Frequently Asked Questions

When do tryouts start?

Tryouts start in late October.

What do I need in order to tryout?

All students participating in athletics at Ponte Vedra High School must submit all appropriate forms electronically prior to participation. Forms need to be submitted at www.athleticclearance.com. We suggest forms be turned in by mid October. Any incomplete forms may delay the player’s participation. Please read all forms carefully as there are some areas that require specific details. At tryout, players will need to wear white shirt, dark shorts and white socks. Please wear cleats and shin guards.

How many days are tryouts?

This will be at the discretion of the coaching staff and is usually dependent on how many players tryout, but typically tryouts last about 3-5 days. Additional tryouts may be needed if tryout numbers are higher than expected.

When and where will teams be posted?

Teams will be posted as soon as possible after tryouts.

When and where are practices?

Practices are usually right after school on Monday through Thursday on the soccer field. There may be some practices held at Davis Park if there is a conflict at the stadium.

Is transportation provided to away games?

Transportation is provided to most away games. The players are required to ride the bus to and from the game. The boys will be required to leave school early for some of the away games. For fans, directions to away games can be found on the website.

Do JV and varsity teams have the same schedule?

Yes. Both teams have the same schedule. JV games start at 5:30 and Varsity games start at 7:20.

Does it cost anything to play?

Yes. Although the St. Johns County School district allocates some funds to high school athletic programs, it does not cover all of the expenses. To participate on the team, a player must pay a team fee. This fee includes costs for related items such as team meals and a practice pack.

What if I can't pay the required fees?

Players that may have trouble paying the team fee need to talk to Coach Daniel Villarreal or the team liaison, Kamie McBrayer. We will work with players in any type of financial situation.

If we pay the team fee, that means we don't have to do anything else, right?

No. The team fee only covers a small percentage of expenses. It also takes volunteers to make a season successful. We need all players and families to help in fundraising and fill our volunteer positions.

What is a typical schedule for game day?

The players remain after school until the game. We recommend they use this time to study. The JV team plays at 5:30 and the Varsity team plays at 7:00.

When do the players eat?

The JV team will be given a snack after school and will eat dinner immediately after their game. The Varsity team will eat dinner after school and will be given a snack after their game. Your payment for team meals covers the drinks, snacks and dinners. We rely on volunteers to pick up and deliver meals. Please let us know of any allergies at the parent meeting.

What is a practice pack?

The practice pack includes two short-sleeved t-shirts and one long-sleeved t. Players will wear these to practices. The cost of these items is included in the player fee.

What is included in the uniform?

Each player’s kit includes a white uniform and a black uniform consisting of a jersey, shorts and socks. These are contained within the player duffel bag. In addition, the varsity players have a black rain jacket. The team loans these items to the players for the season at the end of which all pieces MUST be returned in the team duffel bag clean and in good condition otherwise replacement fees will be imposed.

In addition, each player must have a team polo and warm up suit. If your student is new to the program or has outgrown his polo shirt and warm up suit, please purchase a new one at the parent meeting.

Also please note that the uniform will not be distributed until the player fee has been paid.

What do I do if my uniform and/or practice pack is too big/small?

Best efforts are taken to provide players with the correct size uniform but we are limited in sizes and quantities. In addition, the practice pack items are printed prior to the season starting and are distributed in sizes identical to the player’s uniform.

How does the team communicate?

Our team will communicate in a variety of ways including Team Snap, Facebook and Instagram. Please make sure to sign up for Team Snap at the beginning of the season. Also, check the the team website for information. Finally, the boys communicate through a team chat that is created by the captains at the start of the season.

Why should I join the PV Sharks Booster Club?

We encourage every family to join the PV Sharks Booster Club. The Booster Club supports a broad range of requirements, such as maintenance and capital improvements to playing venues, cross-sport infrastructure projects, and ongoing shortfalls for the Athletic Department. These obligations average $30,000 to $40,000 a year. Your support of the Booster Club is essential to keeping our athletes on the field.
