Hello Matinee Players,
Happy New Year!! Hope all is well with everyone. We are looking to get an early start with our planning for the upcoming seventh season of the CDMSBL Matinee Division and hope that you will be joining us this upcoming year in again playing weekday games under the warm sun on the A Diamond in Schenectady.
We expect to again play on Wednesdays this year starting at 11AM and will continue to work with league officials to coordinate the scheduling of 55 and 62 games to minimize conflicts with our Division. We are also targeting August 20th for our annual Cooperstown game and will have our season ending BBQ game sometime in October. As has been our practice we will begin playing sometime in the late May/early June timeframe and continue right through the end of October….our goal remains as always to play quality games each week with a licensed umpire on a great field and have fun. In addition this will provide great preparation each week for our league games as well as our Fall Tournaments. Our vision for the Matinee games remains the same in that we strive to play competitive, crisply played games each week. Last year we played 16 Matinee games and expect to be right around that number again this year.
One big change this year is that Jimmy K. will no longer be Managing one of the teams as he had decided to just be a regular Matinee player. Jimmy’s work commitments with the City of Rensselaer are taking a lot of his time and just playing will work out much better for him during weekdays. He will continue to coordinate our annual Cooperstown game and will be in touch with everyone when we firm up the details for that game. The good news is that we just finalized contract negotiations with his replacement and I’m happy to announce that Don Ball has agreed to become the new Manager of the Matinee Bad Guys! Don’s current Managerial position with the 55 Dodgers and his previous work running the Capital Division make him the ideal addition to our Matinee Division Admins!
One last thing to remember is in regards to the required wavier forms that all players need to complete for all divisions that you play in, including the Matinee Division. This form can be found at the following link: Forms and Documents - Capital District Senior Men's Baseball League
Just choose Matinee Division for the team name when completing your form for our Division.
We will continue to keep in touch as we get closer and look forward to taking the field again with you all.
Thanks
Jim McQuade

Matinee Division Game 2 Recap. 5/29
Matinee Players,
The Matinee Division was blessed with another spectacular weather day at the A Diamond today for our second game of the season as McQ’s team escaped with the 14-9 victory. This was another hotly contested game as Mike Clary took the mound for JK’s team and Jonny Martin got the start for McQ’s team. After a scoreless first inning, both teams put up a three spot in the second to start the scoring barrage. McQ’s team then took a brief lead in the third inning with a single run but JK’s team answered with a two-run fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead into the fifth. McQ’s team then took control of the game with two runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to take a commanding 10-5 lead heading into the seventh. Both teams added four more runs in the late innings to bring the final score to 14-9. Ron Lochner had four hits for McQ’s team while Joe Careccia, Dave Mitchell, Paul Cerone, Jon Martin and Paul Miles each had two apiece. For JK’s team (without their book) I remember hits from Kevin Carpenter, Don Ball, Kent Baker and Steve Van Gelder among many others.
I have a bat that was left after the game…34 Cooperstown Dustin Disney Oaks Christin Maple..let me know who the owner is and I’ll get it back to you.
Game three will be played next Wednesday June 5th. Look for our next IN or OUT email message from Jimmy K. and reply promptly and accordingly.

Matinee Division Game 3 Recap. 6/5
Matinee Players,
For the third consecutive Wednesday our Matinee Division game was played under perfect conditions as sunny blue skies and warm temperatures provided the backdrop for Game 3 of our season. This game was a typical back and forth affair decided in the ninth inning as McQ’s team came away with the 8-7 victory. Mike Clary took the mound for McQ’s team and was rudely greeted by the first four hitters in JK’s lineup….a single by Paul Miles, a walk to Alex Marin and back-to-back singles by Joe Careccia and Dave Mitchell quickly staked JK’s team to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first. McQ’s team responded in the bottom of the inning against starting pitcher Jerry Solomon and took the lead back with three runs as Paul Scuteri, Jerry Rosen, Kent Baker, Mike Clary and Rick Saidenberg all singled, sandwiched around a double by Ron Lochner. This first inning was pretty much the way the entire game went with the teams trading runs throughout, and the game headed to the bottom of the eighth inning tied at seven. Paul Scuteri then delivered a two-out single for McQ’s team plating the go-ahead run and the game went to the ninth with McQ’s team clinging to a 8-7 lead. Matt Miles then came in to close the game and promptly walked the first hitter. After a strike out, the very dangerous Joe Careccia came to the plate and scorched a line drive headed for center field that Miles speared out of the air and quickly doubled off the runner at first, and the game came to an abrupt end.
