• Dillon 69, Stevensville 23: Sydney Petersen led with 18 points, Leila Stennerson provided 16 more and the Beavers (9-2, 4-0) had too many horses for the Yellowjackets (0-11, 0-4). Kenleigh Graham was also in double figures with 12 points, as was Halle Fitzgerald with 11 for Dillon, which led 50-10 at halftime. Sage Tash added eight.

• Laurel 55, Hardin 49: Dierra Takes Enemy led with 16 points and Taylor Slator added 13 in a losing cause for the Bulldogs, who fell behind the Locomotives 22-11 after one quarter and were just short with a fourth-quarter rally. No individual scoring was received from Laurel.

• Lewistown 50, Glendive 36: Siena Gambee led with 15 points and Jane Harrison provided eight in a losing cause for the Red Devils (3-8, 0-3), who trailed 19-8 after one quarter and couldn't catch up to the Golden Eagles (4-7, 1-1). No individual scoring was received from Lewistown.

• No. 3 Frenchtown 55, Corvallis 23: Mason Quinn, who is being recruited by NCAA Division I programs, pumped in 16 points, Heather Haskins added 13 and the Broncs (10-1, 3-1) kept rolling with a romp over the Blue Devils (4-8, 2-2). Sadie Smith added 11 points for Frenchtown, which led 20-7 after one quarter and had a 25-point lead at intermission. Ava Loran scored 12 points to lead Corvallis.

• Browning 56, Libby 10: Jerel White Grass orchestrated a balanced attack with 14 points and the Runnin' Indians (5-3, 3-0) blanked the Loggers (1-7, 0-3) in both the second and third quarters en route to a lopsided triumph. Teslin Trombley added nine points and Natalee St. Goddard eight for Browning. Kaydence Stanek and Rylee Delmas scored five points each for Libby.

Late rally propels Lady Pirates past Maidens in Rez roundball rivalry wrangle
by John Heglie

At the Ronan Events Center for the opener of the Ballers & Brawlers combo cross county clash, the visiting Lady Pirates and the host Maidens engaged in a close contest that would hang in the balance until the final minutes.
During final frame action, Polson would take a 34-29 lead off a pair of Julia Barnard free-throws, followed by a delictible dish to Mckenna Hanson for a deuce down under. The Maidens would craft comparable counters with a Kylee Kelch deuce off an offensive rebound, followed by the second triple of the night by Maddy Illig to tie at 34. A deuce and one by Zailee Hewankorn flipped the lead over to the Maidens, followed by an Illig field goal as Ronan went up by five, 34-39. With two and a half minutes remaining, Polson would ride the shoulders of Aleysia Black, who splash a trio of sequential triples. Her first of the final frame came off an inbound  that would close the gap 37-39. The second would flip the lead back over in favor of Polson, 40-39. A putback off an offensive rebound by Maiden Arianna Zepeda would tilt the lead back in favor of Ronan, 40-41. Black would then bury her third three of the quarter to reacquire the lead in favor of the Lady Pirates, 43-41. Thereafter, Ronan would get three chances to tie: a pair of free-throws would come up empty. Zepeda would snare the offensive rebound and attempt a putback that failed to acquire its target. Hewankorn corralled the second offensive rebound, but the wascally wabbit bunny couldn't be coaxed to hop down the rabbit hole. Lady Pirate Sam Rensvold would snare the defensive rebound and get fouled. She would make the front end of that trip to the charity stripe as well as another set that would solidify the margin.
The Lady Pirates placed a trio in double figures with Barnard, Black and Rylee Taylor-Jefferson each with a dozen. The Maidens had Illig notch ten, followed by Ally Luedtke with a half dozen. The freshman factor played a significant role in the outcome of  this wrangle. The Lady Pirate contingent converted nine field goals along with associated contributions, while the Maiden contingent notched three field goals along with going 4-5 from the charity stripe.
The second reduex round is slated for Saturday, February 10 at Polson.

