Travel Basketball Information & Tryout Dates

• All tryouts will be held at Dorseyville Middle School

• Click on registration tab to pre-register for Travel Tryouts

Other Important Notes:

• Parents will not be permitted to stay in the gym or hallway during the tryouts. 
• Please plan to sign child in, leave, and pick up 
• Players should bring their own ball (extras will be available, if needed)
• Players should bring their own water bottle
• Players are encouraged to attend both tryout sessions, if available, but it is not a requirement
• If anyone is interested in coaching a team please let me know via email.

·  What is travel basketball?

Travel basketball is for the more serious basketball players who wish to play a more competitive brand of basketball. Players who make the team will be taught the fundamentals of the game, sportsmanship and team camaraderie.  As this is a more competitive brand of basketball, playing time for some may be limited and solely at the discretion of the coach.

·  Who is it for?

          We will have boys and girls teams at the following age groups 3rd, 4^th, 5^th, and 6^th. 

          We will have a max of 2 teams per grade but only if the teams can be competitive and gym time is available.

          Players are expected to play with their age group/grade ("Playing up" is only allowed under exceptional circumstances defined by Travel Coordinator and Age Group Coaches)

·  When does the season start and end?

Typically November 1st through mid-March

Tryouts start in mid-October

Practices start in November

Regular season games start in December and run through the end of February.

If teams choose to enter end of season tournaments you could play until the end of March

·  When do the travel teams play?

Home games are typically played during the week. Away game days and times are determined by the host teams and could be weekdays or weekends.

·  Where will games be played?

Home game will be played at Dorseyville Middle School, away games will be played at locations all over the Pittsburgh area. Teams may also enter mid season and year end tournaments. 

·  When do the teams practice?

There could be multiple practices during the week before the season and at least one practice a week during the season to be held on either a weekday or Sunday afternoon at the high school.

·  Is there a cost?

Travel basketball is both a time and financial commitment. The cost is generally between $250 and $300 per player.  Players will need to pay for uniforms, the leagues and tournaments they enter, gym time, clinics and insurance. If there are hardships, arrangements will be made for those players as we want everyone who wants to play to have a chance to play.  

·  How do the kids make a team?

2 open tryouts will be held for boys and girls at each grade level. Players who wish to participate should try and make both tryouts.  The kids will be run through a series of drills to determine both their basketball and athletic abilities.  

·  How are the teams determined?

A group of individuals will rate each kid in various areas to determine who makes the teams. Teams will be made up of a max of 10 players and will be announced by Wednesday, October 30th.

·  Who can tryout?

Kids that attend or plan on attending Fox Chapel or Shady Side High Schools are eligible to try-out.
