Sole possession of first place in the Mountain Conference football standings will be at stake Saturday in Victorville, when East L.A. College takes on Victor Valley. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.



With three weeks left in the season, the Huskies (4-3 overall) and Jackrabbits (3-4) are both 2-0 and tied for first place in the conference race.

ELAC has notched conference victories against Mt. San Jacinto (31-13) and San Diego Mesa (21-6), while Victor Valley has defeated Mesa (40-17) and Compton (41-13).

Last Saturday, the Huskies raced out to a 24-0 lead in the first half and went on to defeat Mt. San Jacinto, 31-13 for their third consecutive win. The three-game winning streak is ELAC’s longest since 2009.

The Huskies amassed 538 yards of total offense and 27 first downs to Mt. San Jacinto’s 347 yards and 14 first downs. ELAC dominated time of possession, holding the ball for 41 minutes 27 seconds.

Running back Preston Oliver went over the 100-yard rushing mark for the second consecutive week, with 135 yards on 20 carries. The freshman from Marshall High School scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter to end ELAC’s first scoring drive.

The Huskies, who racked up 221 yards on the ground, were also led by Justin Forte with 76 yards on 16 attempts. Wide receiver Carlos Portillo had a 44-yard gain on an end around and Louis Oneal added 17 yards on three carries.

Paving the way up front were tackles Ramon Barraza (Roosevelt) and Carlos Lozano (Montebello), guards Caesar Aguila (Garfield) and Jamal Tucrkile (Lynwood) and center Alberto Perez (Schurr).

Quarterback Aaron Cantu (Schurr) also had another big night passing with 317 yards and three touchdowns. The freshman completed 24 of 33 attempts with no interceptions.

Luther Walker caught a team-leading six passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns. Midway through the second quarter with the Huskies facing third-and-14 at their own 20 yard line, Walker caught a short pass from Cantu and turned it into and 80-yard touchdown play. The score gave the Huskies a 24-0 lead.

Carlos Arredondo (Schurr) had five receptions for 52 yards and Chris Clark caught three for 20 yards. Also coming up with three receptions each were Oliver (for 33 yards) and Forte (11 yards). Christopher DeLeon (Montebello) caught two passes for 11 yards.

Defensive end Guillermo Duran (Whittier) had a team-high seven tackles, including a sack, to lead the Huskies on defense. Garfield High products Lanny Delgado and Hector Cazales were credited with five tackles each. Delgado also had an interception.

Linebackers Justin Munoz and Joel Green, both of Jefferson High, were in on four tackles along with defensive back Tyrone Moore and linebacker Nasir Moore.

Nasir Moore intercepted a pass and combined with Cazales for a sack.