Revisit to R House: Ramping up for return renditions of Rez roundball rivalry wrangles with Ronan
by John Heglie

When seeking potential antidotes those bouts of wintery blues, one intervention strategy is to attend a sporting event. In addition to breaking up the monotony of cabin fever, attendance provides a form of vicarious exercise by watching others doing workouts as they sprint back and forth. When it comes to local events, some of the more entertaining types of competition take place between area rivalries. Here in the Mission Valley among cross-county clashes, one such long-standing rivalry exists between Ronan and Polson.

Girls varsity: 4pm, Lady Pirates at Maidens on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at Ronan Events Center
Polson Frosh/JV at Ronan Frosh/JV on Monday, January 15, 3pm/6pm

Wrangle round one: Lady Pirates at Maidens
The last time the Maidens faced off against the Lady Pirates was at the Western A Divisional last season.
For an extensive stretch, the Ronan Maidens held a decade of dominance over the series, compiling a 19 game win streak. Last season, the Lady Pirates of Polson not only managed to snap that streak, but proceeded to sweep all three clashes. Prior to that, one had to trace back to when Ronan competed among the Class B ranks back in 2012 to find the last time Polson had won a game over the Maidens.
Currently, the Maidens are averaging among the mid-40s, while the Lady Pirates are averaging among the mid-30s with a pair of game highs that reached into the low 50s. While on the surface the scoring differential appears to favor Ronan, it merits some qualification in that Polson has faced four state qualifying teams from last season that have been playing at a high level this season: State B champion Bigfork, (2W) Loyola, (3W) Dillon and (4W) Browning.

Polson Lady Pirates (1-2, 4-5)
Visiting Polson (5-5) features a pair of seasoned senior starters, a junior returnee along with a passel of up-and-comer talents.
The role of spoon that stirs the LP pot is student body president and all-conference second-team senior guard Julia Barnard, a capable player who is prone to sparkle brightly under lights of high intensity like many multi-faceted Jules. Barnard was team second-leading scorer last season with a career high of two dozen who turned in a season high of 18 to ring in the new year. Barnard recently crested the triple century point plateau for varsity career scoring with aim toward attaining the next century threshold.
Polson's other seasoned senior is 5-10 post Mckenna Hanson, who is playing at a level with the goal toward attaining dual century club credentials for both scoring as well as rebounding after missing last season recovering from injury. Hanson just missed turning in a double-double in the recent overtime win over Whitefish as she closes in toward cresting the double century point plateau for varsity career scoring.
A third prong on the Pirate productivity pitchfork is junior forward Samantha Rensvold, who just turned in a career high among the mid-teens and is one of the more proficient free-throw shooters from the charity stripe with a history of placing highly in Elks Hoop Shoot competitions prior to making the roster of varsity. Her  proficiency as a pitcher in softball with a penchant for targeting the strike zone makes Rensvold a formidable weapon in the purple & gold arsenal.
Among returnees with limited varsity level experience, sophomore 5-10 forward Natalie Adams has been increasingly productive with her expanded role in the capacity of frequent starter. Adams has delved into the domain of double digits for scoring thrice this season with a career high of 16. Adams is also one of the more proficient free-throw shooters from the charity stripe with a season high ten splashes on the road against Butte Central.
Upperclass LP returnees include who filter into the lineup mainly in a reserve role include juniors Olivia Jore, Sierra Perez, Jaja Nichols and senior Zaylyn Morgan.
Promising freshman competing at a higher level than their years of experience play an integral role in the fortunes of the Lady Pirates. Speedy guard Rylee Taylor-Jefferson tends to wreak havoc on defense by disrupting opponent ball handlers while averaging a handful of points per game along with dishing out assists. Aleysia Black turned in a varsity career high 14 prior to the winter break, demonstrating a capability to procure points with optimal performance. Hinkley Moss has been averaging a handful of points in a productive reserve role while knocking at the door of delving into the domain of double digits on several occasions.
Other underclassmen who have periodically spelled starters in a reserve capacity have been sophomore post Josie Henriksen and freshman guard Ahrianna Rushing.