Matt Miles, Rosen and Saidenberg had three hits while Lochner, Scuteri and Clary added two hits for McQ’s team. Tom Bain led the way for JK’s team with three hits including a triple, and Paul Miles, Solomon and Marin chipped in with two hits apiece.
Game four will be played next Wednesday June 12th. Look for our next IN or OUT email message from Jimmy K. and reply promptly and accordingly.

Matinee Division Game 4 Recap. 6/12
Matinee Players,
The beat goes on in the Matinee Division as we had another beautiful day at the A Diamond today, and another nail-biter with McQ’s team escaping with the 5-4 victory. Both teams traded single runs in the first as Paul Miles led off the game for McQ’s team with a single and Carlos Espada then followed with a walk. A botched double steal then resulted in a prolonged run down as Espada was able to avoid the tag long enough to allow Miles to score all the way from second. In the bottom of the inning TJ Scorsone delivered a two-out RBI single for JK’s team and the game was knotted at one. McQ’s team scored single runs in the next four frames with JK’s team scoring a single run in the third and two more in the fifth, highlighted by a Tom Maney two-out, two-RBI single and the game headed to the sixth inning with McQ’s team clinging to the 5-4 lead. Solid pitching and great defense was the story for the rest of the game as neither team was able to score again. In the bottom of the eighth with the leadoff man aboard for JK’s team, Ron Lochner hit a screaming line drive to center that looked like a sure extra-base hit until Kevin Carpenter reached back and snared the liner preventing the potential tying and winning runs from advancing to scoring position. After a single and a walk loaded the bases, Dan Durback was able to induce a 6-6-3 double play and McQ’s team escaped the inning unscathed. Mike Clary, Scorsone, Don Ball and Jimmy K. all pitched well for JK’s team while Jerry Solomon and Durback pitched the first eight innings for McQ’s team and Espada closed out the game in the ninth for the save.
Miles led the way for McQ’s team with three hits while Ron McCarthy chipped in with two. For JK’s team Maney, Scorsone and Kent Baker all had two knocks.
Game five will be played next Wednesday June 19th. Look for the next IN or OUT email message from me and reply promptly.

Matinee Division Game 5 Recap. 6/26
Matinee Players,
Another beautiful day at the A Diamond today, and another typical Matinee game as JK’s team came away with a hard-fought 5-3 victory. Mike Clary got the start for JK’s team and pitched a scoreless top of the first. In the bottom of the inning Matt Miles took the hill for McQ’s team who then committed two uncharacteristic two-out errors, and JK’s team took an early 2-0 lead. After scoreless innings in both the second and third, McQ’s team scored two in the top of the fourth to tie the game. Alex Marin led off with a single and was wild-pitched to second. After a groundout, Jerry Rosen delivered Marin with a single and eventually scored the second run of the inning on a Ron McCarthy base hit. The game then proceeded to the pivotal bottom of the sixth still knotted at two when Clary executed a perfect safety-squeeze to score the go-ahead run. Dan Durback then followed that up with an RBI single and JK’s team suddenly had a 4-2 lead. In the top of the eighth McQ’s team scored their third run on singles by McCarthy, Kent Baker and Paul Miles and the game went to the bottom of the inning with JK’s team clinging to a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the eighth JK’s team then scored a single insurance run to take a 5-3 lead heading into the ninth. Carlos Espada then closed the door on McQ’s team and recorded his second straight save, and the game ended as both teams headed to the coolers.
We will take next week off for the 4th of July Holiday and resume our Matinee games on Wednesday July 10th. Look for the next IN or OUT email message from me and reply promptly.
Also please see the attached photo of the last four standing at the cooler session.

