SALT LAKE CITY — And just like that, the first week of fall camp is over up on the hill as the Utes wrapped up Day 3 of "Camp Kyle" Saturday at the Ute baseball field.

And while you would be hard pressed to find a cloud in the sky, it was equally obvious from the first snap to the last — Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham doesn't let up or take it easy on his players.

"I love the enthusiasm he has," Utah offensive lineman Carlos Lozano said after practice. "He just wants to make us better. He pushes us all the time, encourages us to be 100%. That's the best part about it. He's a great guy too."

What you don't know is that Lozano said that after Whittingham made his team run wind sprints following what was an already grueling practice. If one of the kickers missed a kick, everybody ran. If someone didn't touch the line at the end, everybody ran.

For a 6-7, 425-pound lineman, you probably wouldn't consider Lozano as a runner. But boy, you couldn't be more wrong. Carlos recently lost 25 pounds. His secret?

"I'm just doing extra running on my own time, after lifting, getting on the elliptical or treadmill," Lozano, a junior college transfer from East Los Angeles College, said.

When the coaching staff has no sympathy for being tired near the end of practice, being able to run and run well is always a good thing.

The Utes will take Sunday off before returning to the practice field on Monday.

No big offensive changes

With first year offensive coordinator Brian Johnson calling the shots, expect to see more of a spread element to the offense, but no drastic changes.

"You're not going to see a dramatic change," Ute wideout Reggie Dunn said. "It is pretty much the same as last year. But you are going to see a lot of guys being more explosive, making more plays downfield and a lot more touchdowns."

From what was seen during the short window we were able to observe, the Utes did take multiple shots downfield.

"We are a little more aggressive than last year, I think. Some of the similar stuff, maybe spread out a little more," Utah quarterback Jordan Wynn said. "(Brian) is doing a good job of using all of our personnel. We have so many guys - tight ends, wide outs, running backs, we are going to be able to mix it up across the field."

Utes land a new commit

The Utes added a wide receiver for their 2013 class, beating out Arizona, Cal, Colorado, Oregon State and UCLA. Wide receiver X'avier Shepherd, a 5-11, 175-pounder out of Lakewood High School in California was in Salt Lake today and made his commitment after watching practice.