Ronan Maidens (1-1, 4-4)
After graduating over 60% of their scoring arsenal last season, the reconfigured rendition of the current Maidens have made strides at filling empty shoes created by vacancies. With only a lone senior among the squad in Mission transfer Ernie Tapia-Torosian, the Maiden roster is significantly comprised of a juggernaut of junior contributors. Junior returning starter 5-8 forward/post Lauryn Buhr accumulateddual century club credentials last season in both scoring as well as rebounding, has been averaging about a half dozen points per game this season while gleaning the glass for close to five rebounds per game as she closes in on her 200th varsity career rebound.  Speedy junior guard Arianna Zepeda merits christening with the nickname "Zip" due to her penchant for zigging and zagging her way around the court. Zepeda leads the Maidens in twin categories, dispensing dishes to teammates with multiple dozen assists thus far this season while picking the pockets of opponents with pilfers as she likewise leads the team in steals.
Junior 5-9 guard/forward Ally Luedtke missed a significant swath of last season recovering from injuries, so has been making up for lost time with her caliber of contributions this time around.
A trio of other juniors, 5-10 forward Kylee Kelch, guard Kaydance Santos and Kylynn DustyBull, combine to contribute invaluable minutes that enhance the caliber of Maiden competitiveness during strategic segments of contests.
The Maiden roster can draw from a handful of sensational sophomores to enhance their hardcourt resources. Guard Maddy Illig has emerged as the leading deep threat from beyond the arc with back-to-back double figure scoring outings the past few games after the winter break. Polson transfer post Nevaeh Perez joined Illig in scoring among double figures in a recent contest and will likely be highly motivated to put in a good showing against her former teammates. Other sophomore reserve resources include Bailee Woll, Olivia Cheff and Maddie Duffey.
Like their visiting counterparts, the Maidens have a handful of freshman who have all seen action during periodic junctures during the course of games half way through the regular schedule. The most point productive among these thus far have been guard/forward Zailee Hewankorn and guard Kailyn Marengo. Hewankorn has thrice scored among double figures that include a career high 17 prior to the winter break. Marengo has contributed more in a supplemental capacity, but her minutes have included some strategic segues that helped tilt the balance of outcomes in favor of the Maidens. Other frosh include Dallas St.Goddard, Rayna Tonasket and Aubrey Krell.

At the halfway juncture of their regulation schedules, both teams have notched a conference contest in their favor as well as posted four wins overall. Against opponents in common, both the Maidens as well as the Lady Pirates have fared similarly against four  nonconference squads, going 3-1 with similar single possession shortfalls to the Bitterroot Lady Broncs of Hamilton. Had the incursion of frigid polar vortex temperatures and associated blizzard conditions not postponed a trio of games on the schedules between both sides, the pool of opponents in common for comparison might have extended further to a half dozen.
Last season, the two regular schedule wrangles both hung in the balance until the waning seconds before the outcome was decided. Typically, any host team holds a slight advantage due to familarity with their own court environs along with associated advantages like partisan crowd and  negligible travel distance. But since the two communities reside in such close proximity to one another within a mere 15 minute commute under optimal travel conditions, the latter factors tend to be of less consequence in this instance. When it comes to home court advantage, the playing field likewise tends to be somewhat leveled by the motivational incentives that infuse most rivalries.
With so many variables that come into play with this Mission Valley rivalry, making a prediction one way or another is fraught with uncertainty. If one were to go against the grain of conventional wisdom and climb out on a limb, multiple indicators already mentioned point in the direction that  both squads are relatively evenly matched, suggesting that the result of this contest is likely to hinge upon a few strategic possessions much like last season. Both sides possess an influencial freshman factor, a rogue variable which could tilt the balance of the outcome one way or another dependent upon optimal performances by individual ingredients.

Due the below average temperatures and the impact of weather upon road conditions that cancelled preceding contests, those interested in attending this event should doublecheck postings from the venue to confirm whether the event will commence as scheduled. The weather forecasts a return to more normative conditions for this time of year on the day of competition.
