Catfish Finally Snagged

July 24, 2024

After dropping two to the Catfish earlier this year the Merchants were back on top at Helling Field on Wednesday night, 3-1.  Brandon Baumgartner picked up the win going five strong innings allowing only one run and striking out three.  Ethan Claus and Derek Zitzow picked up one inning holds and John Eckstein closed it down in the final two innings.

Alex Urlaub got things going with his first ever Merchant hit doubling in the first inning.  Bryan Erstad and Tommy Linn ripped RBI singles and that was all the Merchants needed.  They did tack on a passed ball run in the sixth inning for some insurance.

Urlaub was the Merchant Big Hat Player of the Game setting the tone at the top of the order, stole a base, and made a half dozen plays at 2nd base.

The Merchants rose above .500 with the win, sitting at 5-4 now.  There are only two games left in Fargo League action and then the State Tournament in Jamestown.  Next up is the Mayville Redcaps next Wednesday at Helling Field, 7:00 start time.
