Medwood represents Belize in London






Kenneth Medwood, a product of Roosevelt High School and East L.A. College, will be representing Belize in the 400-meter hurdles at the Summer Olympic Games in London.

Kenneth Medwood faced plenty of tough competition as a track and field standout at Roosevelt High School, East L.A. College and Long Beach State.
But that was nothing compared to what the 24-year-old will be going against in London over the next couple of weeks.
Medwood, one of three athletes representing the Central American country of Belize, is entered in the highly-competitive 400-meter hurdles at the Summer Olympic Games that get under way Friday.
Competition in his event starts Aug. 3.
“I am so proud that I can compete for Belize at the Olympic Games,” Medwood said on the nation’s Olympic website. “This is a dream and I hope I can make Belize proud. I feel really good, I’m happy with how I have trained and hopefully I can go out there and perform well.”
The competition in London will be fierce.
Two-time Olympic gold medalist Angelo Taylor and 2012 Olympic trials champion Michael Tinsley of the United States, Puerto Rico’s Javier Culson, the current owner of the world’s fastest time, and Britain’s Dai Greene are some of the athletes to watch in this event.
Culson went 47.78 in London July 13 and Greene has a personal best of 47.84. Tinsley (48.33), Taylor (48.57) and Kerron Clement (48.89) are all in the medal picture based on their performances at the U.S. trials.
At the NCAA championships in 2010, Medwood, then a senior for Long Beach State, placed 17th in 51.65 in the semifinals. His 50.37 clocking earlier that season at the Beach Invitational broke a 24-year-old school record. He then beat that with a 49.66 to win the Big West title.
At East L.A. College, he won back-to-back state championships and set a school record of 51.63 in the 400 hurdles.
At Roosevelt, Medwood was a three-time City Section high jump champion and went to place fourth in 2005 and seventh in 2006 at the state meet. His mark of 6-5 is a school record.
He also lettered in basketball and tennis.
