SIBBITT'S HOT SHOOTING HAND HELPS PAOLI WIN WASHINGTON REGIONAL DEFEATING BARR-REEVE 54-47

Paoli's Joe Sibbitt scored 22 points and put on a shooting show that vaulted the Rams into a 3rd consecutive Semi-State appearence and into position to knock Barr-Reeve out of contention by a 54-47 final score Sibbitt knew the game was on the line after fellow all-stater Scott Combs was battling injuries substained in the first game victory over Corydon and if he didn't step up he may not see his next start Sibbitt took matters into his own hands in the second half with a coast-to-coast drive after Barr-Reeve star Jon-Jon Knepp's missed 3-pointer the basket gave Paoli a 29-25 4 point lead Sibbitt hit the 1st of 5 straight 3 pointers at 3:15 in the 3rd quarter his bomb from the right corner put Paoli up 34-31 then he dribbled back and forth at the key before stripping the net for another trey and a 37-36 lead a last 3rd quarter 3 pointer put Paoli up 40-39 in between 3 pointers Sibbitt was dribbling between Viking defenders and drawing fouls money in the bank for Sibbitt it didn't take long for Ol' #10 to crank it up in the 4th quarter to continue the barrage he put the Rams back up 43-41 at 7:20 and 46-43 at 6:00 he scored his 17th straight Paoli point from 12 feet out on the left side giving the Rams a 48-43 lead with 4:53 left in the game seconds later he stole the ball dribbled left then right hand to hand and pulled up with a 3-pointer to push the lead to 51-43 and to stagger the Vikings even steady Joe Sibbitt showed emotion at that point with his fist pumping in the air when Barr-Reeve coach Bryan Hughes called timeout to stop the bleeding Paoli Coach Mike Brown and his Rams know what to do when Sibbitt gets in the "Zone" "Joe Sibbitt wasn't going to lose this game" commented Brown "When he's that hot we don't even talk too him in timeouts we just sit him at the end of the bench and talk to the other 4 and leave him alone, it's like a field goal kicker who's on you just leave them alone and let them do their job but he wasn't going to be denied tonight in the big games we've had over the years he's stepped up and done it" Barr-Reeve did not back down though behind 9 points from Knepp (who finished with 16 for the game) held even with The Rams and they were tied 25-25 at halftime Sibbitt only had 3 points at halftime but Kelly Tuell, Joe Babcock, and an injured Scott Combs had 6 apiece to keep the Rams in it Combs who finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds was hurting from an injury in the afternoon game against Corydon when he hit face first on the floor and suffered broken teeth "I think the injury played a little head game with me" admitted Combs "But you have to play through those kinds of situations I want to do the best out there for us" Tuell didn't score in the second half but stepped up his defensive effort against Knepp as he held Knepp scoreless in the 4th Quarter with The Rams holding a 53-43 lead following a Combs basket (off of a beautiful pass from Sibbitt) Barr-Reeve put up a 3-point barrage of their own however tired legs dictated short shots and the Vikings missed 10 3-pointers in a row Joe Babcock scored Paoli's last 2 points on free throws at the 1:26 mark after he fell to the floor with leg cramps after getting bumped that gave Paoli a 55-47 lead Barr-Reeve closed the scoring with a basket on it's last possession to finish the season 17-8 as for Paoli Babcock finished with 8 points Tuell with 6 points and King with 4 points to compliment Combs and Sibbitt Paoli 24-3 who will advance to take on New Albany The #3 ranked team in the state and #18 ranked team in the Nation at the Terre Haute Semi-State.

