Roosevelt runs wild in 49-7 blowout

Even Roosevelt High School football coach Javier Cid never envisioned a game like this.

Not that he couldn’t see his team winning. It was winning with the ease it did Friday night at South Gate.

The Rough Riders turned a matchup of Eastern League teams with combined 9-1 records into a blowout and didn’t waste any time doing so in rolling to a 49-7 victory over the previously undefeated Rams.

Scoring two touchdowns before they had run 10 plays, the Rough Riders (5-1, 2-0) went on a five-touchdown blitz in the first 24 minutes and led, 35-0 at the break.

“Right off the bat, we came out really strong,” Cid said. “(Gilbert) Herrera and the offensive line did a really good job at the beginning of establishing the run.”

A more balanced attack was the original plan, but when the run began working so well, the Riders decided to stick with it, according to Cid.

“There are situations where you have to run and throw,” he said. “We want to be as balanced as we can. But if you start running the ball the way we were you want to stick with it. Today, the run was big for us.”

They did such a good job of that, only one pass was attempted in the first half, and it was incomplete. Instead, the Riders rode a ground attack that netted 380 yards before intermission and 447 for the night.

Herrera carried 15 times for 166 yards and two touchdowns and Alex Barreto came in after him and carried 13 times for 187 yards and three scores. Quarterback David Arriaga ran five times for 83 yards and a TD. He threw a 39-yard scoring pass to Daniel Arriaga in the second half.

Herrera set the tone on their first possession by carrying all four times of a 50-yard drive, scoring from four yards out.

When the Rough Riders got the ball back, he carried all three times of a 66-yard drive, scoring on an eight-yard run. His 58-yard dash to the eight set up the score.

In the second period, Barreto scored on 67- and eight-yard runs and Arriaga went 34 yards for another TD on an option play. Barreto’s third TD of the night was on a 34-yard run in the third period.

As impressive as an offense that averaged 10.7 yards per snap was, the same could be said for the defense.

The Rough Riders dominated the line of scrimmage, sacking South Gate quarterback Joseph Gonzalez four times and intercepting him twice.

The Rams (5-1, 1-1), averaging better than 40 points per game entering the contest, netted just 227 yards of total offense, 103 of that on the ground.

Gonzalez was 9 of 20 for 124 yards, but was picked off by Hilberto Alvarado and Kenny Avila.

Gonzalez had early success throwing to Sammy Perez, who caught four passes for 95 yards, including a 65-yarder. But all of that was in the first half.

The Rams finally got on the scoreboard when Alexander Flatos (six carries for 48 yards) went over from a yard out with 9:52 left.

“We played well, the offense did a really good job,” Cid said. “I was really happy with the performance.”
