BUTTE CENTRAL 46 POLSON 52

Tis the season: Charity donations topple Maroons

by John Heglie

At Butte, the Lady Pirates seemed to tap into the holiday spirit of charity as they edged past the homestanding Lady Maroons of Butte Central. Polson used a big second quarter to shape the outcome with their highest point productivity of the season, then trumped that during the final frame as they matched Butte Central stride for stride down the stretch.. Trailing by two after the first frame, Polson surged ahead during second quarter action as they scored more points in the single frame than the entirety of their previous game against Bigfork.

Free-throw shooting loomed large in the outcome. Both teams combined for over fifty makes out of a mere handful under six dozen attempts. Polson converted an astounding 28 freebies with 60th percentile shooting fron the line, the most that can be recalled from recent memory. Sensational soph Natalie Adams rippled the net for ten of her varsity career high from the charity stripe, while Sam Rensvold was a pristine five for five. Polson spread the scoring wealth around to offset the Butte Central trio who scored double figures

Maidens turn the tables, sting Yellowjackets
by John Heglie

At the Ronan Events Center, the host Maidens posted field goal advantages by handfuls each of the first three quarters as their conversion rate kept the visiting Lady Yellowjackets from taking flight.  Stevensville was able to hold the reins on the point spread with 60th percentile conversion from the charity stripe. Zailee Hewankorn and Lauryn Buhr collaborated on over half of Maiden point productivity. Hewankorn, Buhr and Ally Luedtke combined for over 20 rebounds, a third of which were offensive.
Arianna Zepeda was the quintessential hostess as she served up five dishes for assists, while Luedtke along with Zepeda were the tandem of torment as the picked the pockets of the Lady Jackets for a combined ten steals.

BIGFORK 52 POLSON 13*

Knot-Ted by Norse: Vals tangle, trip, topple Pirate gals

by John Heglie

At Linderman Gym in Polson, the first round of the battle of the bays on Flathead Lake rowed by way of the harbor of the State B champion Bigfork Valkyries. The Lady Pirates turned in a respectable showing during first frame action as they stayed within single figures of their seasoned opponent. Had they been able to connect on a couple of  long distance triples from beyond the arc, they might have kept a greater swath of the game within reach. But shooting woes would plague LP from midway through the second quarter and thereafter, while Bigfork continued to put up double figures each frame.

One bright spot for the Lady Pirates was their defense, which helped keep the lid on the all-state Gunlock scoring machine through three quarters. Leading scorer Braeden, who had just surpassed the millennial mark the weekend prior with career point 1000, had only scored five through three frames of action, while sister Paeten had yet to find net. That all changed the final frame as the tandem combined for 11 points that included a trio of triples from beyond the arc. The Valkyries were far from scoring at will. They had to reload on missed shots with 23 offensive boards, reaping the benefit from numerous second, third and sometimes fourth chance efforts to procure many of their points. By contrast, Polson was able to nab from the offensive glass a handfull of five gleans off misses.

In the early going, the Lady Pirates were threading the ball into traffic to facilitate higher percentage looks inside. But the spacing of the Valkyrie defense would often disrupt passes with deflections when they weren't picking pockets outright with steals.

The disparity in point spread somewhat mystifies, begging for explanation. Residual effects from a recent solar storm that hampered LP shooting like it disrupted electronics? Or might invisible gremlins be to blame for wreaking mogwai mischief on the rim?

Whatever might have been the case, the Lady Pirates will extract benefits from playing such a high caliber opponent as they seek to square their record before the Christmas break.
