Errors and Rain Halt BrewCrew; Fall into Loser's Bracket
The BrewCrew carried a long season of winning momentum into the semi-finals of the Chesapeake League's Winners Bracket where they would take on the Annapolis Pirates. The Pirates had given the BrewCrew somewhat of a fit this season, battling them tough in all three games. This would be no exception.
Errors derailed starter EJ Nadolny in the third as three unearned runs crossed the plate. Sean Welling entered the game in relief but was halted by a lightning storm that sent this game into Tuesday. Ryan Welling relieved to get out of the jam that Nadolny had left on Sunday and went on to throw a scoreless fourth as well. Devon Jerrard entered in the fifth and did not have his normal stuff. He allowed 2 earned and 2 unearned runs over five innings including 8 strikeouts.
The bats remained cool as a cucumber in this one till the 8th. Hits by Ben Henry and Connor Goodie sparked a two run rally to bring the score to 6-3. Then in the ninth hits by Henry, Matt Gabrielski, and Dre Jones plated Johnny Bandzwolek (HBP) and brought the tying run to the plate. But the rally ended there to give us our 7-3 final.
The five errors and five unearned runs leave the BrewCrew deserted in the Loser's Bracket, needing five consecutive wins to take the Chesapeake MSBL Crown.
Next up is the Chesapeake Brewers in an elimination game.
BrewCrew Eliminate Brewers with Emphatic Win
After losing last night to the Annapolis Pirates, the BrewCrew will need to win five consecutive games to win the Chesapeake MSBL Tournament. And let's make that one down with four to go. In the beginning, this game was a tough battle. Starter Zach Nadolny worked a perfect op of the first and then the bats got it going.
Dre Jones was hit by a pitch and later scored on an error. Z. Nadolny continued to roll with three more scoreless innings. In the fourth and BrewCrew with a 1-0 lead, the Brewers loaded the bases with one out but Z. Nadolny settled in to strikeout the last two. In the bottom half, EJ Nadolny got the rally started with a lead off double. He and Travis O'Brien (BB) would score on a single by the heating up Matt Gabrielski.
Tyler Mister took over for Zach Nadolny on the mound in the fifth. And he delivered scoreless fifth and sixth innings. Then in the bottom half of the sixth, the flood gates would open with an enormous 12 run inning. Jones, Kenny West, Z. Nadolny, Gabrielski, Ben Henry, and EJ Nadolny had hits while Connor Goodie had two in the inning. Mister got three outs in the seventh to complete his save and end the game.
Z. Nadolny got the win and went 2/2, Matt Gabrielski went 3/3 with two RBIs, Connor Goodie went 2,4 with 2b, 3b and 4 RBIs, and EJ Nadolny went 2/5 with two RBIs.
Next up for the BrewCrew is the Mid-Atlantic World Series.
BrewCrew Win in 11 to Advance to Chesapeake League Semis
EJ Nadolny started for the BrewCrew in an elimination game for the Chesapeake League Playoffs against the Chesapeake Hooks. Hooks took an early 2-0 lead with runs in the first and fourth. But the BrewCrew answered in the fifth with RBI hits by Zach Nadolny, Sean Welling and Johnny Bandzwolek.
The Hooks came back against Steve Cooke, who took over in relief to take the lead in the seventh. In the ninth, with one out, Zach Nadolny and Matt Gabrielski had back to back doubles to tie the game. BrewCrew finally capped the win on a walk off infield single by Bandzwolek.
Steve Cooke threw six innings in relief allowing only one earned run and capturing the win. Sean Welling paced the offense with four hits and an RBI. Next up for the BrewCrew is the Blue Wave in the semis.
Mister Leads BrewCrew to Championship; Cooke Catfishes A Win
Tyler Mister had his best game as a member of the BrewCrew when they needed it the most. He started for the mound for the BrewCrew and was excellent. He persevered through several errors and misplays that lead to runs for the Blue Wave. But the shaky defense was absolved by the offense.
Mister left the game, tied in the top of the seventh and enter Steve Cooke. Cooke is throwing his second game of the week in relief as he prepares for the York Labor Day next weekend. Cooke threw the final 2.1 innings scoreless. In the bottom of the eighth, Tommy Mazurkiewicz walked with two outs. Ben Henry then doubled to deep right center to score him and take the lead for good.
Next up for the BrewCrew is the Annapolis Pirates. The BrewCrew need to win two consecutive to capture the Chesapeake Playoff Championship.
BrewCrew Finish in Second of Chesapeake Playoffs, but Win Regular Season
After their tenth game in eleven days, a Co-Championship in the Mid-Atlantic World Series, a run from the last place elimination game, to the if necessary championship game, the winning has ended. One day before the York Labor Day Tournament, which takes five-to-nine games to win that championship, all momentum has come to a stand still.
Devon Jerrard started for the BrewCrew and had a little time to warm up. He allowed one unearned run in the first. Ryan Welling answered with a two-run homer to take the lead. The 'Crew then loaded the bases in the second with a chance to extend the lead but a double play stopped the rally. Everything went down from there. They continued to ground into double plays in the next two innings as well. Ben Henry had three hits as Tyler Mister and Ryan Welling had two hits. The Pirates then poured it on to take the championship.
This ends a great season for the BrewCrew where then won the regular season title in the Chesapeake and finished second in the playoffs. The BrewCrew hope to continue their successful season in the York Labor Day Tournament.