Matinee Division Game 6 Recap 7/10
Matinee Players,
On a steamy July day where the heat index approached 100 degrees in the late innings, the Matinee Division held another instant classic at the A Diamond in Schenectady today. This game started however in a less than classic fashion as JK’s team soared out to a 5-0 lead after three innings. Mike Clary took the hill for McQ’s team in the top of the first and promptly walked leadoff hitter Carlos Espada who came around to score on an infield error, and JK’s team was in front 1-0. After Jimmy K. pitched a quick 1-2-3 bottom of the first, JK’s team scored another two runs in the top of the second, aided by several errors and the score was now 3-0. After another quick scoreless second inning for McQ’s team, JK’s team then stringed together consecutive singles by Alex Marin, Dave Mitchell and Kent Baker and the lead ballooned to 5-0. After a scoreless bottom of the third, the teams traded single runs in the fourth and the game headed to the fifth inning with JK’s team comfortably in front 6-1. After neither team scored in the fifth, Mitchell led off the sixth inning with his second single, stole second and was driven home by a Rick Knipper base hit to push the lead to 7-1.
At this point it looked bleak for McQ’s team but they answered in the bottom of the inning with a walk to Don Ball, a double by Dave Reed, and a clutch two-out, two-run double by Paul Scuteri to give the team some life and the score was now 7-3 heading to the seventh. JK’s team failed to score in the top of the inning as McQ’s team then added a fourth run and the game went to the eighth with JK’s team still in front 7-4. Ron Massaroni then came in to pitch for McQ’s team and after retiring his first batter, Jerry Rosen then smoked a long triple in the right-center gap and JK’s team was poised to add to their lead. Massaroni had other ideas however and stranded Rosen at third by retiring the next two batters, and the lead remained at 7-4. In the bottom of the eighth Tom Bain was walked and Dave Reed followed with his second double of the afternoon. Both runners eventually scored, and the game headed to the ninth with JK’s team clinging to a 7-6 lead. Massaroni easily retired the side in the top of the inning and the game went to the bottom of the ninth with McQ’s team needing some magic.
Jimmy K. brought in his closer Espada who had recorded back-to-back saves in the two previous Matinee games to face leadoff hitter Mike Clary. Clary who had suffered a leg injury early in the game then stroked his third hit of the day on one good leg and Dan Hernandez followed with a long double. Suddenly McQ’s team had the tying and winning runs in scoring position with no outs. After recording an infield pop out, JK’s team elected to intentionally walk the next batter to load the bases and setup a force at any base. Donny Ball was next in the lineup and strode to the plate with the game in the balance and the crowd on their feet. Ball fell behind in the count and then with two strikes, scorched a dramatic line drive walk-off double to score Clary and Hernandez and McQ’s team escaped with the 8-7 victory!
The Matinee Division heads to Cooperstown for next week’s game on Doubleday field and we’ll then resume our games on the A Diamond on Wednesday July 24th.

Matinee Division Cooperstown Game 7 Recap 7/17
Matinee Players,
With threatening skies and rain all around yesterday, the Baseball Gods made sure we had warm and dry conditions when we took the field on historic Doubleday field for our annual trip to the mecca of baseball. As we were warming up the crowd starting filing in and it was obvious that we were in for a treat as a busload of summer campers filled the seats behind the home dugout, and these kids were loud! Not sure if it was his Yankee uniform or his boyish good looks, but the campers adopted Paul Cerone as their favorite player and each time Paul stepped to the plate the crowd went wild! Cheers of “Home Run Hitter” and “Paul, Paul, Paul” echoed throughout the stadium. Paul obliged his adoring fans by signing autographs and throwing baseballs to the crowd and was even interviewed by the media. When Paul ripped a base hit down the leftfield line in the fifth inning the crowd exploded and sadly, shortly thereafter it was time for the campers to go home as they all waved and shouted goodbye to their new favorite Yankee.
As far as the game went it was a close affair until McQ’s team had a big eighth inning and salted this one away to go on to the 14-5 victory. As with most of our games, this one was not about the outcome but more about the experience and sharing the field together, especially in Cooperstown! Another highlight of this game was playing with CDMSBL legend Tom Maney in his last game of the year. As I write this Tom is having season-ending back surgery to hopefully get him back feeling like his old self. In typical Maney fashion, in his last at bat he smoked a line-drive base hit in the left centerfield gap which everyone was so glad to see.
