Corsairs win double overtime thriller

East Los Angeles (ELAC) running back Marquel Booker was racing, looking to score, only to be tackled in the backfield for a loss.

That was the scene on fourth down and Santa Monica College held on to a six-point lead in double overtime to beat ELAC 26-20.

The Huskies completed two straight passes and had a first down run that set them up with first and goal from the 10-yard line. ELAC made it to the three-yard line but were called back on a crucial holding penalty, pushing them back to the eight-yard line.

This would set up the final play and the Corsairs’ most important stop – thwarting Booker in the backfield.

Before the final play of the game, defensive coordinator Steven Garcia pressed his team that someone had to make a play. The defense responded with a key stop on fourth down to seal the victory.

Despite the Corsairs committing 10 penalties for 90 yards and kicker Trevor Dionne missing two field goals in the last two minutes, SMC was able to hold off ELAC to improve 2-0.

ELAC quarterback Mike Oliver connected with wide receiver Chris Clark on a late 49-yard touchdown pass right before the half sending the Corsairs to the locker room trailing 7-3.

Oliver and Clark would connect later in the game.

Garcia knew his defense was not playing up to its potential, as it allowed 220 yards of total offense in the first half.

“Garcia is a taskmaster,” head coach Gifford Lindheim said. “He won’t be happy until after the game, where he can reflect on the performance.”

In the second half, the Corsairs’ offense got the ball rolling and they were able to score on a six-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Alfonso Medina to wide receiver Aaron Jones.

Medina would finish the game with 152 yards passing and one touchdown, completing 12 of his 24 passes, with one interception.

The defense allowed another long pass for a touchdown, this time on a 56-yard bomb from Oliver to Clark that gave ELAC the lead 13-10.

Clark would finish the game with four receptions for 129 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

ELAC missed the extra point, which led the game into overtime.

On the next possession, Dionne tied the game at 13 on a 40-yard field goal. Neither team would score in the final minutes.

ELAC had the first possession in overtime and scored on an eight-yard pass from Oliver to Lanny Delgado. Oliver would finish the game with 218 yards passing, going 17 for 38, and three touchdowns.

SMC would respond with a one-yard touchdown run by Daniel Pipkin.

In the second overtime, SMC scored on their first play when running back Myles Johnson broke a 25-yard run to give SMC the lead.

The extra point was blocked leaving SMC with a six-point lead to win the game.
