Saugus Defeats BrewCrew to Open Mid-Atlantic World Series
The Baltimore BrewCrew start their mission to defend the 2018 Mid-Atlantic World Series against the Saugus Wings. Mike Devecchio made his first start of the season. The 2014 Cy Young Award Winner was sharp, allowing one run over 4 innings with eight strikeouts. He was relieved by his younger brother, Cameron Kalandros. Cam threw 1.1 innings, allowing two runs but exited with a two runs lead. The Wings were able to do something that no team has done all season, and that is comeback against Steve Cooke to send the game to extras.
In the extra frame, Saugus was able to put up two runs and take the win from the BrewCrew's grasp. The BrewCrew was lead by Bryan Nolan who recorded three hits, three runs and three RBIs.
Next up for the BrewCrew is Average Joes, tomorrow morning at 8am.
BrewCrew Defeat Average Joes, Advance in Mid-Atlantic
Sean Welling started for the BrewCrew and turned in a courageous performance of which even Curt Schilling would of been proud. Sean Welling delivered four shutout innings with a painful hip pointer to set up the BrewCrew for the victory. Andrew Clow sparked the offense with a homerun of his own to set the BrewCrew up for the 10-0 win. Andy Welling threw the final inning 1-2-3 to push the BrewCrew into the double elimination part of the tournament.
The BrewCrew received the #3 seed and will take on the NY Hawks in the next game at 4pm.
Cooke Dominates, BrewCrew Advance to Finals
In a die-hard pitcher duel, Steve Cooke proved why he is deserving of the "Best Pitcher in MD" status. Cooke shutdown the undefeated Clementes for the second consecutive year. The only threat came in the bottom 6th, when the Clementes loaded the bases with one out. But a double play ball to Kenny West ended the threat.
The first batter of the game, Dre Jones got one of a few hits for the BrewCrew. He scored on an RBI groundball by Ryan Welling. That run would hold. The BrewCrew added another when Johnny Bandzwolek scored after he pinch ran for Sean Welling on his single. Bandzwolek scored on a dropped pop up hit by Andrew Clow.
The win sets up the BrewCrew for a championship opportunity against the winner of Clementes against NY Hawks.
NY Hawks Return Favor to BrewCrew; Teams Split Championship
The BrewCrew defeated the Hawks in the semi-final only to have to play them again in the championship. Win, and the BrewCrew take home the Mid-Atlantic World Series Championship. Lose, and force the if-necessary Championship between the teams. Joey Zuniga took the ball for the BrewCrew. He has long time been a championship for the Brunswick Orioles and was making his first career start for the BrewCrew. It did not go as planned.
The Hawks jumped on the BrewCrew with four in the first and expanded the lead to eight to two going into the fourth. The BrewCrew answered behind Andrew Clow's grand slam but were unable to finish the comeback. Johnny Bandzwolek finished the scoring with a two-run homer over the scoreboard in the 7th.
In the end, there was not enough light for the if-necessary game and the teams split the championship. Zach Nadolny, Andrew Clow, and Zach Nadolny all had multi-hit games.
