited to be representing East Los Angeles and representing Canada," Romero said. "I'm excited, and I'm looking forward to it."

Toronto manager John Farrell, who will join Romero in Phoenix for the All-Star Game, said Romero was deserving of the honour.

"It's a great accomplishment for him," Farrell said. "Obviously, being named to the All-Star team speaks volumes in and of itself. It's just an acknowledgment of a very solid first half for him."

Romero is 7-8 with a 3.09 ERA and 101 strikeouts in 122 1/3 innings of work over 18 starts.

Romero and Farrell will be joined on the AL squad by Blue Jays slugger and MLB home run leader Jose Bautista.