****PAOLI WINS P.L.A.C CONFERENCE TITLE IN A 81-52 DOMINATE VICTORY OVER PERRY CENTRAL ON SENIOR NIGHT****

There was somethin on the line for the 9th ranked Paoli Rams last friday against Perry Central the P.L.A.C Championship was at stake and it was Senior Night at Chambers Gymnasium the Senior-laden Rams went on a 27-5 3rd Quarter run on it's way to a dominant 82-57 victory Paoli's Scott Combs scored 26 points and pulled down 16 rebounds while Joe Sibbitt scored 21 in the Seniors last regular season home game inside Chambers Gymnasium the inside outside tandem led the Rams to a 54% Field Goal shooting Paoli also held a 43-30 rebounding edge over Perry Central Paoli started out the gates quickly in the 1st Quarter with 3 Scott Combs baskets and a quick pass from the top of the key from Kelly Tuell to Joe Sibbitt for a 3-point play that produced a 9-2 Ram lead that would expand to 18-7 when Junior Center Gabe King put in a rebound basket 2 minutes later the advantage went to 13 in the 2nd quarter when Perry Central Guard Jared Mullis started bombing 3-pointers and cut into the lead Combs had a baseline jumper while being sandwiched by 3 players to give Paoli a 34-27 lead at halftime defensive pressure was raised a notch and Tuell and fellow Senior Joe Babcock seared the nets the Senior duo counted for 14 of Paoli's 16 3rd Quarter points as the lead blossomed to a 50-34 lead when Combs and Sibbitt got in on the scoring barrage and Senior Jason McCracken benefited from a nice Joe Sibbitt assist to make it 59-34 at the end of the 3rd Quarter "This team is so talented but you have to realize tht there are only 2 players Combs and Sibbitt who are going to play Division 1 Basketball" commented Perry Central coach Dave Reese "The kid who broke the game for us was Kelly Tuell he did a great job against us" remarked Coach Reese The defensive pressure never let up from The Rams A Sibbitt pull up 3-pointer and a pull up jumper by Combs gave Paoli it's biggest lead at 75-43 Combs Sibbitt and the rest of the Seniors were given standing ovations bit none was louder than for Senior reserve Frankie Warren who hustled all night and he scored a basket in the final minutes

Rams Scoring: Scott Combs 25 points, Joe Sibbitt 21 points, Kelly Tuell 9 points, Joe Babcock 9 points, Gabe King 6 points, Jason McCracken 5 points, Frankie Warren 2 points, Dean Lynd 2 points, Danny Mudd 2 points

****PAOLI RAMS WIN 4TH CONSECUTIVE SECTIONAL BLOW OUT MITCHELL 74-50****
Paoli played it's game of runs again this time by nailing down it's spot in history by running Mitchell into a hole and The Rams into a Sectional Thrown for a 4th Consecutive Year only this time it wasn't like the other 3 it was the last time for the 8 Ram seniors to play out the script on their home floor with the title on the line and an unlikely 21-3 Paoli team taking on a 3-18 Mitchell team Paoli took the best to the youthful Bluejackets and defeated them 74-50 in methodical fashion "Once we got them tired and got our break goin then it was our game" said Paoli Coach Mike Brown however this Mitchell club unlike itself earlier in the season was coming off an emotional victory over West Washington in the Semi-Finals and had the confidence Paoli led 33-19 at halftime and stretched the lead out more with a 52-33 advantage heading into the 4th quarter The Rams went by numbers again as if they were copying their own stat sheet Paoli outebounded Mitchell 35-21 Scott Combs led The Rams with scoring 26 points and pulling down 10 rebounds Joe Sibbitt scored 20 it was a typical Paoli game right down to the slow start "We don't start well unless we hit a couple of baskets early and get to press early and get our feet moving" said Brown jump starting the Paoli offense in the 1st quarter was Senior Joe Babcock whose 3-pointer brought Paoli within 8-7 at the early stages of the 1st quarter with just later inthe 1st Quarter with just over a minute left Sibbitt hit a pull up jumper Combs then grabbed an offensive rebound and spun for 2 points and Sibbitt hit Combs on an inbound play for a 13-10 lead at the end of the 1st quarter Combs patrolled the glass in the 2nd quarter and scored on numerous putbacks he also found a seam in the Mitchell Zone defense expoliting it for drives, pull up jumpers and lay-ins his efforts helped push the lead to 27-15 at the 2:25 mark and a 33-19 lead at halftime "Down low our guys played hard against Scott Combs" commented Mitchell Coach Gary Sims "He got away from us a few times but hey he's goin to Missouri" stated Sims Paoli Senior Kelly Tuell came up with another Sectional Defensive Gem of a game allowing Mitchell's Brad Brown to only score 9 points Combs would seal the victory late in the game when he stole the ball at the opposite free throw line raced and dribbled the ball 3/4's court for a monsterous 2 handed breakaway dunk late in the 4th quarter Paoli 22-3 head into the Washington Regional rabked #7 in the state

