The South Metro Saints did what only two other teams in Federal history have done, win a game versus the Grays at Castle Field. Grant Schara pitched a complete game victory in an 8-3 shocker. Erik Hill went 3-5 and scored three runs for the Saints and took advantage of control problems from the Grays starter scoring six runs in the third. The Grays comeback attempt in the late innings fell short and Schara and the Saints started the season 4-0 with all impressive wins.
Then they traveled to Wisconsin.
And got swept by the St Croix Silverbacks and River Falls Groupers on the same day. The big fish came back from a 2-0 decipit, tying it up in the third inning and walking off the Saints in extra innings. Randy Comfort catches the loss. South Metro turned around and faced a much improved Silverbacks, Tim Noyes and Greg Wenzel both doubled for the S-Backs in the win. Steve Schneider threw four, only giving up three hits and getting the win. Andy Bertram closed out the final three for the impressive Save. The American East will be tough with the improved teams of the Rockets, Silverbacks, Saints and of course RIver Falls and the Mammoth. This will be a fun division to watch.
Quietly having a solid season is the Minnetonka Mustangs, the week before they upset the Minnetonka Saints in a 5-4 walkoff. This week Tony Brown and the Stangs rode into Chaska Athletic Park to notch another win on its saddle with a 10-5 victory. Brown pitched a complete game and Kraig Peterson had two hits with a double and Tom Eastman and Jeff Mertens also had two hits apiece. The Mustangs fell to the Loons 17-3 two nights later.
After catching a loss at home the Minnoka Grays took it out on the Minneapolis Bombers the following Sunday winning 15-2 in five innings. With only nine guys suited up, the Grays scored five in the first and ten in the second inning - led by Matt Johnson's three hits, two doubles and five runs batted in. Alex Gonzalez also had three hits. Bub Lovas picked up the win, his second on the season. Grays will take some time off for Memorial Weekend and not play again until the 31st. The Bombers will rebound versus the Capital City Cannons on Wednesday night.
Tom Corcoran homered twice for the Mammoth as they won 8-4 over the Cannons at Greenfield. Everyone enjoyed the friendly confines as Ryan Lutzka, Matt Dewolf and Corcoran all had three hits each. Randy Schmidt drove in three runs and Matt Grill went all seven for the win.
Things in Apple Valley are looking rough as they dropped to 1-4 over a loss to the St Paul JTs, sinking them to last place in the National East. Wade Johnson and Josh Stoll went toe to toe in a pitching duel, An early Jeremy Brooks double led to a Lucas Koerner hit that drove Brooks in for the 1-0 first inning lead for St Paul and that's all Block's boys would need for the win. Johnson pitched a complete game, scattering six hits, striking out six and walking zero. Stoll also went the distance only giving up two hits after that first inning but got no help from the supporting cast. Tough summer so far for the Athletics.
Another pitchers duel was in effect Sunday at Wintercrest as Dan Pluff for the Angels and mystery man for the Legends took a 0-0 game into the sixth inning, until St. Michael crossed the plate twice in the sixth and once in the seventh to win 3-0 over Red West. Pluff got the win and went six, fanned seven and only gave up three hits. Shawn Moti picked up the save. Scott Morris and Troy Gustafson had two hits each for the utmost holy.
Lakeville scheduled three games this week and pulled off the sweep. They beat Eden Prairie, Chaska Diamonds and Elko with a combined score of 33-3. In that span of three games Lakeville smacked eleven doubles and stole eleven bases. As far as early season speculations for the AAA title Lakeville is far and away the favorite after the first month of play.
