RESPECT, PRIDE & EMPATHY FOR WHAT IS RIGHT!!!

June 5th, 2020
While our societal tempest continues to freshen, it has created opportunities for reflection and growth. The swirls of fact & opinion have generated discussion & protest encompassing all age race, gender. The year 2020 so far has opened (& Challenged) our eyes, ears, lungs & hearts.

While our program has been associated with basketball/athletic development, a true goal has always been to create an atmosphere for well rounded maturation. For nearly 2 decades we've endeavored to share principles that help shape success on & off the court. More than ever, we find these standards to be essential!

A renowned basketball figure/coach Jim Valvano gave an emotional acceptance speech during his waning days battling cancer. A courage & humanitarian award he received at the first ESPY's in 1993. In this speech he referenced three things humans should do everyday: Laugh, Think & Cry. He called that a full day, a heck of a day & if done seven days a week, "You're going to have something special". His vibrant demeanor epitomized a figure of more than a Coach. It seemed his most valuable weapon, "His Mind" never succumbed to the failings of his body.

Lately numerous sporting/cultural figures have challenged "Our Minds". Is it possible there is a congruence between cultural change & individual athletic improvement?

From an athletic perspective, modern norms allude fans/athletes seeking the highlight & quick fix. How quickly can I get there, to that level, to that place? Is athletic development done incrementally built year upon year after routine & practice have been established? Can this be done sometimes without being for all to see? Is possible that our "Cultural Changes" are in development, to be seen brightly in due time? Do both take quality input, dedication, desire?

Our program standard for our young people will continue to prioritize developing transferable habits in interpersonal & basketball skills, hard word, dreaming and enjoyment. Taking time to nurture while respecting personal relationships that are essential to Growth

Decent people are hurting/"Crying". We are all spending time in "Thought". Many of us yearn to find "Laughter" again. Slow, DeterminedOptimistic and as Coach Valvano's most famous quote begs, "Don't Give Up, Don't Ever Give Up"!!

Hang in There,