Once the game was over, after having a quick beer in the parking lot a bunch of us walked down to the Doubleday Café and had a nice dinner to wrap up a great day!
Matinee Division Game 8 Recap 7/24
The weather cooperated today for the Matinee Division as we once again avoided any rain at the A Diamond for our weekly contest on the best field in the Capital District. This game started quietly until the bottom of the third inning when McQ’s team pushed across two runs and then added a third run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI groundout by Dennis Lane. McQ’s pitching duo of Lane and Mike Clary continued to keep JK’s team scoreless as the game proceeded to the bottom of the fifth, when McQ’s team erupted for five more runs to effectively put this game away early. Rick Knipper, Matt Miles and Paul Scuteri had hits in the big inning. McQ’s team added a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Clary and then after a scoreless seventh, the game headed to the eighth with McQ’s team comfortably in front 9-0. JK’s team then ended the shutout as Jerry Solomon ripped a two-out RBI single to plate their first run. In the bottom of the eighth inning McQ’s team then batted around with brothers Paul and Matt Miles, along with Paul’s son Nick all scoring runs in the inning. In the top of the ninth Dave Mitchell smoked a bases-clearing three-run double to the leftfield gap for JK’s team to end the scoring and make the final score 15-4, as the two teams then headed to the coolers.
Along with Mitchell’s RBIs, JK’s team was led by Solomon and Tim Brown who both had multiple hits on the day.
The Matinee Division will take next week off, so our next Matinee game will be on Wednesday August 7th. Keep an eye out for our next IN or OUT email for this game.

Matinee Division Game 9 Recap 8/7
Matinee Players,
Another gorgeous day at the A Diamond with Jonny Martin taking the ball for McQ’s team and Mike Clary on the hill for JK’s team. Martin retired the side in order in the top of the first while Clary had a little trouble in the bottom of the inning as Carlos Espada and Tim Brown both singled to start the inning. Clary retired the next two batters and hit Dan Maguire to load the bases, but then retired the side on a comebacker. In the second inning both Jerry Rosen and Dave Mitchell had hits and came around to score as JK’s team took an early 2-0 lead. Clary then settled down and pitched brilliantly for the next several innings inducing three more 1-3 putouts as the game headed to the fifth with JK’s team still in front 2-0. The game then turned in a big way as JK’s team scored three runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth, and the rout was on. Jerry Rosen was again the catalyst for JK’s team in these two innings with two more hits along with hits from Jim Jazz, Rick Saidenberg, Alex Marin, Ron Lochner, Gibby Travis and another hit by Mitchell, this time a long double. With the score now 10-0 McQ’s team finally showed some signs of life as they scored four runs in the bottom of the inning with the big hit, a two-run triple by Paul Post to bring the score to 10-4 and provide a slight ray of hope. That hope was quickly extinguished as JK’s team scored two more runs in the seventh and then tacked on six more in the ninth to make the score 18-4, and after a meaningless run in the bottom of the ninth, the game mercifully came to an end with the final score 18-5.
Our next Matinee Division game will be next Wednesday Aug. 14th so look for our IN or OUT email for this one.

Matinee Division Game 10 Recap 8/14
Matinee Players,
Another perfect weather day at the A Diamond today as McQ’s team went out and batted around in the top of the first scoring seven runs to open the game. JK’s team answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and then preceded to outscore McQ’s team 7-5 for the remainder of the game, but could not recover from the disastrous top of the first as McQ’s team recorded the 12-9 victory. McQ’s team was led by Greg Mangione, Mike Clary, Ralph Caputo and Tom Hayes who all recorded multiple hits on the day. JK’s team was led by Jim Jazz, Dan Hernandez, Joe Parker, Tom Bain and Jimmy K. who all also had multiple hits.
Our next Matinee Division game will be next Wednesday Aug. 21th so please reply to Jimmy K’s email if you’d like to play.