****#3 RANKED NEW ALBANY DOMINATES PAOLI IN A 55-38 SEMI-STATE WIN****

Six offensive rebounds tell the stoey that's how many times New Albany's shooting guard LaMont Roland grabbed a teammates miss in the 1st half of the Bulldogs 55-38 thrashing of Paoli in the second game of the Terre Haute Semi-State at Indiana State's Hulman Center too much New Albany talent and quickness proved to be the killer that offset Paoli's great individual performance by Scott Combs "The guy that hurt us was Roland and he's their shooting guard" said Paoli coach Mike Brown "Our shooting guard could not block him out that was the matchup we were really worried about Scott had a hard time blocking them all out Jason McCracken is a strong kid but couldn't find people alot of times it was over before they even found anybody that's how quick they got off the floor." The slender 6'2" Roland came into the Semi-State averaging 5.5 rebounds a game but ended his game with the Rams with 12 rebounds and 16 points even when Paoli did find New Albany players to put a body on The Bulldogs they would tip the ball back in or keep the ball alive "Alot of times today we had them blocked out and they still got the rebound and scored" remarked Brown with Roland and and his teammates grabbing every stray shot for a putback and The New Albany defense suffocating any Paoli ball movement New Albany raced out to a 12-2 lead at the end of the 1st Quarter Paoli was behind 21-4 with 5:04 left in the 2nd Quarter after New Albany jumped out quickly to a 5-0 lead Paoli's Scott Combs who finished his high school career with an impressive 22 point game fought his way and hit a driving pull up jumper over a couple of New Albany players to get the Rams on the scoreboard at the 6:12 mark of the 1st Quarter Paoli did not score until later in the 2nd Quarter when Kelly Tuell hit his only Field Goal of the day it was another 3:34 before Combs forced his way through defenders to score again on the left baseline to cut into the 17 point deficit "They are the quickest team off the floor and on the floor we've played all year" remarked Brown New Albany's defense thoroughly stifled each Paoli possession forcing 13 Paoli turnovers by halftime shutting out Paoli Star Joe Sibbitt through 2 Quarters and forcing Scott Combs to work through 2 alot of times 3 defenders on each drive to the basket "Scott really earned every point he got tonight" commented Brown Combs hit on 8 out of 16 Field Goals all of them contested by 2 or more New Albany players he was 6-7 from the free throw line and had 9 rebounds while being named to the All-Tournament Team Combs scored 6 of Paoli's last 8 points in the 2nd Quarter fighting for every point Combs had Paoli within 28-14 at halftime Combs led The Rams in a charge to get them back into the game to start the 3rd Quarter Sibbitt drove the lane then hit Combs for a wide open jumper then Combs grabbed A strong Offensive Rebound between 3 New Albany defenders off of a Sibbitt missed shot while getting fouled hard as he made the rebound basket he made the free throw cut the lead to 11 at 30-19 The Paoli press caused a turnover but New Albany's Mr. Basketball candidate LaDrell Whitehead recovered and stripped Combs of the ball in mid as he was goin up for a wide open layup Whitehead then went coast to coast for a fast break layup the other way to put the lead back up to 13 Sibbitt finally broke into the scoring column with 3:49 left in the 3rd Quarter on a beautiful drive off of a crossover dribble to get the lead back down to 11 at 32-21 on the next posdsession Sibbitt would launch an NBA range 3-pointer while being tightly guarded by 2 New Albany players his 3-pointer bounced up off the rim and out of bounds Paoli would turn the ball over again but Combs would steal the ball at the free throw lane and head upcourt with the dribble he was bumped into at halfcourt then again right after halfcourt both times no foul was called but instead Combs was called for traveling Paoli did outscore New Albany in the 4th Quarter 17-13 Sibbitt was stymied both as a shooter and an assist man he was shut out from 3-point range and was 3-18 on all Field Goal attempts and never got to the free throw line under intense defensive pressure he finished with 6 hard earned points Chris Archer, Frankie Warren and Dean Lynd all had 2 points and Kelly Tuell tossed in 4 Dean Lynd was a bright spot for Paoli coming off of the bench to pull down 8 rebounds 6 of those came in the 1st half "Today Dean answered the challenge the key for him grabbing those rebounds is that he's quick" remarked Brown.

