Amat starts slow in 14-0 win

LA PUENTE - Bishop Amat High School picked up right where it left off last season and opened 2011 with a 14-0 win over visiting Garfield on Friday night.
The Lancers struggled early, but clinched the game with an 8-play, 68-yard drive capped off by a Zachary Shay 1-yard touchdown run with 2:16 to play in the fourth.

"I think first games we're notoriously slow starters," Bishop Amat coach Steve Hagerty said. "But, we get to see live action and we get to start to go back to work and correct things.

"I like some of the things I saw and some others things need to be fixed in a hurry."

The Lancers' slow start to the game might of had to do with quarterback Rio Ruiz not getting to start. Sophomore Koa Haynes got the start at quarterback and was replaced after two drives by Ruiz with 8:46 to play in the second quarter. Ruiz will miss time during the nonleague schedule to play baseball for the U.S. Under-18 national team in the COPABE Pan American games in Colombia.

"We're just getting guys work right now and just trying to figure out who we are as a team so it's nothing more than that," Hagerty said of Haynes getting the start.

Garfield's ball-control offense limited the Lancers to seven offensive possessions. The Bulldogs (0-1) grinded out 148 yards on the ground led by 99 yards from Lance Fernandez.

"They controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the night and pushed their way up front and those are things we have to


figure out how to do," Hagerty said. "We were fortunate to get a win."
Garfield's best scoring chance was early in the second quarter. The Bulldogs drove to the Lancers' 7-yard line, but Fernandez was stopped on a fourth-and-one run.

Bishop Amat senior running back Jalen Moore plunged into the endzone from 1 yard out on Ruiz's second possession to give the Lancers a 7-0 lead with 2:02 to play in the half. Moore finished the game with 102 rushing yards on 13 carries.

Bishop Amat had two touchdowns called back on penalties during their first drive of the second half. The Lancers had to eventually settle for a 40-yard field goal attempt, but did not attempt the kick after the holder failed to control the snap. The Lancers did not get the ball back again until their final drive with 5:56 to play in the fourth.

Ruiz opened the drive with a 25-yard completion to junior tight end Anthony Carrillo. On third and goal from the 1-yard line, Shay scored on a run up the middle to close the scoring. Shay returned from an injury that sidelined him for the final four games last year.

"We're glad to have him back. He's a great player and he'll be a big part of our success this year," Hagerty said.

Ruiz finished the game 10-of-13 passing for 90 yards.

"I think we were physical today," Ruiz said. "We didn't have calls go our way, but we bounced back from that and we put a couple of points on the board."

The Lancers now will face Pac-5 powerhouse Servite in a marquee matchup next Friday at Cerritos College.

"I can't wait. We'll just see what happens," Ruiz said. "It's going to be a dogfight for four quarters."