Matinee Division Game 11 Recap 8/28
Matinee Players,
After a two week break the Matinee Division was back at it today, and again under a perfect weather day! (This year has been the best weather-year we have ever had for our Division, in now our sixth year) McQ’s team started the top of the first with two quick runs as Greg Mangione, Ron McCarthy and Ron Lochner had consecutive singles. JK’s team answered with a run in the first and another in the second to tie the score at two. After a single run in McQ’s top of the third and a scoreless bottom of the inning, the game headed to the fateful top of the fourth with McQ’s team in front 3-2. McQ’s team then reeled off four consecutive singles (Loncher, Joe Parker, Alex Marin, and Mike Clary) and proceeded to bat around in the inning to score seven runs, and seemingly put the game away early. JK’s team however had other ideas and put up a single run in the bottom of the inning and then scored four more in the bottom of the fifth, and the game was again in the balance with McQ’s team leading 10-7. Tim Brown, Rick Saidenberg and Paul Scutieri had the big hits for JK’s team in their half of the inning. Unfortunately for JK’s team this was as close as they would get as McQ’s team put up an additional three runs in the sixth inning to end any hope they would have. Conner McCarthy had the big hit in the inning with a two-run double. After a few more late runs scored between the teams, the final score ended up in favor of McQ’s team 15-8.
Mike Clary pitched very well in his six innings for McQ’s team and Ralph Caputo then pitched two scoreless innings, escaping a bases-loaded, no outs situation in the eighth. Conner McCarthy finished up in the ninth.
For JK’s team Tim Brown, Dennis Lane, and Tom Hayes had multiple hits, while Lochner, Mangione, Parker, Caputo, and Conner McCarthy had multiple hits for McQ’s team.
Matinee Division Game 12 9/4
Matinee Players,
Ron Lochner and Mike Clary led McQ’s team to a crazy 19-12 victory on a gorgeous day at the A Diamond today. Lochner went 6 for 6 with 6 RBIs and Clary went 5 for 6 and also got the win, as he pitched five strong innings. Clary was a home run short of the cycle and Lochner also scored four runs. This game started with McQ’s team scoring three runs in the first and two more in the second to take an early 5-0 lead. JK’s team answered in the third with an RBI single by Jimmy Hicks and then Jimmy K. followed that up with a double down the right field line scoring Hicks to make it a 5-2 game. McQ’s team kept scoring after that and built a seemingly insurmountable 16-3 lead until JK’s team had an amazing top of the eighth inning scoring eight runs without recording a single out, and then added a ninth run to cut the lead to 16-12. Tom Bain led off the eighth with an innocent bunt single and JK’s team then kept hitting and scoring, batting around in the inning with the big blow being a bases-clearing 3-run double by TJ Scorsone. McQ’s team was finally able to escape the top of the eighth inning and then added some much needed insurance runs in the bottom of the inning to close out the scoring.
For McQ’s team Dan Durback had four hits and Carlos Espada, Tim Brown, Dave Mitchell and Paul Cerone all added multiple hits. I don’t have the book for JK’s team but know they had a lot of hits and that Jim Jasiewicz added multiple hits on the day.
Our next Matinee Division game is next Wednesday the 11th so look for an IN or OUT email for this game from Jimmy K. and respond promptly.
Thanks
Jim
Matinee Division Game 13 9/11
Matinee Players,
Once again our Matinee Division game was played today on a perfect day for baseball, that in a small way makes you grateful for the blessings in your life, which was especially poignant on the anniversary of 9/11. Before our game both teams lined up on the baselines for a moment of silence to remember the fallen of that fateful day and to remember how lucky we all are.
Once the game got underway it was JK’s team that struck first as they pushed across a single run in in the bottom of the first inning as Carlos Espada walked, was wild-pitched to second, stole third and eventually came in to score the game’s first run. McQ’s team answered in the top of the third with a leadoff walk by Mike Aiello and an RBI single by Rick Siedenburg. In the bottom of the inning JK’s team scored four big runs on RBI’s by Alex Marin and Dave Mittchell, and a 2-run single by Ron Lochner to make the score 5-1. McQ’s team then scored two in the fourth and one in the top of the fifth to make it 5-4, but JK’s team quickly extended their lead in the bottom of the inning with four more runs, highlighted by RBI singles by Ron Smaka and Paul Cerone, and suddenly the lead ballooned to 9-4.
