Shaky Smithson, East L.A. College alum, signs with Packers

Shaky Smithson, a product of East L.A. College and the University of Utah, has signed as an undrafted free agent with the Green Bay Packers, the club has announced.


Listed as a wide receiver, he likely will be tried as a kick returner.

At Utah, he started only four games on offense and caught 25 passes for 383 yards as a senior. However, Smithson’s 19.1 yards per punt return and four 100-yard punt return games led the nation. He also had two punts for TDs to earn second-team All-Mountain West Conference honors.

During his pre-draft pro day with the Packers, Smithson ran the 40-yard dash in 4.65 seconds, the 20 in 2.71 and the 10 in 1.65. He also put up 10 reps at 225 pounds and had a vertical leap of 30.5 inches.

Second-round pick Randall Cobb figures to be his main competition as a kick returner. Cobb played receiver and returned kicks at Kentucky.

A Maryland native, Smithson did a bit of everything while playing at East L.A.

Ute senior named a first-team All-American

Utah's Shaky Smithson, who leads the nation in punt return yards with 572, has been named a first-team All-American by Scout/Foxsports.com. Smithson set the Mountain West Conference record for punt return yards in a season while also becoming the first Ute ever to surpass 500 yards in punt returns in a season.

The senior is averaging 19.72 yards per return and his four 100-yard punt return games leads the NCAA. He also has four of the top 11 punt return yardage games in the nation this season, with 145 vs. Iowa State (2nd), 140 vs. New Mexico (3rd), 128 vs. UNLV (5th-tie) and 111 vs. Wyoming (11th), and is the only player with three 70-yard punt returns.

A three-time Mountain West Conference Player of the Week, Smithson also returns kicks and plays receiver for the Utes.