****RAMS GET REVENGE ON PANTHERS DEFEAT CORYDON 45-38 IN REGIONAL****

Appropriately the rematch between 7th ranked Paoli and 9th ranked Corydon in Saturday's Regional Game took place at the Hatchet House Paoli's Scott Combs had 3 broken teeth and a black eye Joe Babcock was bleeding from the mouth and Joe Sibbitt's arms looked like he had been in a fight with a panther but ot was the Rams who won the battle 45-38 and the right to play in the Regional Championship game for the 4th consecutive year "It was a war without any doubt" stated Paoli coach Mike Brown "It was called so loosely by the refs abd when you have loosely called games with big kids and good athletes who are smart and know they can get away with a push here and shove there without a call then it's going to be a tough game." Unlike the first game between the rams and Panthers won by Corydon January 28th Paoli was able to establish a lead behind 14-11 after the 1st quarter The Rams played nearly errorless free ball in the 2nd quarter and outscored the Panthers 19-7 to take a 30-21 lead at halftime Combs hit a rebound basket to break a 17-17 tie with 5:03 to go in the 1st half to begin the Ram charge Kelly Tuell who had 11 points for the game hit a 3-pointer then followed that up on the next possession with a reverse layup Joe Sibbitt who put up 12 points over the 32 minutes hit from the baseline for a 26-19 advantage 2 offensive rebounds and a basket by Scott Combs made it 28-19 2 free throws by Corydon's Josh Cantrell Corydon's lone sub for the game made it 28-21 but Sibbitt countered with a pull up mid range jumper after dribbling around the Corydon defense Tuell had the defensive assignment on Corydon's leading scorer Jake Biddle who came in averaging 18 points a game but Tuell held Biddle to only 1 of 7 shooting for the whole game Corydon shot 5 for 25 from behind the 3-point line for the game Paoli held it's 9 point lead in the 3rd Quarter Kelly Tuell hit Joe Babcock underneath with a nice pass for a nice basket and a 37-28 lead with 3:30 to go in the quarter both teams went scoreless the rest of the quarter nursing a 9 point lead in the 4th Paoli went to their delay game the delay put water on the Paoli fire and the Rams did not score until 1:38 remained in the game and Corydon had pared the lead to 37-35 Corydon had the ball on numerous occassions behind 37-35 but stellar Paoli defense didn't allow Corydon the change to tie or take the lead Tuell finally broke the ice cap with 2 free throws late in the game followed up by 2 from Joe Babcock who finished with 4 for the game as the game wound down Corydon kept missing from the 3-point line and Paoli kept making from the free throw line Sibbitt finalized the score with 2 free throws in the remaining seconds Paoli finished with making 11 of 14 free throws for the game compared to 3 out of 6 for Corydon The Most talked about play and probably most remembered play of this game was in the second half when Paoli's Scott Combs was going up for a wide open layup basket and a Corydon player came across the court and intentionally fouled him in mid air causing Combs to crash down hard head first to the floor breaking 3 teeth and giving Combs a black eye the play also resulted in scratches on Combs'face. when Combs did re enter the game he played like a man possessed grabbing nearly every rebound.