The sixth inning turned out to be the turning point in this game as McQ’s team reeled off four consecutive singles by Jim Jazz, Matt Miles, Tim Brown and Jerry Rosen to score three runs as JK’s team now clung to a 9-7 advantage. McQ’s team then brought in Don Ball to pitch and Ball was fantastic in relief as he set JK’s team down in both the sixth and seventh innings with no further damage, and the game went to the eighth with the same 9-7 score. In the top of the eighth McQ’s team then took command with four runs on singles by Brown, Rosen, Paul Post, Ron McCarthy and a big 2-RBI single by Kent Baker to take the 11-9 lead. Ball then went out and pitched another scoreless inning to get the win, and McQ’s team added three insurance runs in the ninth to make the final score 14-9. Timmy Brown with four hits and four runs scored, and Jerry Rosen with three hits and four RBI’s keyed the victory.
At our after-game cooler session we were treated to delicious grilled Hot Dogs courtesy of Jerry Rosen and Matt Miles!!
The Matinee Division is off next Wednesday and there is some uncertainty when our next game will be as the 55 Playoffs begin, so we’ll be in touch soon once we decide when our next game will be.
Thanks
Jim
Matinee Division Game 14 10/2
Matinee Players,
After a two-week break the Matinee Division resumed play today on a pleasant Fall day at the A Diamond in Schenectady. JK’s team started the scoring as they pushed across single runs in each of the first three innings, all on RBI groundouts. (two by Jerry Rosen and one by Dave Plew) McQ’s team answered with two runs in the first and a single run in the third on RBIs by Dave Mitchell, Don Ball and Charlie Freer. The game proceeded to the top of the fifth tied at 3, when JK’s team scored four big runs to take a 7-3 lead. Jimmy K. got the inning started with a base hit followed by back-to-backs walks, a couple of miscues and a single by Mike Clary. In the bottom of the sixth inning McQ’s team scored two runs on a single by TJ Scorsone, an RBI triple by Freer and an RBI Sac-fly by Don Ball. With JK’s team now leading 7-5, they put the game away in the seventh with another 4-run inning to take a commanding 11-5 lead. Three walks in the inning and singles by Dan Maguire and Joe Parker plated the four runs. A 2-run single by Mitchell in the bottom of the eighth inning for McQ’s team, and a loud double by Ron McCarthy in the top of the ninth finished the scoring and JK’s team walked away with the 13-7 victory.
Look for an email from Jimmy K. for our game next week and reply promptly when asked.
Thanks
Jim
Matinee Division Game 15 10/23
Matinee Players,
On a spectacular Fall day at the A Diamond this morning the Matinee Division took to the field (see attached photo) as Mike Girard for McQ’s team, and Darrell Duncan for JK’s team started on the hill for the two teams and both had eventful first innings. In the top of the inning McQ’s team scored two quick runs on singles by Greg Mangione, Jack Griffin, TJ Scorsone and an RBI double by Rick Saidenberg. JK’s team answered in the bottom of the inning with three runs on singles by Alex Marin, Jerry Rosen, Duncan and Kevin Carpenter. The story of this game was what happened after the first as JK’s tandem of pitchers, Duncan, Ron Massaroni and Rosen proceeded to shutout McQ’s team the rest of the way as JK’s team cruised to an easy 8-2 victory. JK’s team scored a single run in the third inning and then added three more in the sixth as Marin, Tim Brown and Joe Careccia all came around to score. Careccia then scored his third run on the day in the eighth inning to end the scoring.
After the game we held our annual BBQ and enjoyed each other’s company and feasted on burgers, dogs, salads, beans, cookies, etc….and washed them all down with some nice cold beers!
We will play our last game of the season next Wednesday the 30th with the long-range forecast calling for a high of 75!! Look for an email from me for this game and please reply promptly.
Thanks

Matinee Division Game 16 10/30 Last Game of the season.
