A wild finish went the wrong way for Millikan as the Rams allowed 29 fourth-quarter points to South Gate, losing 57-46 on the road to fall to 0-3 on the season.

It was an ominous start for Millikan, as they fumbled the opening kickoff to set up a quick South Gate score. That was only the beginning of a wild opening minute of play.

Dean Duggan quickly responded for Millikan on their first offensive play, hitting Brian Chambers for a 70-yard touchdown to make it 7-6. The momentum was short lived, as the home Rams used a big return to set up another quick score, taking a 14-6 lead just a minute into the game.

South Gate would add another score to take a 21-6 lead after one quarter, but Millikan got off to a great start to the second frame. Duggan hit Sean Smith on the first play of the quarter to cut the lead to 21-12. The teams traded scores and headed to the half with South Gate leading 28-6.

The visitors took their first lead with a 14-yard TD pass from Duggan to Max Witt, and followed that up with a quarterback keeper from Duggan to go up 39-28. That score would remain until the fourth quarter when South Gate took things over.

After a touchdown made it just a three point game, an interception returned for a score restored South Gate’s lead at 43-39.

Millikan thought they had their winner with two minutes left as Manuel Robles scored from 16 yards out to give them a 46-43 lead, but it wouldn’t last. South Gate took advantage of a defensive miscue in the Millikan secondary to grab the lead back, 50-46, with just 35 seconds left. Another pick-six with the Rams in desperation mode put the game away for good.

Millikan remains in non-league play when they head to Paramount (2-1) next Friday, a team that just picked up a 48-35 win over Wilson.
